While a War Rages in Ukraine, A Global Crisis is Escalating in Somalia | Foreign Correspondent

Somalia is one of the most dangerous places on earth. Almost two decades of conflict with the al-Qaeda backed terrorist group al-Shabaab has taken a huge toll on the country.
Now Somalia is experiencing its worst drought in 40 years. With the world distracted by the war in Ukraine, the crisis is escalating away from the public gaze.
This week on Foreign Correspondent reporter Stephanie March and producer/cinematographer Matt Davis travel to Somalia where makeshift camps have become home to more than a million hungry children and their families.
There, they meet mothers with babies who have walked for days without food and very little water. They hear incredible stories of courage and survival in a landscape that is unforgiving and unsafe. And they also face their own safety problems when their security team worries al-Shabaab has been told of their whereabouts.
As the Somali government fights back against al-Shabaab, another threat, which they have no control over, is driving the extreme weather: climate change. In the midst of this turmoil, the Foreign Correspondent team meets extraordinary people who are determined to make their story one of survival.

My people have faced the worst crisis a human can experience. I saw people die due to lack of water and food while others were blown up by some crazy fanatics. Besides all those problems, we are resilient enough to soldier on and hope for the best. Amazing reporting by Stephanie March in illustrating such a terrible, unjust and harrowing situation in Somalia. It is incredibly unfair that, just by lottery of birth; some of us can be born into exceptionally comfortable circumstances while many others can be born into a life of privation, of eternal struggle. We all know that there's plenty of resources to go around, it's the spread and concentration of those resources that is problematic; exacerbated (as is always the case) by climate change. I doubt my own ability to 'hold out' even for the sake of loved ones in lives resembling these people in Somalia, they are brave and strong.

My point is that since the beginning of time people have been having plenty of children, and with the struggle they tried to make it. Who are we to judge because we have a different view on life.

What isn’t mentioned is Somali’s insane population increase. In 1950 it was a mere 2 million. It’s now 17 million. By 2050 it will be 35 million, rising by 1 million a year. This is due to poverty, corruption, male hegemony, a complete lack of female empowerment, zero contraception and crazy religious beliefs. The Sahel region was 50 million in 1950. It will be 1 billion in 2050. All will have no choice but to head north thanks to climate change and Western consumption habits. This will cause environmental and political collapse across Europe Not a word of this is mentioned anywhere except by brave souls like Attenborough and Goodall.

In my day when a person didn't know something they simply would say I don't know but hey things are different these days so more power to you. I spent 2014-1207, a total of 3 years in Mogadishu, Somalia to work with UNSOM...it was one of my memorable job locations where I have been served with pride and happiness. Although it is quite used to receiving plenty of mortar shells flying through the air, make indeed all kinds of sounds... to me, those mortar shells sounded more often like a swarm of birds unless they landed nearby points with a whistling sound but more like a cracking noise, not unlike a flash of lightning during a thunderstorm. Also experienced couple of standoffs, suicidal and complex attacks targeting our base location that is established near Halane Training Facility, Dagmada Waaberi, Mogadishu, Somalia. I do still hear the wild roars of the Indian ocean that accompanied me for the entire period of Mogadishu days. These memories are treasures... and my journey is still on -- so I am now in Kabul.
