Whites V3i versus Minelab Equinox Brick Road

Ойын-сауық

Found a new permission during filming on an after work evening hunt. Decided to take both the MInelab Equinox and the White's Electronics V3i out to see how they compare on responding to targets. I set the machines up in comparable setups even though some tweaking to higher setting on the Minelab could have been achieved. Just remember that this video isn't to boost or lower opinions of any machine, I respect both although they are tools and each have strong points. I don't sell metal detectors, I'm not affiliated with either manufacturer, don't care about being associated with said or even want sponsors... I just want to find what I'm after when metal detecting... plain and simple.. so I want to use the tools that help me achieve that.
Yes, Gary said it was ok to use his voice in the audio upon leaving the site, the use of his voice was for educational purposes in helping you, the detectorist, experience asking for permission. Asking and gaining permission is the hardest part of this hobby and anything to assist that I feel may help your hunt out... I will help provide.

Perhaps if you would have used the advanced analysis programs in your V3i instead of just looking at the VDI numbers you would have much better understanding of the targets the Whites machine was seeing. Your choice to not use these features on a machine that’s was designed for them to be used left the V3i at a disadvantage over the Nox. For most users they will find more immediate results with thé Minelab machine to start because it’s much simpler and user friendly out of the box. But as experience comes the user who takes time to learn their machines and understand its capabilities will discover the superior abilities of the V3i and in the longer term most likely have better search results. I own both machines and I tend to lean slightly towards the Nox, but that’s only because I sometimes get lazy in the field and I can get away with that more often with the 800. But my best finds have consistently appeared under the coil of my V3i. Each one has its place and both are top level detectors worthy of the most discriminating owner, if you choose either one you will not be disappointed.

This is a old video and comment but man I still miss my v3i to this day, would have never sold it if I wasn't in a accident with a bad back now and the weight of the v3i was just a bit to heavy for me

As a long time V3i owner (since 2011) I was stunned, shocked, to see it completely miss targets that were easily found by the Minelab. It makes me rethink my entire life. (Okay, maybe not THAT dramatic). Seriously, your demonstration was very eye opening, and you conducted your tests out in the field under real world conditions. Thank you for sharing your findings with us, and for sharing this video. Very nicely done.

Thank you very much and glad you like what I’m doing. I try to include all so it’s like we are all there. I want full exposure in the videos so educating and entertaining can be achieved. I’m not a pro at detecting and even to define someone that thinks they are a pro at detecting is impossible. I’m just a regular joe that’s learning with every time I hunt and with what I learn I hope to better my success on the next hunt. I hope that all the regular joes can learn from my mistakes as well as good educated guesses on things that work out for the better. Hopefully that made sense. Lol.

Your welcome... I figured it would help some folks out for when they are asking permission. Asking is the worst part of it all. LOL I can pull in a drive confident but as soon as I knock on the door I fall apart. LOL Yes, the ground cloth I use in yards, makes things much cleaner and also it's useful to slide the pile of dirt around if your pile is over a non dug target (pinpointing the pile and only picking the non dug one up, just slide over and good to go). I make the ground cloth out of unused material I have at the house. Thanks for checking out the video and take care.

The permissions are always tough for some reason going up and asking... thought it would be cool to put them in my videos from now on to build confidence in folks on here. I’m totally loving the Equinox so far... I need to slow my pace and get my RD down to like 2-3 ish and go deep. The machine is deep at 4-5 so I could only image what will happen after some practice moving slow. Well... slower.. which is still fast compared to what I’ve had to do. Another comparison between the machine’s. Lol. Thanks for watching and keep at it... you need to make videos so Ihave someone to watch. 👍🏻

Everybody that lives around me uses a equinox 800. I can tell you from experience, if you got a 800 and you missed something, its totally the users error. 800's are going to be consistent every time and they all perform the exact same going against each other. The v3i is a very inconsistent machine. The processor inside of it is outdated and slow. You have to remember that the v3i is already over a decade old. And its not even close to being as technologically advanced as the 800. Its like comparing apples to oranges. 2 v3i's going against each other will always be inconsistent. A v3i going against an 800 will lose every time no matter what.

  • @davehorlacher

A V3i vs a V3i should produce similar results with the same settings, but the issue how close are they in those results a little off, or way off. One day the V3i will show junk iron on a silver coin but a few days later show a good signal with the same settings And does it really depend on the factory assemblers calibration skills? I am now running a 800 (still learning it) and hunted last weekend with a guy using a XP Deus checking each others signals and was impressed they both were consistent of what was in the ground. Now if only Minelab would put a pinpoint trigger on the 800, I sure miss that! (gives me an idea).

That actually is a good idea. There is a huge fluctuation between every unit. I had two V3i’s, one was a real piece of ____, the onther is the one I still use. I’ve had multiple D2 coils and finally found one that actually works decently. I have noticed large difference in how I can run the V3i in the morning versus the evening at the same site. Kinda crazy. Having two V’s or 800’s to tag the same targets to see how they do would be a good check on the actually repeatability of the manufactured machines. Thanks for checking out the video and for commenting.

Thanks for the comparison. You had some great finds on this hunt! I think you made a good choice on your new machine. While I like my V3i and its unique features, it's showing its age since it's been out now for nearly a decade and there are newer machines available for half to two thirds the price, and weight, that are just as good and better in many ways and they are much more versatile. Waterproof, noise canceling, updateable over the internet (huge benefit), intuitive design. I'm getting up in age and recently have had back, shoulder, and knee surgery. Swinging the V3i and MXT is becoming a chore. If I want to enjoy detecting in the future, I think I'll need to get a much lighter machine. And the Equinox looks like it may fit the bill well. Hope to see a few more comparison videos. HH, Craig

LOL I believe you hit the nail on the head with your thoughts... but just remember that both the machines are great tools which provide for great finds. I am seeing a difference between the two in which is hard to portray though video... but i'm trying. I see it this way... if it takes two years to read and re-read the manual, then get the advanced manual and read it twice... take off to the field and spend 1-2 years getting it figured out while messaging help boards constantly to get it right... that's a lot of work. I found that it took a lot of enjoyment out of my hobby time during that period. I will make more comparison videos in the future. Thank you for checking out the video.

You may have found this out already, checking a suspected iron target in 10kHz and seeing a wild spread in vdi suggests iron. Hunt in multi and check in 10kHz or a saved user program in 10kHz has helped me. It’s not 100% foolproof but after digging many of those iffy signals to confirm has shown its mostly reliable. Comparing the two detectors over natural signals always gets my interest. I dig way more junk with the EQX800 but it’s necessary in order to learn it.

There isn’t any Whites users that make videos and I haven’t found anyone using an equinox that can keep my attention for more than 5 mins. Only so much of the back of someone’s arm digging a hole that I can take. Lol. I really like the Garrett’s. With the way things are going on of my multi frequency machines will be going. Once one leaves... I’m going to look into getting an AT Pro or a Max... all depending on money. Maybe I can find a straight trade too, have to see. I know there are quite a few Garrett folks on here and I’d like to hunt with the same machine as them from time to time. It’s a lot of brain work from what I’ve been told. Lol. Whatever makes you happy is how I feel depends on what your detecting areas are like. There is a market page on fb that sales metal detecting supplies and such. I think it’s called metal detecting u s. I think. There is a few guys on KZread that lives in Ohio not sure what part. And in northern Kentucky. Tennessee. Even in West Virginia. I’m still new to the hobby. I guess you can say I must crawl before I can walk. Lol that’s why I went with the Garrett Ace 400. Maybe next year I will upgrade to an AT max or the AT Pro. Not sure yet. Might even go up to the AT Gold. Just never know. As you said good luck as always. I’m in south central Virginia. There is no target confirmation at time mark 7:26. Switch analysis mode to POLAR PLOT to sort out IRON; and since there's a 6" depth max for the polar plot mode, you can always go into all-metal mode (pull the trigger) to see the spectrograph results. Gold is likely blue at 22.5 kHz and silver is green at 2.5 kHz.

Around the 7:30 mark you dug a piece of rusted metal. I wouldn't have dug it based on the lines on the screen. If the 3 frequency lines are in the green it usually is a good indicator that it's a good target. Also pulling the trigger for pinpoint would have showed you which frequency it hit hardest in. Typically the green or red is a good target in the coin vdi numbers. Iron will almost always be highest in the blue which indicates iron in the higher coin vdi numbers. I have used the v3i for 10 years. Great machine and it will tell you most of the time what it is.

I set the V up to the max it could do in the EMI conditions and ran in the program designed for the most valuable targets... coins... I dialed back the Equinox to somewhat match where the V was set although I could have taken the sensitivity higher on the 800. From what I'm seeing so far.. the two machines are equal in performance at the 4-5" deep mark with the exception of separation between targets (utilizing comparable coil sizes). I'll keep running the two machines side by side in the future for more comparisons... one really does no justice. Especially "in town".. I'm not much of an "in town" hunter.

Great Video! The color bars during pinpointing can tell you a lot about the target.on the V3i assuming your ground tracking is accurate. You never mentioned this or referred to it. Turning the coil and checking the hit at a different angle is a must. Recovery delay needs to be slowed down and the coil moved slower. I saw and heard nulling. Filter setting? All these settings on the V3i make it more confusing though, so I would still go with the Minelab. I have used the V3i from the day was released. Way back when they called it the "Vision" then the "V3" and finally the "V3i" I also have used the Minelab E-Trac, and just recently got my hands on the Equinox, but I am still ignorant on its use as of yet. The Minilabs do handle the EMI better. I really enjoyed your video and comparisons. Thank you!

Thank you.. tried out something a little different with the door knocking so folks can experience how I do it. Hope the comparison video wasn't too boring. I will do a couple comparison videos and then be back to full time hunting and discovering. Thanks for checking out the video.

I’ve owned a V3i, and wasn’t impressed by it in any way... I currently own an Etrac and a Simplex, the Etrac is hands down my best machine! I love Minelab.

@R Hebner The CTX is by far the better of the 4 I have the v3i a friend has the ctx and another friend has the equinox all 3 are better than the at pro that I also own but only use if ime going to be hunting water the ctx probably isnt any better on vdi readings but has better depth and when hunting old sites that your digging every thing getting a signal vs not getting a signal can be the difference of a nice find or not

I have a white v3i and the stock coil is garbage. The aftermarket coils make it a whole new beast.

Hello, new to your channel and I have a few comments to this video and your past videos. In regards to this video if you are going to "cold call" on a land owner I would suggest that you have business cards made to present to the land owner, that way the land owner can relate to your face and an address and phone number ! In one of your past videos you mentioned the lowly brick. Bricks are excellent time capsules in regards to dating a possible historic site. Finally forks and spoons, back in the 19th and 18th century one must consider the food that the common people had to eat which consisted of stews, soup and gruel and a fork was not that common. I have hunted MANY old home sites and Civil War sites and the ratio of excavated spoons to forks is 10 to 1 in favor of the spoons and VERY few butter knifes . Your videos are great and honest !

Hello Peter and welcome to my channel, glad you joined in. In the past I used to have business cards that were related to my hobby of metal detecting although I use my business cards for my land surveying company instead now. Being that it's my official business and I order like 1000 of them every year I can just keep it to one type of card to keep on me... I can also write the cost off but don't tell the feds... even though it could flourish into surveying services. I hadn't though about the spoons in that regard but you are spot on... great point make and bring to light for me... greatly appreciated. Thank you again for checking out what I am doing on here and for your kind comments. Since you are new and I try to keep up with everyone on here although it's getting harder as the group count rises... what machine are you running currently? I just like to know so when I reply to you I can relate on that basis due to multiple machine being on this channel.

@@squarenailsquirrel9638 Hello My Friend, and thank you for your response ! I currently have a Garrett ATP , a nice machine and not overly complicated . I have used many detectors over the decades and yes I am in my sixties. I was a certified Fisher metal detector dealer when I lived out at Gettysburg . I am now living back in Western Pennsylvania .

Takes time... I wanted this 800 for a long time. I had to buy tires for my truck which set me back to start all over just before buying the machine 5 months ago. I saved aggressively cutting out all my lunches I buy out, putting 30.00 back each paycheck and other routes of cutting spending other areas to get the money saved. Hopefully you can get there and buy another machine although the ones you are using currently are good ones and if you know how to run them well and are successful... that’s all that matters.

both great units ( V3I owner with many fellow detectorists with EQ800's) we all find great stuff but have to say V3i has the control over the EQ800 but if you dont walk over it and its not there you wont find it :)

You're videos are the best! Love how you compared both machines on same objects, unknown. Any particular reasons you would pick one machine over the other? I run AT Pro and love it. The Equinox seems to pick out objects more precise, would you agree with your testing? I know you also haven't had a ton of time with the Nox, but seems to have found some good stuff for you. Thanks

Thank you very much and I appreciated it. So far... i'm leaning towards the Equinox but only through more comparisons will I find out which machine I will be primarily using. If the Equinox proves to be the best choice.. I will sell the V for more coils to use with the minelab. I don't have a ton of funds so I always get what I can back from "hobby" stuff and put it back into "hobby" stuff. If I choose the Equinox I will wait for something from White's that's comparable. I called them twice, asked their field team members, etc. and I only got lame answers about the research and development teams working on a new machine... that's their job so I hope they are. LOL I was willing to wait for the competitor from whites in this world of lightning fast processors and separation. The AT Pro is a great machine from what I know, half of America uses one for a reason. :) I haven't used one so I can't comment from experience. I do feel like I could pick up a Garrett and use one though because I have watched every video by Aquachigger and Green Mountain Metal Detecting... many hours of Garrett tones and digs. LOL Thanks for checking out the video and take care.
