Great video! One detail note: the west colonnade had not been entirely demolished when the greenhouses were built. When Theodore Roosevelt had the greenhouses removed, much of the original Jefferson-era west colonnade reappeared, and served as a model for the reconstruction of the colonnades on both sides. Thanks for such a great job!

The White House is always a thrill to visit. I’ve had the privilege of visiting it 8 times. When you stand on Pennsylvania Ave facing the mansion, it seems like a vast home, but I’ve found if you stand in the center of the cross hall, look from side to side, you can see the exterior walls East to West. It makes it seem like a much more intimate space. Either way, the “people’s house” is a home all Americans should be proud of. The one time of year I’ve always wanted to visit is the week between Christmas and New Years. It is the only time the house is open in the evening to the general public, it sparkles beautifully with all the Christmas decorations, and all the candles are lit. If anyone is vacationing in Washington, it’s well worth the stop, but it’s better to plan ahead for a congressional tour arranged through your congressman. Once when on a vacation with my inlaws, my mother in law told me while she was sitting at the dressing table in her room getting ready for dinner, she looked in the mirror and thought “I went to the White House today!” For first timers, it’s a surreal moment.

I’ve been in a bunch of those rooms, including the Oval Office, basement kitchens, theater, west wind, First Ladies reception room and diplomatic reception room as well as all the first floor rooms. Two private tours, one during Clinton, and one during Obama. I have a picture with Buddy, Clinton’s dog. And we saw Obama leave in marine one. I hope they had it deep cleaned after the four years of orange filth was booted out.
