My head cannon is that Surge spared Eggman due to a sub-conscious side effect of Starline’s coding/hypnosis and the dynamo-cage putting her thoughts into overdrive. I mean it was enough to make hallucinations of Starline in front of her and near the end of the arc she really goes bonkers.

Agreed I love Adam Bryce's work. He truly knows how to capture emotion with not just the scenes and characters but panel as well. The one where Kit finds out about surge is done beautifully.

@@grimsonforce7504 I think there were actually 2 artists in this comic. The first half with Whisper being Adam Bryce Thomas, and the other being with Evan Stanley.

From what I've seen of Surge so far, she definitely seems more like a Vegeta from back in the Saiyan and Frieza sagas; loud, energetic and especially arrogant with a hint of ego.

@@deantrail6789 They need to be careful with fakeout deaths, as if they do it once, where a character confirmed dead by the comic itself (like surge falling down that hole isnt a fakeout death, so him being alive in the next issue is completely fine) is brought back, then the next character deaths will become significantly less impactful

No insult to Sonic and Tails, but Surge and Kit are becoming my favorite duo in the comics. Love those two!

It was so cool seeing not only another character using the wisp powers, but also sonic using them again too because like, yeah why wouldn't they keep using them ? They're still crazy powerful and useful. It's moments like these that really make me appreciate the comics, and how they use things that were established in the games and then dropped later.

Neat and all, but I’m still waiting for the day someone relatively normal uses the Wisp powers. I get sorta why Whisper wouldn’t use her wisps’s natural power, she finds them more effective in her Wispon, but someone one of these days deserves it, and with Lanolin being set up with a Rhythm Wisp for Urban Warfare, it’s the perfect circumstance.

14:00 I like how Sonic on this panel is showing a face of fear while keeping some of his confidence in that warped grin. Sonic is meant to be cool with attitude, but being cool doesn't necessarily mean being fearless. Even then, that grin is there to remind us that Sonic is a thrill seeker who loves adventure, and expects this sort of tight situations to occur, as they have in the past. So we're reminded of who Sonic is and what he's gone through, as well as demonstrating is okay to be scarred, just don't let it control you and just follow your gut instincts.

Given that Sonic’s used wisp powers before, imagine if Surge ended up gradually getting the different powers Sonic’s used throughout the series.

I wouldn’t mind having kit and surge as rival enemies and having them go from being kinda nuts to more reasonable and less crazy characters.

Agreed. I'd love to see them resolve their emotional and mental instability, and recover from the _damage_ Starline did to them, while still remaining antagonists and rivals. Let Surge remain determined to bring Sonic down without it being this overpowering _need_ implanted by Starline. Let Kit be devoted to Surge not because he's programmed to be and suffers a mental breakdown if something happens to her, but because he _chooses_ to help her, because they end up genuinely caring for each other, even if Surge's attitude and pride won't let her admit it. Though I suspect the mental damage won't really go away, because it's an "interesting" and unique aspect to the characters, as much as it makes me sad. Guess me and Sonic kinda have that in common. I'd rather see them get to a healthy mental state, _then_ decide to continue being problems rather than be problems because they're victims who are programmed to be problematic.

Indeed. Within a year or 2 (Assuming that the whole of Sonic Forces and the IDW comics are at least 2 years long) she has lost her original team, betrayed by one of them, lost her latest friend to a virus (essentially dead with no cure) then lost not only her remaining friends in the Wisps, but also her last keepsake of her original team in her Wispon. She really needs a win at some point.

I’ve loved this arc so much - which fits well seeing as it’s the first arc I’m reading as it’s coming out. Surge and Kit have been fascinating - I’ve especially loved the way Starline has “come back” as a great method of having him die without losing the character entirely. And my god the art. Both issues have been fantastic, but that moment of Surge breaking out of the tower is just wonderful composition - it’s been stuck in my head since the issue came out. Lots of love for the team here. And as for you, as always this was a great video - it’s always nice to get your input on things, especially as you catch a lot of things that go over my head first time around

Just gonna go right off and say it and say the reason Surge doesn't instantly fight eggman with her new power is because she just spent all of last issue, page after page panel after talking about getting back at sonic....she's petty, brash, childish, a bad planner and a egoist. I see it as characterization rather than plot armor for eggman but some people say there is not difference 😑

@@davidajayi6516 Surge was brainwashed to hate Sonic, that’s not stopping her from killing other people before she kills him. And if it was her programming stopping her from killing Sonic, we would have gotten some indication. Instead she just chose not to kill him of her own volition.

My headcanon for what the Starline Hallucination was is that it might be some kind of self-diagnostic tool Surge's cybernetic implants have, which she can now actually understand with the dynamo cage enhancing her powers, as for why it takes the form of Starline talking to her; that's simply a construction of her subconscious, who better to explain how things work to her than the man who created the tech in her own body? This explains how the Starline Hallucination knows things that she initially doesn't.

One the one hand, Surge is a troubled kid that clearly needs help. On the other hand, *_no one hurts the whisp!_*

something i like a lot about the overpowered arc is how nonstop it is and how surge keeps attacking sonic directly or indirectly, really showcasing her character as someone who is always eager and angry to fight someone, taking whispers wisps, straight up choking sonic

Of course, Whisper had to go through a lot in this Arc. But I feel that her old enemy named Mimic will return soon.

My thoughts as to why Surge didn't off Dr. Eggman at their first encounter was due to Dr. Starlines brainwashing. I believe that despite Surge being aware of her condition and despite making the plan to take them all out, Surge will always reach some kind of conclusion to make Sonic her first target. It is a subconscious obsession that will make her perform various mental gymnastics to, at the end of the day, fulfill Starline's implanted idea that she must destroy Sonic.

I don't think the Dynamo Cage is to blame for Surge's hallucinations. It is weird that Surge would have an explanation for seeing Starline right away, even if it is from the hallucination, it is still from her own mind as you said. But that makes the explanation suspect. Ridding herself of her hallucinations will take more than just ditching the device, even possibly beyond this arc.

Yeah I think what's more likely is that starline programmed her mind in some way to ensure that even if something happened to him or she ended up rebelling, he'd still be able to make sure that she went after Sonic. It's probably also why she spared eggman, from a narrative point. Her programming goes DEEP.

@@meowsquared Possibly, but I was more meaning that she is making assumptions about the hallucination. She has been through a lot of trauma, so I think it's very plausible that her hallucinations come purely from her fractured mental state. The dynamo cage is a convenient explanation to tell herself she still has control. It could be, but I don't think it is residual programming from Starline. While he tries to plan for every contingency, he is still very arrogant. He thought his hypnosis glove was infallible and therefore didn't plan past it. He didn't even consider that his arm could be grabbed and it turned on him.

Whisper vs Surge was epic ya know 🤩. Even though having her gun is like the thing about her, she's still trying to fight without her gun. That's a thing about her character. Without a gun she's like a special agent with martial arts or something 😄 I'm not going lie, but I kind of wanted Surge to win ya know😅😅 She's just so cool

The wisper and surge fight made me wish a animated series of the comics maaan seing wisper fight until the end game chills, i really love those 2 both are my favorite characters on the comics cast

Whisper vs Surge is easily my favorite fight in IDW Sonic. Adam Bryce Thomas always delivers on art that looks brilliant, always putting SO much emotion into the characters, and action that reminds me of a lot of common manga techniques.

Still get the feeling that Whisper may end up killing someone at some point as this is another moment of her willing to end someone when she gets emotional due to her friends being in danger or harmed. I like that she's more battle hardened and it'll be interesting if she ever crosses that line (assuming she hasn't already in the past). She'd either keep it a secret or eventually tell Tangle and see where that thread goes.

I do want to mention nice touch on Sonic saying they just need to tell the truth to Kit while basically "ripping a bandage off of the floor." Don't know if it was intentional, but it was fun to point out.

Honestly, I'm getting tired of having Whisper show up just to cry and get traumatized. I hope the next issues make her actually fun to read.

I hope the idw characters make it to main series games we really need them to stay what happened with Archie is unforgivable

I appreciate you commenting on that fantastic shading that the artists used to obscure Hallucination Starline's face. I am surprised that I haven't seen anybody else praise that because it is haunting and I love it. I wish they kept it up, I was so disappointed when I saw that those last few panels with him ditched the effect. Awesome Speed Reading as always, Nick. It took me a while to get to this one.

I am very happy to see her return in the next comic.

well this is good Surge is going against Whisper while Whisper trying to go another round at gunning for Eggman,Well I Hope one day when these two meet they will be forced to team up and find out each other uneasy trails of turmoils and have relationship akin to Sonic & Shadow in Adventure 2 cause i still believe Surge can be a Perfect Neutral Character some one who can be a punch clock villain when she want to mix it up with sonic and pals but will lend a hand if her and kit are in the same boat as our heroes and are also gunning against Eggman

This volume has made me like Surge a tiny bit more than I did before (she is definitely not in my list of top 10 favorite characters to be introduced in the idw comic). It’s so interesting how the more aggressive creation of Dr Starline needs kit to help her get the doctor out of her head. Also oh my gosh Whisper and Kit broke my heart. I hope that Whisper gets back at Surge. Also I really wished that Kit stayed with Sonic and Tails instead of escaping with Surge. It would have been so interesting to see Kit go against Surge. It would be like watching Tails stopping Sonic from going dark. Also it would be a great arc watching him try to overcome Surge who has been unkind to him in order to ultimately save her from herself.

Man I feel bad for surge and kit, like they were created for basically only one reason and seeing how much trauma starline has caused them like it kinda just makes me want to hug them, and like idk i think it would be kinda cool seeing them becoming good guys and switching to Sonic’s side

As iconic a scenario as it is to have heroes face off against their classic foes, it's just as engaging to see what happens when those baddies are taken out of the equation. What terrible legacy they leave behind to still cause trouble. We got that with Eggman's absence at the start of the IDW story when Metal took up the throne, and now we see similar havoc by Surge now that her creator is similarly MIA. It's just fascinating to see play out 😊

I always find these comic speed readings as such a fun treat. IDW is my favorite sonic comics out of every other publishers so far. And now with it being referenced in frontiers this could be canon. I'm excited for sonics future for once in a long time.

When I was reading these issues, 'Nowhere to Run' from Forces came on, and I think that's a pretty good song for Surge until we get anything better

If I had one problem, it would kinda be a personal minor thing. But I think it would've been better for Whisper Wispon to remain busted or unable to be repaired. It was originally a one of a kind prototype made by one of her teammates who is now dead. I think it be more interesting to go down a path of her having to use different Wispons till she gets an upgraded and improved version of her old Wispon. No longer a prototype but the completed package. It would also be a nice visual indicator that she has grown.

Wondering when the anime adaptation is coming out

A nitpick I have of recent comics is that, Sonic is always with Tails now. Something I really liked about the early issues is that Sonic was always partnered with a different character, be it Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Blaze or Tangle. Granted, part of that is because early issues were much more self contained, in contrast to the longer arcs we have now, and also there are quite a few characters that have taken the boot, like Knuckles going back to Angel Island or Silver staying in the future. I still really like the book, I just kind of prefered it when Sonic couldn't go two steps without coming across another friend, it really showed how likeable he was. Now that Tails is always with him, it's not as impactful

Surge and hallucination Starline's dynamic is a like a less funny, more emotional and serious version of Rampage and the ghost of Skeletor's dynamic in He-Man 2022. I love it so much in both.

3:05 - The dynamo cage's overall intended function aside, I can't help but wonder how exactly the darn thing was intended to be _worn_ as well. My first thought was maybe around one's neck (which would explain why Eggman would've been okay with those cables sticking out of it like that; they'd have been more flush against the body and less grab-able than they are the way Surge wears it), but the problem I run into with _that_ idea is one GA half-jokingly noted in the last issue, that the vast majority of characters _including_ Eggy himself _don't have necks,_ (and Surge is one of _very_ few with a ponytail). I know all too well it's not important in the grand scheme of things, and one could probably just write it off as "oh, it was a prototype he was messing around with, the finished product would have probably looked much different", but I still can't help but wonder about these little details... 🤔

"Overdrive Surge" sounds like either a powerful Pokemon move, or some kind of deity. I'm glad to see that what it ACTUALLY was is one of the coolest Sonic characters... ever, really.

Surge leaving instead of attacking Eggman was odd. They could have dialed back the plot armour if they'd just had Metal Sonic show up as a deterrent after he flew off last issue because of the explosion.

My god Surge's expressions and the expressions in general are so intense! This is the coolest I've seen sonic media ever since unleashed!! I love this intensity and ACTUAL seriousness in the fights, they look really cool too! Ever since the opening from sonic unleashed everything else regarding combat has just been really bland
