    I am surprised you did not rate Fantasy Grounds higher. I have used a couple of VTTs like Foundry, Roll 20, FGC, FGU, and brief tests with others, and nothing compares to FGU in my opinion. Obviously it is quite pricy, but without a subscription cost I have had my money worth it! It is robust, has many QoL features, and great for setting up various custom effects, and have some mods as well.

    Gotta say, One More Multiverse was by far the most interesting VTT you showed here. I think it's really hard to build something that's generally more compelling than Roll20, Foundry, or FGU. But that pixel art aesthetic could be really compelling for the right type of game. This is the same reason that Alchemy stands out as well.

The sheer amount of accessibility and customization options, with hundreds of actively developed modules and systems (not to mention official D&D 5e support) is just an unbeatable combo. OMM looks really interesting as well, but Roll20 didnt age well and is often a pain to manage.

    I think it's also worth mentioning Tabletop Simulator. There are a bunch of dungeon tiles models, and you can make billboarded minis using in-game tools, orbuy models from hero forge to import your own 3d minis. It's not purpose built for ttrpgs, but it can support them very well if you spend some time getting familiar.

    Foundry also has purchasable full adventure paths for Pathfinder now too. They are super complete with all the content plus extras for a VTT like soundtracks. I’ve been using Foundry for a year or so now. It was a learning curve for sure but I recently tried Roll20 which by comparison is sooo painful to use. This is seriously the video I needed. I started making maps with Inkarnate, as they have a really good system with cool assets (figured I'd pay for a month and get everything done I needed to in that time) but then after that was totally lost. I was to the point where I was looking at using RPG Maker MV (with a fog of war and co-op plugin) because the amount of information out there was just so overwhelming. All I needed was a digital map system to use for a game that's taking place in person (and the fog of war/darkness aspect would be really nice too for the final dungeon).

I imported my Inkarnate map into OBR, but I can't figure out how to move it, or anything. Might have to look up a tutorial. If I could just figure out how to get the plugins on RPG Maker to work right, I could be onto something. Honestly am just trying to find a simple map thing I can put on my windows laptop (for free) and connect to the TV so my maps and tokens are up there, and can be moved with the mouse. I appreciate the research time involved here - especially given more than one with that steep learning curve, so thank you for that! I've been using Harpy for my games lately, and I was curious if you wouldn't mind sharing a bit more of your opinion on that one.

  • @DiceAndEasy

    @DiceAndEasy

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you for the kind words! Appreciate it! I felt that Harpy has an interesting angle with the 3D assets but currently it feels too complex to be useful for a simple scenario and lacking features like automation etc. to be considered for a complex scenario. I also had a very hard time just setting up a map, getting some characters in, and trying to do a round of combat. Granted, I only gave the VTT about 1 hour of testing time so it could be that once you get into it, things flow better.

  • @turixrehm

    @turixrehm

    @@DiceAndEasy That's entirely fair, Harpy's definitely not the best battle map out there. It's served me really well for more social games, though. As you say, there's no One Best VTT - having so many on the market is great in that you can get one that fits your table well, even if it can make it hard to shop around for the right one (and I like the way you grouped them in this video for GMs to see what's most relevant to them). • @DiceAndEasy

    @DiceAndEasy

    You're welcome! I would say for your music needs, Foundry is better suited. The music system in Alchemy currently is very basic. You can set a background track and combat track per map, and ambient tracks for both of those as well but that's it. Although, Alchemy is working on a new music system which apparently let's you fade between different types of tracks. It looks cool but isn't out yet so I don't know how well it will work. On Foundry, the music controls are better out of the box than Foundry but still aren't too powerful. You can set up playlists and change between them. However there are modules that allow you to set a custom track per player or NPC, add layered music etc. so for your needs Foundry is probably the best option.

I am looking for something super simple so Owlbear/Discord seems to be the right combo for me. However, I have a question for you, how do you set your VTT nicely so you have the play zone in the middle and your player's video chat all around it?

  • @DiceAndEasy

    @DiceAndEasy

    11 ай бұрын

    Thanks for watching the video! It can definitely feel overwhelming when starting to look at VTTs. Regarding setup, what I do is I have 2 screens and on one screen I have my VTT (usually Foundry VTT) and on the other I have my Discord call. You are able to pop out a call in Discord so you can have it in a separate screen. If you would want the videos from the call to be in the VTT nicely, you would have to use a VTT that has in built video call functionality. Not all of them have that though and the quality of those varies wildly.

    @@Ziplock9000 they already released the 2D VTT on DnD Beyond so we’re already there. They are attempting to fully cover the VTT market with it and the upcoming 3D VTT. On top of that they ended a publishing deal with one huge physical book distributer so they are clearly wanting to push more people to DnD Beyond.

    No TablePlop ; video instantly outdated.

    It looks like Tableplop hasn’t been updated in almost a year. As such, it doesn’t meet the criteria of being considered for this video.

    Roll20 is so mediocre, is fine for a free product but not to invest monthly fee or modules there.

    Agreed that it's fine for basic use but for advanced use, there are better options. The Roll20 engine overhaul they are working on at the moment could make a huge difference to the VTT. Also, to their credit, they have been adding a lot of sorely needed features to the VTT in the last 2 years. I feel like their strategy and direction changed drasticallyabout 2 years ago and they have been improving the VTT ever since.
