Cornwall, North Devon and West Somerset are England's most deprived areas. Mainly white working class. Lowest employment. Lowest social mobility. Fewest in Higher Education. Least School spending per head. Highest house price relative to incomes in many parts. Least access to transport. Least access to sports centres.

@@dangerousfables Talented sports people in Cornwall often have a three hour round trip to their training facilities . In South London they are usually within walking distance. Typical house price in parts of Cornwall is 20 times income. In London 11 times. Many in the Westcountry live over half an hour from a hospital. In London it is four minutes. This impacts live expectancy.

@@stephfoxwell4620 Yes. Things are further away from each other in the countryside than the city. Not much can be done about that I’m afraid. Also the median house price in Cornwall is only 9.6 x average wage, not sure where you got the frankly ludicrous 20x figure from.

The building industry in London has been destroyed for the youth of this country by mass immigration. The wages have definitely been stagnant for 20 years, and you won't find the English majority on any site. We have been pushed out. The training which used to be standard with apprenticeships etc has vanished. along with the skilled tradesman and quality of work.

@kevingrant7098 De Nile isnt just a river in egypt, is it? Fact is you haven't paid anything like the real cost for buildings in terms of labour for decades, as the industry was addicted to cheaper overseas labour who would tug their forelock and be grateful for minimum wage. this has started to be rectified since leaving the EU and suprise the suprise, the howls of rage as the choronic under investment in skill becomes apparent, and contractors are actually starting to get paid their worth now. Get used to it, no going back, building work is hard labour that should be well paid.

The 11+ was the factor that enabled people to use their intelligence to get on. With the advent of comprehensives sadly, standards have dropped. People said the 11+ favoured the wealthy. Rubbish. It favoured the intelligent. Many of those of us who went through that system came from poor working class backgrounds. Living proof that the 11+ worked. My husband failed the 11+ but actually went on to have a successful career as an engineer - because he had an education tailored to suit his needs - dyslexic and apprenticeship.

You are right. My grandparents were working class, had enough to eat but had to be otherwise very careful with money. My father, through the work ethic fostered by my grandparents and the 11+, was able to raise a family on a middle class income. Edit your point about apprenticeships is cogent too. There is far too much focus now on degrees that are not always the best way to learn.

In the 60s and 70s there was a problem with girls under performing in school. To correct this, the syllabus was gradually changed from test based marking (which on average boys were found to be better at) to include more project based assessment (which on average girls were found to be better at). These changes reversed the trend resulting in boys under achieving, however there was no pressure to correct this, possibly because pressure groups in UK society are largely gynocentric. In the same way white people apparently can't be victims of racism, boys and men can't be the victims of sexism. Not really surprising considering the government select committee which oversees the Government Equalities Office is called the "Women and Equalities Committee".🤨

No it's because most migrants that come to Britain have a sink or swim attitude. They know that working hard in Britain and making maximum use of the opportunities available is a matter of survival. I'm Indian but born and brought up in Britain. My folks came to Britain in the 1970's from India with f**k all in their suitcase and leaving behind a country ravaged with the after effects of British colonialism. Despite both of my parents being University educated in India, they worked hard in factories to begin with, saved up enough money and started their own business. The money that they earned from their business put me and my sibling through school and university. Growing up, my parents went without luxuries like a nice car, nice clothes, going down to the pub or holidays to anywhere except India just to make sure that they had enough money to send both me and my sibling to good schools. So it's a matter of culture and priorities. If your priority is to work hard, keep your family together without getting divorced, and make maximum use of the opportunities available to better yourself, and that also includes making best use of the education systems available in Britain, then you stand a good chance of climbing that social mobility ladder.

The same can be said of black youth and their hopeless parents. I taught for 30 years in inner London and the attitude to education among young black males and many of their parents also was appalling. Yet they get special funding and privileges to access university; white working class kids don't. So take your anti white bigotry elsewhere mate

That's a very generalising statement. I'm glad you knew every white working class boy in your school, including their work ethic etc.

still waiting for you to tell us all how you know about the motivations, aspirations and ambitions of every boy at the school you went to, how did you know what all of them were thinking, how do you know all the parents had low expectations ? only an entitled white middle class female marxist would make a comment as snobbish, blinkered and absurd as the one you have made.

Don’t buy this crap. It’s to do with education and how education is valued by the average white working-class Brit. Answer: often, not that much. This is a national cultural thing, as I have lived/worked all over the world, and the equivalent working-class individuals in other countries have total and utter respect for education as a way out and a way forward, that is just not the case here.

Thank you 👏Atleast someone get's it! I'm Indian (born and brought up in Britain) and Indian people love education 🙂. In fact Indian parents compete with each other on their kids grades to see whose kids can get the highest marks! This sort of culture doesn't exist with white people in Britain, certainly not the white working class. That being said, there are growing numbers of white British men marrying Indian women in Britain and overwhelmingly I'm seeing their kids are being brought up to hold the same reverence for education that full Indian people have.
