Whistler but on 300mm of Suspension

Спорт

I finally took out the 300mm Boostmonster huck bike to The Whistler Bike Park and tested it out on the trails! I wanted to feel what 12" of suspension feels on these high speed jumps and tech trails! Some worked better than others! I learned a few things though, I decided after the fact that I need higher air pressure in my tires and also foam inserts!
This fork felt super good on the big drops and landings! There were a few issues on some of the faster tech though, I am hoping to get it all figured out and running amazingly soon enough!

I have no "actual" knowledge of how fork compression circuits work, but my armchair assumption is that the HSC journals/holes could be enlarged to allow more flow at max HSC. In my mind you are feeling the system suddenly overwhelmed on those high speed square-hits and literally hydro-locking the suspension for a split second. Absolutely amazing project and entertaining video though as always. Thanks Jordan!

If you can see where the coil is rubbing the shock, a simple solution might be to simply rotate the coil so the rub spot sits in the gap between coils if it’s on a corner. Long springs may also compress in an arc and need to be rotated to compensate if the rub is in the middle of the shock body.

  • @timshaw3493

That bike eats those trails like it should, it is from the era that made whistler the bike park known today. Also it crossed my mind about maybe there is to much "sidesways" pressure and the shock is actually flexing a bit, tighten the spring more and use the adjustments . good luck Awesome video! cant wait for the sun peaks one!

The supermonster stanshions have an extra hole drilled in them compared to normal monsters. They were developed mostly for big drops not techy downhill trails. I understand Egor and a few others may disagree with that statement and tell you different but its true. The only other 300mm fork produced was the risse bigfoot and that was also developed for the same thing. You will always have issues trying to run a super monster if you’re going to use them for something else 😂

He might be a bit quirky, but as long as you are honest about your skill level with him, he will build a shock, or modify a shock, that's perfectly matched to your imes leverage curve, riding style, and rider weight. You could try a Procore in the rear. I'm running it in a 26" rim that's not tubeless ready with a wire bead magic mary and the inner tube helps seal it up so good I lose zero pressure over weeks of storage. I've done a few runs in rocky places with 8 psi without getting a flat. It's a double edged sword because it sucks when you do get a flat but it reduces the chance greatly.

It might be the rebound? The shock might be too compressed after those smaller, yet harsh, consistent hits, and too slow to return to droop so you're bottoming out.

I was thinking the same, slow down the compression and speed up the rebound just a bit for all the rapid hit's so it's not packing down.

I've never bottomed it out yet though, the compression is wide open too, the fork doesn't give me the chance to pack up because the rebound is too fast. But one thing I am trying now is lighter weight oil!

I wonder if the harshness on the tech comes from the long stanchions twisting and then binding. Not sure if that is faxable because it just has to do with how stiff the stanchions are and how long they are (leverage and all that) but that may be why they seem to get harsh on the chunky stuff.

Could also just be restrictive shim stacks to soak up big jumps he could re shim yo allow for more oil. Flow for the first 4-6 in of travel

wonder if the harshness is from the fork having too much oil? like it's soft off the top and then ramping up too much at the end causing not enough support in the beginning then all of a sudden slamming into a wall at harsh compressions?

right now I think it's more to do with the 10 wt oil, it's made for 7.5 wt actually!

Hey Jordan. I think the fork and front tire are both setup way too soft. I run 35 to 40 psi front...also when a fork is too soft, it dives through the travel too easily which changes the geometry radically. That steepens the headtube angle and pitches your weight forward leading to moments like the one one whistler downhill. Idk but just something to think about
