Whip Fishing

Спорт

Jon Arthur tackles the River Thames with a couple of 5m whips and some groundbait to demonstrate how to put a quality net of roach, perch, bleak, dace and hybrids together in double-quick time!
Venue:
Jon fished the River Thames at Culham, Oxfordshire, which is controlled by Sutton-Courtenay AC. Day tickets are available in advance from all good Oxfordshire fishing tackle shops.

    Love it! Spent most of my teenage years fishing like that - could only afford semi-decent whips and not a standard long pole, and in the busy town centre stretches of my local river fishing to hand kept valuable carbon off the towpath close behind. Used to have some cracking bags of fish, and I'm sure you still could if it wasn't full of house boats now.

    I find pre loading a light elastic helps with setting the hook, its a fine line though between bumping them on the strike, also moving your bulk /olivette closer to your hook length helps get through the water to hopefully to where the better fish are, love your work😁(content) jon as always its a real pleasure thank you. 👍

    Whip fishing was always my favourite method. I first started as a kid living in Malta. The method off the breakwaters was to use a bamboo whip with a cork float down to a plastic dropper like a coat hanger which you tied two hooks to. Very crude but effective. Amazed at the amount of fish we used to catch. I carried that on back in this country and loved it. Quite happy catching small fish all day on this method. Great video again.

    The South Yorkshire Navigation Canal here in Mexborough is 11' deep so perfect for the whip. I use 5mtrs of my 6 mtr LEEDA Merit carbon whips that I picked up locally a few years ago for £16.99 each (sadly no longer available) The flow is minimal between boats so long line to hand with flick tip is perfect using home made 1.1/2 gr pencil floats with an olivette and No. 8 and 10 Styles as droppers to 1.1/2 lbs Maxima Chameleon hook length and usually size 18 barbless PR490 hooks which are wide gape and super sharp. Best bait has been single red maggot loose fed with golf ball sized balls of groundbait fed a few yards downstream from the loose feed every couple of runs through which keeps them on the bottom. Luckily in the 6 or 7 years I've been fishing here I've never had a pike attack but have had no trouble landing decent sized bream, perch, roach, the odd tench, crucian carp and a 5lbs common carp that took me all over the place (much to the amusement and encouragement from the grass cutting crew in the graveyard on the far bank) A very under rated method.

    These specific whips have special dacron loops on the end that I lasso the rig over. Other's I have I use a double rubber method and wrap it around the tip several times, which is a bit fiddlier. My old shorter whips still have stonfo-style flick tip connectors on the end.

I use the same nets, if I use the attachment point you removed, the net droops. appreciate your time.

  • @JonArthur

    @JonArthur

    2 жыл бұрын

    I only ever use the bottom thread on the matrix nets so I hacksaw the protruding one so it doesn't catch on my landing net. I always use an adaptor that points upwards so the keepnet is closer to my feet. Look at the Matrix 3DR Cross Arms or Protector Bars for single nets, or turn the blocks upwards 90 degrees if using a keepnet bar and multiple nets. The keepnet should never sag down.

    Cheers, I think powergum comes into play when it's 6m+ whips and big fish on proper crunching venues like the Wye, Severn or Ireland

    ps. ... the best 3metre whip that I've ever owned, was a Lerc fibreglass top end of an 8metre pole, that I glued in a spliced tip...... There's no carbon expensive that could beat it. I could accidently hook a 3lb bream during a session, and be confident that it wouldn't break off. Unfortunately, it got stolen with my other gear, years ago 😊

    Oh, do you mean the 800 one that can also be elasticated and comes with all the bits to enable you to do so, thus creating an elasticated whip? "The whip comes as standard with a solid flick tip, but is also supplied with a Super Slick Internal PTFE bush, two types of PTFE plugs and PTFE bead to allow you to elasticate the number 2 section." 😂😂

    Of course there are elasticated whips! Where have you been the last 10+ years lol? All the top whips come with an option to elasticate them. Not many fish the wye, severn etc without elastic in their long whips.

  • @superbalaur1297

    @superbalaur1297

    Jon you have noticed yourself the difference between the two…“Elasticated whip” is a misnomer. It is the thin, flick-tip that makes a whip a whip! The elasticated variety should fall in the short pole category.

  • @JonArthur

    @JonArthur

    2 жыл бұрын

    All good debate and It’s all personal opinion of course, but I would have to disagree as whips come up to 10m in length (so not exactly ‘short poles’) and are regularly elasticated. All the top manufacturers make long 5m+ whips with an option of being elasticated. A whip that’s elasticated is exactly that; an elasticated whip. My old work colleague Dave Harrell and all his River Wye and Severn circuit use long elasticated whips with great success and at no point can I imagine them calling them short poles or elasticated poles. It’s all semantics I suppose but ‘whip fishing’ means fishing to hand to me and whips can be either elasticated or solid flick tips. Whips sold for juniors and starters are almost always elasticated too, these days, and mostly telescopic. I wouldn’t call a telescopic whip something else just because a carbon flicktip is not on the end, but that’s the beauty of fishing as everyone has an opinion. Now let’s discuss ‘bolo fishing’ and ‘bolo rods’ ha ha! 👍🤣
