I've seen and tried all methods of attaching rigs to the whip including that one, which I think Bob Nudd used, albeit a little shorter. However, I have never had a problem with the Stonfo. So simple to attach and detach.

Hello Mark Really pleased you are covering whip fishing. I like fishing the whip and I am sure I will gain lots of tips from you. Always a bit weary on where I fish it what with most waters containing carp.

I have fished the whip with great success for many years --- I know a lot of folks say to leave your rig about a foot short of the whip----I find that slows you down quite a bit,, if you have it about 3" short of the whip you dont need to move your hand position on the whip, when you unhook a fish and rebait -you then keep your hand in the same position on the whip as when you are fishing and hold your hook in the same hand and bait up with the other hand. and get it in the water again much quicker than if you have to reach for the hook.--Also I almost always fish the whip with my home made wagglers, which as long as theres not a heavy flow are far far superior to using a top and bottom float -especially in the wind.

In the days when I did serious speed fishing which was a long time ago my rigs would have been set exactly how I wanted them. It was a long time ago but it did vary a bit according to the size of fish - quite often the size of fish I was after were very small - down to 85 to the pound. To avoid baiting up very often the bait was usually toughened pinkies with a couple of pints being bought every week but only the ones 3 or 4 weeks old being used. It was possible to get many fish on one bait. For these small fish a waggler float was far too slow - mostly I had very small top and bottom pole floats, with the fish sometimes struck BEFORE the bait hit the water - by the time the strike started the bait had hit the water and been taken.

Am I mistaken or was it you that wrote a wonderful article on short whip fishing that featured on the Fishing Magic website?

I probably did do an article or two about whip fishing on FM but I seem to recall others did too.

Used to use that method of attaching years ago but still got wrap overs. Just use a stonfo now cause its quick and easy.. I think the wind direction has a lot to do with it.. Anyway wheres that venue Mark.. It looks lovely?

With very fine tips such as on the Browning Profil the Stonfo is too big. In my long-gone speed fishing days eliminating wraps on the tip was vital and the stiff tube was best.

I use a 12 pound twizzle boom around the tip, found even the finest stonfos do break the tip off a fine flicktip in time.
