Whirlpool Washer - Adjusting Water Level Selector

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Originally recorded October 25, 2016.
Another great benefit of the Whirlpool Direct Drives--if your water level switch has different detent positions for load sizes (and not an infinitely-variable one), you can tweak the water level at each position.
Just pop the control panel, and on the back of the water level selector switch is a hex-head screw. On this machine it uses a 3/16" socket. Turn this VERY LITTLE at a time, I went a quarter of a turn, and that landed me exactly where I wanted it to be! Turning clockwise will increase the water level, counterclockwise will decrease the level. Make sure you push in on the screw when done to reset the switch and allow water to flow again.

    I hope you don’t mind me asking this...The stem of our water level switch broke and has been stuck on small load. The cost of a replacement switch is close to what we paid for the washer. Do you know of any way to switch the water level to large without having to replace the switch? It’s a Whirlpool wtw5540sq0 top loader. Thank you for your time

  • @jaykay18

    @jaykay18

    3 жыл бұрын

    The stem, as in the part you turn that's connected to the knob? Like the knob broke off kind of thing? If that's what you mean, and you want to force it to large, about the best suggestion I have is to get a small flat blade screwdriver, and try pushing against what's left, and maybe there will be enough friction to force it to turn. If that doesn't work, and you don't mind messing up the screwdriver, you can heat it, hot enough to melt the plastic. I don't know how hot you'd need to go, maybe a candle would work if you leave it in long enough. The idea is to get it hot enough to push the screwdriver tip into the plastic, but DON'T turn it. Let the screwdriver make its own slot, and remove it. Then when the screwdriver is cool enough, you can use that slot to turn it, one last time, to full. You have one shot at doing this right, so be careful. If you screw it up and can't turn it, you'll have to replace it. Also, stand by the washer to ensure it stops filling; if you go too deep into the switch you could damage the innards and then there's no fixing it. If you do get it to work, don't kill yourself over the excess water usage for smaller loads. Around here, I pay some of the highest water rates in the nation, at a penny a gallon, so if the washer uses 25 extra gallons of water, it's only a quarter. Good luck! Any other questions, let me know.

    Front loaders are designed to use less water. Too much water can create too many suds, which would impede washing performance. Chances are your machines does NOT have mechanical water level selector, and thus, no, you can't do that to yours. Unless of course you're handy with a soldering iron and microcontrollers and write your own programs for it.

    If you have THIS EXACT MODEL, there are two big metal clips underneath, as shown. Push them towards the back of the machine while trying to lift up on the controls panel. Left side is a little trickier because the lid switch is there also. Alternatively, you may be able to slide a putty knife in the gap between the controls panel and the machine to help push the clip back. Other models may use screws instead, sometimes on the front, sometimes on the back. Just be careful, but it's a pretty rugged piece so no chance of breaking. If your machine is newer, this may not work at all.

    @@condor5635 No, actually most don't. The general public is near retardation. I work with them. Your washer likely has the same function, washing clothes, much like cars from different manufacturers all drive, but operates completely differently from mine. My washers are completely mechanically controlled, there are no circuit boards (except for the water temperature switch to keep you from using enough hot water, but I have a workaround for that too). Yours VERY LIKELY uses an electronic control panel and not a mechanical timer which means it operates completely different. I owned a GE washer when I bought my house, the previous owners left it behind. That was from the early 2000s and even it was computer controlled. In your machine, it's quite possible they use that water level switch to prevent taking more water than necessary, but it often takes less. When there are sensors and computers and the load dances around as the machine fills, ALL BETS ARE OFF.

    @@jaykay18 - yes it is circuit board controlled. Agreed all bets are off when the dump thing turns as if fills sensing loads etc. I guess what I want to know is when set to max does it fill based completely on the pressure switch being open or closed? Does not seem to be possible since there are small and medium load sizes on the dial and the pressure switch is a binary value - on or off with 2 distinct pressure thresholds. There is no variable reading it either reached the first pressure level or not. So does time/engine load sensing come into play even when set to max? I think everything is working as designed it just appears that some times there sure is not as much water as you would think in it when set to max. Thanks

  • @jaykay18

    @jaykay18

    @@condor5635 Again, all bets are off. My best guess is it uses the load size pressure switch almost as an "overflow" switch. The smaller you set it, the smaller it pretends the tub actually is. Meanwhile, it will go on load sensing in whatever cockamamie way it does, not to exceed the maximum as set by the load size pressure switch. If it can get away with using less water, it will.

    I don't think I could do that with my digital controlled SpeedQueen - wish I could. It does fill up at least to where that whirlpool started at - which I'm still fine with. I was impatient when we bought our house, and didn't want to wait for the dealer to order a machine with the knob controls. I can't stand the laundromat with all the kids and having to sit there waiting with my thumb up my (you know). I'm still very happy with it though even though it only fills about 95% of the way unlike the front loaders and HE top loaders (Which don't even have an agitator! and have locking lids so you can't add anything after it starts! - How are they supposed to get anything clean?). I can't imagine trying to wash my queen sized comforter in one of those. But I can lift the lid or pause it for an extra long soak and also I am able to disable the switch that stops it with the lid open - which isn't really necessary but sometimes I just like to watch what it's doing. So that is nice.

    You actually might be able to, depending on how they worked it it. If they used a pressure switch similar to these machines it should be adjustable--the circuit board is just watching for a switch to open or close. They may have used a variable-adjust one that uses resistance based on the amount of water in the tub, in which case I couldn't think of a very easy solution. The other option is to add a manual fill momentary switch to the machine. You'd tap into the 120V feeding the machine, go through the momentary switch, and wire that to the fill valves. You'd just hold the button for as long as you'd like the water to flow, and I don't think the circuit board would know the difference. There are options available to you, just think about ways to solve the problem.

    I have found many videos for the knob controls, but not the digital controls. - The only brand that we could get because of the small doorways was SQ when the warranty expires I will mess with it more - but since it's still under it's warranty (which SQ is great for) I don't want to mess with it too much when I don't exactly know and void it. but the disabling the lid lock was super easy with just a clothsline pin. After the warranty is over in about 3 1/2 years from now I will try to mess with it a lot more!

    I am not planning on getting rid of this one. - SQ skirted the laws as much as they can. - I am keeping this forever and rather than replacing I will keep getting it repaired. It was the only brand that is still made that is easily dissasembable that in pieces would fit down my tiny basement staircase. That's why I had to go to a SQ official distributor because they aren't sold in places like Home Depot, Lowes, etc... It was either that or a very tiny HE front loader - which we didn't want - don't like front loaders and what's the point in having a tiny machine when I would still have to go to the laundromat to was my sheets and blankets.

    They generally don't lose calibration. This was simply done to increase the water level in the tub a little more. Just helps things out when doing a very large load. • @jaykay18

    @jaykay18

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah they don't lose calibration. Most washers of this style have NO timer on water fill, they'll happily flood your entire house. Dishwashers have a timed fill, with an overflow float sensor. The problem with a timed fill is everyone has different water pressure. If your pressure is extremely low, the dishwasher might not get enough water; too high of a water pressure will cause the float to activate. If that switch is not getting "activated" by the water in the tub, either the switch itself is faulty, or there's a problem with the hose. Generally, these systems are very reliable and can run for well over 30 years without a problem.

    @@tonyd1149 Yeah, no problem. Probably the easiest way, since your old machine had one, if you still have any paperwork anywhere with the model number for it. I'd look that up on a couple of appliance parts websites. Find one with a picture and compare to how yours mounts up. If it can mount, it can work. If you have no recollection of the old machine, look on KZread for different Whirlpool or Kenmore washers, one of them is bound to have it, and the author might have put the model number in the title or description, or spoken it aloud. Then you can look up the parts list for that and see if it fits. I can tell you that if you just do a broad search like "whirlpool water level selector switch", there will be an overwhelming number of results, and you won't be able to tell one from another.
