Which Ten Commandments?

Missionary Evangelist Robert Breaker talks about the 10 commandments and how the Catholics take out the 2nd commandment from their list and make two out of the tenth one. Could it be because they are guilty of not obeying it, with their many images in their places of worship?

Welcome to the family! I have in laws that are Catholic and every time I bring up Jesus, they squirm. It’s bizarre. Keep learning about Jesus through the Bible and prayer and worship (singing), and you won’t look back. Try and find a church that teaches through the Bible. God bless!

Some Protestants claim that the Catholic Church changed the second commandment in order to justify its idolatrous practice of having graven images in its places of worship. But is this true? In this video, Karlo gives reasons why the Church didn’t change the second commandment and why its practice of having statues is not idolatrous. Transcript: Some Protestants like to charge the Catholic Church with changing the Ten Commandments in order to keep the idolatrous practice of having statues in its places of worship. They argue that Catholics omitted the second commandment in Exodus 20, which forbids the making of graven images. But is this true? No, here are some reasons why. First, it’s important to note as the Catechism of the Catholic Church does in paragraph 2066 that the division and numbering of the Commandments have varied throughout the centuries. The division and numbering that the Catholic Church follows, as well as the Lutheran confession, is that of St. Augustine, which differs slightly from the division worked out by the Greek Fathers, which is found in the Orthodox Churches and Reformed communities. But concerning the commandment in question, like Augustine we see it as merely an extension of the first: “You shall have no other gods before me.” In light of the context, it seems that Augustine was right, for immediately after God prohibits the making of “graven images,” he says in verse five, “You shall not bow down to them or serve them.” The prohibition is against idolatry, not the making of images in an absolute sense. If the commandment were a prohibition against making images, then God would have contradicted himself when he commanded Moses in Exodus 25 to make two gold cherubim and put them over the mercy seat on the Ark of the Covenant. But that’s absurd. Finally, among those communities that have as their second commandment the prohibition to make graven images, they also combine the prohibition of coveting your neighbor’s wife and goods as one commandment. But a man’s wife is not the same as a man’s property. That these are two distinct commandments, which his how the Catholic Church views them, is made clearer in the list found in Deuteronomy chapter five. So, the Catholic Church didn’t change the second commandment. And more importantly, it’s not guilty of idolatry in having statues in its places of worship.

Back at the ranch which one of Gods moral laws can Christians disregard in good conscience today? The redeemed of the Lord are free from condemnation; the second death. God forbid free from morality. Paul says Romans 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. Think on this: Gods moral law makes the arrest the gospel sets you free.

Sorry…I absolutely agree that the 10 commandments are a good basis for the moral law. I also agree that we are no longer under the law. I born and raised Catholic, but left that church and am a born again Christian. I was also in Catholic Schools fi4 12 years, so I cannot answer as to what may or may not have been taught regarding Christianity in public schools before everything was outlawed. But I have to disagree that the 10 commandments in schools is no5 enough. It has to be. We live in an increasingly secular society, with much more diverse religious beliefs, including new age and atheism. I’m not saying we shouldn’t witness to people. I am saying the public schools should not be burdened with that responsibility. That then becomes proselytizing. Freedom of religion (not from religion) was codified to honor the belief that the government should not establish a state religion. Th3 fact remains that much of the U.S. population USED TO BE Christian. More than 1/2 still declare Christianity as their belief system. How far they take that Is another thing. But a Jew, or a Muslim, or an atheist, should not be dictated to by a public school teacher. For the same reason that we, as Christians, do not want lgbtq/gender/teen sex issues, etc. freely taught as part of the public school curriculum, we should respect a neutral stance concerning spiritual things. As long as the government (federal) is in charge of public education, we need to keep government out of religion. Yes, it would be wonderful to teach the blood atonement of Jesus in the classroom. But I would not expect a Muslim teacher to

  • @Recoveringcatholic

Sorry, editing to add as it posted in error: I would not expect a Muslim teacher to be required to teach the Gospel, as much as I would not expect them to teach about Muhammad, or a new age teacher to gave a class on the healing properties of crystals. Extra-curricular is fine, when there is a choice to be in a prayer group club, or an after school activity involving another belief system. I’ll settle for the 10 commandments as a win and a possible catalyst for questions that could lead to the gospel, in the home or after school. Like Robert said…they are a great basis for living a good life. It’s a beginning. No one is saying this is a religious mandate…just rules by which we all should strive to live. I feel that a Robert’s insistence that this is not enough is exactly why much of the secular (including churches) population objects to anything at all. Yes, it would be wonderful…no, it isn’t possible or practical to be pushing it. God bless,

Totally agree with the contents of this video. Yes, the original 10 commandments are a guide only and not something anyone honestly can keep - you break one, you break all. Once you are born again - believing in 1 Cor. 15:1-4 you do automatically not want to do anything wrong. Will you slip, yes, but you should be following the Holy Spirit's guidance. Of course, you'll feel like garbage when you sin after salvation. Jesus took our punishment for sins. We should live a moral life, but we're not naturally sin-free, we will slip. Thank you, precious Jesus, for your sacrifice.

If everyone keeps interpreting Scripture in their own, we will continue having more and more denominations spring up. The Catholic Church canonized the Bible and has the autnority to interpret it. Anyone can read it. If people would study what the Church believes from the source, instead of listening to liars, just about everyone would be Catholic. Why follow a 16th century novelty instead of the Church that has been here for 2k years?

Thank you brother Breaker! Something came to me this morning. An amazing comparison between the Israelites in the wilderness and the church age, including when the holy spirit was poured out on the disciples. 50 days from assension to the outpouring of the Spirit. 40 years wandering the wilderness. 2000 years = 40 Jubilees, periods of 50. If the millennium begins around 2000 years since the cross, then after and still denying their Messiah, Israel today will have been "wandering lost in the wilderness" if you will, before their entry into the promised land, for "40 periods of time" just like in Exodus, specifically 40 periods of 50. My mind was blown when the full realization came to me

The Catholic Church does not believe any statue or image has any power in and of itself. The beauty of statues and icons move us to the contemplation of the Word of God as he is himself or as he works in his saints. And, according to Scripture, as well as the testimony of the centuries, God even uses them at times to impart blessings (e.g., healings) according to his providential plan. While it can certainly be understood how a superficial reading of the first commandment could lead one to believe we Catholics are in grave error with regard to our use of statues and icons, the key to a proper understanding of the first commandment is found at the very end of that same commandment, in verse 5 of Exodus 20: “You shall not bow down to them or serve [adore] them.” The Lord did not prohibit statues; he prohibited the adoration of them. If God truly meant that we were not to possess any statues at all, then he would later contradict himself. Just five chapters after this commandment in Exodus 20, God commanded Moses to build the ark of the Covenant, which would contain the presence of God and was to be venerated as the holiest place in all of Israel. Here is what God commanded Moses concerning the statues on it: And you shall make two cherubim of gold; of hammered work shall you make them, on the two ends of the mercy seat. Make one cherub on the one end, and one cherub on the other end; of one piece with the mercy seat shall you make the cherubim on its two ends (Ex. 25:18-19). In Numbers 21:8-9, not only did our Lord order Moses to make another statue in the form of a bronze serpent, he commanded the children of Israel to look to it in order to be healed. The context of the passage is one where Israel had rebelled against God, and a plague of deadly snakes was sent as a just punishment. This statue of a snake had no power of itself-we know from John 3:14 it was merely a type of Christ-but God used this image of a snake as an instrument to effect healing in his people. Further, in 1 Kings 6, Solomon built a temple for the glory of God, described as follows: In the inner sanctuary he made two cherubim of olivewood, each ten cubits high. . . . He put the cherubim in the innermost part of the house. . . . He carved all the walls of the house round about with carved figures of cherubim and palm trees, and open flowers, in the inner and outer rooms. . . . For the entrance to the inner sanctuary he made doors of olivewood. . . . He covered the two doors of olivewood with carvings of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers; he overlaid them with gold (1 Kgs. 6:23, 27, 29, 31, 32). King Solomon ordered the construction of multiple images of things both “in heaven above” (angels) and “in the earth beneath” (palm trees and open flowers). And then, after the completion of the temple, God declared he was pleased with its construction (1 Kgs. 9:3). Didn’t God know what King Solomon had done? It becomes apparent, given the above evidence, that a strictly literal interpretation of Exodus 20:2-5 is erroneous. Otherwise, we would have to conclude that God prohibits something in Exodus 20 that he commands elsewhere.

@@echoofthevoiceinthewildern3008 I have been following conspiracies all of my life and I have to say, sda (the church I followed online anyhow) was into every conspiracy under the sun. Whether you call that the truth or a lie matters not what matters is the grace of Jesus Christ. This man preached the truth nobody should judge another by the day he regardeth. Most people believe you sdas are a cult but I believe it's honorable if you can keep the sabbath in a spiritual way. But nowhere in the new testament is it required of Gentiles, right? And I've heard the Hebrews chapter 4 argument and I'm not convinced that it's a command to keep the sabbath . It clearly says in verse 3 of Hebrews chapter 4 that we which have believed do enter into rest. And for some reason I'm supposed to read verse 4 and believe that it's a command to keep the sabbath when it's not clear at all to be commanding that. If God wanted me to keep His sabbath still as a Gentile then there would be no skirting the truth of the matter I wouldn't be able to read this and not get convicted to do it. I believe you sdas have good intentions but you're putting a yoke on yourselves that may not be necessary. As I said if you can keep the sabbath in a spiritual way then more power to you but it seems to me like more of a burden on you than anything. The sabbath was made for man not man for the sabbath.

I'm going through a difference of opinion right now between me and the pastor of my church. He spends 97% of his time studying the Old Testament. I say to him that's good to know how we got to where we are today but we are under grace today. Actually, the Law only served to condemn people, not save them. The lesson we should draw is that, try as you might, you cannot save yourself. You and I and and even the Jew must beg Jesus to atone for our sins in our place. We must trust in that blood that was shed for us. Period. I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior because of what he did and not what I do, have done, or will do. That blood and my trust in it is the reason I'm saved. Period. When will people stop trying to add to it? I tell the pastor, people don't think Christianity is hard enough. They speak disdainfully and call it easy believism. Well, either you believe or you don't. There is nothing easy about it. The world keeps telling us something more but it's that simple. Yes, but there is nothing easy about it. It took me 60 years to strip everything else away. I can't get it right. But He did and I trust Him.

@@ryanesau8147 The Catholic Church does not believe any statue or image has any power in and of itself.
