Which Will Last Longer?? Electric Vs Gas!

Спорт

    I guess, the difference is now down to charging times, do you want to wait 2 hrs to charge or fill up in 5 mins, biggest advantage for gas is you can carry fuel, but you need to get EV to home to charge

    Thanks for the great content, Rich! I'm impressed with the battery life. What a cool bike. I'd like to see the comparison with a 250 or 300 four stroke (I own both). Hopefully the EMs get more affordable with time, so I can ride a used one someday. With patience, good used trials bikes can be found.

    For those newer to EV’s and don’t quite get the reason the batteries can charge quickly at first then slow down but, think of charging like stuffing a sleeping bag into a stuff sack. The first 50% goes in quick, as the sack fills the resistance goes up and it get more challenging and takes more effort to stuff more of the sleeping bag in. The cells in the battery pack work much in the same manner, obviously a grossly simplified explanation.

    Gas bike: Full tank of gas 1 minute; Gas up at the pits or anywhere you want; bring extra fuel with you for al all day trip; lighter; more snap; quiet enough; no batteries!! E-bike: charge at home for at least an hour; quiet; adequate trials bike; two years from now it could be obsolete with parts and support. Conclusion: if you have a gas trials bike, keep it; if you want a new one, consider the e-bike. If your trials bike is going to sit for a year or longer like it can, get a gas bike.

    As someone in the auto industry, I can tell you it's not how long / far the battery goes. It's how long it takes to get you back going that matters. Plus, the lifespan of batteries are still relatively short. Give me combustion please 😁

    I was surprised the gas trials bike ran out that quick. I have a Vertigo 250 and it lasts awhile on a tank. Like you said though 4+ hours of continuous drills is more than enough. Great that electric bikes have come this far. They would be great for someone who wants a practice bike they can ride in a populated environment.

    the bottom 20% will have lower power and the top 20% can theoretically have more power, but the electronics may or may not limit it. The effect will be more extreme the closer you are to the edges. Look up "voltage vs SOC lithium battery curve". Also for best battery life try to avoid those bottom and top 20%. the bottom of the charge and the extremes are more damaging. 1595 is pretty gentle on them while still giving you most of the range. Store at 50% when not in use.

    1) The EM trials bike will last longer than most riders have stamina to ride. A typical trials event is 4 - 6 hours but there is lots of downtime and it isn't straight riding all day. 2) For those that do have the stamina to ride more than 4 hours, this comparison stops making sense because the gas bike can be refilled as necessary. 3) On a typical competition loop it'll be 1 - 3 miles of riding. I will refill my gas bike every other loop just to be safe but probably could go 3 and maybe all 4 loops without refueling. With the EM I'd obviously not need to refuel the bike at all. Time in the pits would be purely taking a break. This won't apply to most of your audience that is just using a trials bike to practice for hard enduro. 4) Maintenance may be easier on the EM. No carb tuning, oil and coolant changes etc.Though you still have chain, brake/clutch system maintenance. Just charge and get on and ride. 5) I hope EM comes up with a better battery replacement solution. While not necessary on a new bike, used bikes with lots of cycles will need a new battery which is currently 50% of the cost of a new bike. Ouch. That hurts resale.

    Quinn Wentzel rode the expert line last year at a Nationals round on EM and ran out of battery. Next round he brought spare batteries and finished well. The last TKO had an electric class and many were on EM and reported 60% battery after 12 mile race. The Surron Storm Bee ran out of juice. A better test would be a trials riding day with lengthy connector trail riding. In my experience with that kind of riding it is easy to run out of gas before you run out of energy.

    Electric is very nice in a populated area where you can ride without noise issues. It is great in the city or in camp grounds with electrical hookups. I have a Surron and problem is out in area’s without electricity. Goes about 30 miles then out of juice, takes 2-3 hrs on a generator to charge. Pointless to have electric with generator and I do not bring Surron to somewhere like that. My 22 KTM 300 xcw is great for the outdoors, harder to ride in populated areas. The batteries will have a BMS built into them. This will cut power when the voltage drops low enough. The inverter will also have a low voltage cutoff programmed in as well, I would guess it’s set higher than the BMS as a safety precaution. Voltage sag will also have an effect, that’s likely why the inverter is programmed to reduce power below 10%. The BMS takes care of cell balancing during charge and is likely an active balancer as well during operation.

    The biggest concern most Americans may have is parts availability?

  • @usualsuspectsfor1k
    @usualsuspectsfor1k Жыл бұрын

    The downsides to electric are: 1) You can't refill with fuel in 1 minute. 2) There is no replacement parts market for them, and there won't be because they're evolving too quickly. Once your bike/motor breaks, it's a paperweight. 3) How many charge cycles is the battery rated for before it has the drop in it's capacity? Some are just a few hundred charges. Then you're down to 80% capacity max, and declining from there. 4) The biggest risk here is fire. If that battery case gets perforated or water enters it there will be explosive fire and it will take 8-12x the amount of water to put it out vs a gas vehicle fire. In many cases, it won't go out and will need to be submerged in a tank of water. Those that have seen this after hurricane Ian and watched in horror at Teslas and other EV's spontaneously combusting after exposure to the water, and reading reports from firefighters frustrated that their efforts to put out the fire are so much greater - and many times just don't work. Sometimes the only thing you get for being a pioneer is an aXXfull of arrows.

    Yes you are correct… as “one of those FFs “ during Ian/Nicole,I saw first hand how dangerous any EV is after water saturation….1000s of gallons of water are required hoping the fire will not restart….which it will invariably will recombust. Please also be advised that 95% of the towing companies in west Florida would not tow or store the abandoned/disabled EVs that were left on the side of the road due to zero charge as a result of widespread power outages resulting in ZERO charging stations available or water intrusion, why?. because of the explosive fire hazard they pose. In many cases the inconsiderate owners/drivers would simply leave their dead EVs in the roadway creating dangerous blockages…. IMHO, EVs are an answer to a non existent question…

    1) he didnt need to refuel, so it doesnt matter 😂 2) thats bs. EM have standard parts across all models. Same motor. Its very easy to get replacement parts and some parts are shared with other brands. They did have QA issues in the ‘20/‘21 MY. 3) em battery is rated for 1000 cycles. Thats riding daily for 4 hours daily for 10 yrs. 4) fire has not been an issue for well designed brands which em falls into. Definitely correct on electric model advancements and losing value. There are massive differences between the ‘21 and ‘25 model years. But you can still ride trials either ways, just like any bike. We’re not accustomed to real r&d advancement as ICE oems do everything to give the least amount of upgrades until the competition force them to. Electric is much lower cost so there are more players. BYD is going to help the world get great cheap vehicles!
