    “I know a lot of people don’t use a helmet when they sport climb,” is not a great reason to not show one being packed, and also no trauma or first aid kit. Climbers should be wearing helmets and bringing first aid kits. This is a crag bag, and there is space for basics. I say this as a non helmet wearing sport climber and as someone who has patched a few significant lacerations.

    Yeah you’re right, and he even says there is space for it, and that it can be strapped to the outside. Do you need to watch someone else do it for you to be able to figure it out?

    @@BargainBinkey my comment has nothing to do with needing a demonstration of him packing and everything to do with normalizing use of a helmet for sport climbing, and hence why I mentioned first aid. Further, helmets are rigid and odd structures thus are difficult to pack, and many packs have helmet holders on the outside because of this, so unlike needing a demonstration of his car registration fitting into a guide book pocket maybe showing the helmet being packed rather than just explaining that it is possible to would be useful. This video is several minutes of him packing… you missed my point entirely but still have a ridiculous argument.

    I have the Patagonia Cragsmith 40 and it does everything here plus more. It can fit an internal hydration bladder, has padded hip belts with storage pocket (only on one side though which I still think is odd), has a helmet-shaped padded pocket, top storage pocket for guide book with internal zippered pocket for small items and a key loop. It has handles for moving from one route to the other or clipping QuickDraws and dual external pockets for bottles or a clip-stick (with g-hook style straps). The only thing it’s missing is an included rope tarp; I would love a Patagonia rope tarp.

    I really like the fact that that Camp pack opens from the back meaning the back and straps don't get ground into the dirt when you put it down.

    I know 3 packs that also do that. They don't look like the Camp but they do look like one another: lowe alpine rogue (I have and am happy with it), patagonia crag smith (seems they only make it in 32L now which would def be too small IMO), Mammut neon gear. They all have top entry and back entry. I lay it down in the dirt/sand/rock and leave it open. Packing up tend to shove it all in the top entry so I can get out of there.

    I did heaps of research on climbing packs, decided on the Lowe Alpine 48 (different style than in video but same line) Hard to find many reviews on it online but it looked good from what I did see and found it on sale online. Very happy with it. Tempted to enter the world of video reviews...

    As someone with a similar backpack issue, Matt why must you be such an enabler! 😂 I currently have a blue ice koala for my rope bag that’s shove into the bottom of a BD creek 50 and then I just pile everything else on top. Everything with a carabiner is clipped onto a little cordellette sling. That outcast looks so nice though.. 😩

  • @Zelpnir
    @Zelpnir3 жыл бұрын

    i own the outcast and absolutely love it. The only thing I would improve would be to add some outside loops. Not because they are necessary but for comfort. Sometimes it is good to get the helmet out early because of rockfall or just to add smelly climbing shoes and dusty chalk bag to the outside.

  • @OriginalDestro

    Exactly!!! Also own outcast and I love everything about it (spacious, comfortable, VERY durable, great materials, smart, imo very nice colour-wise, ...) but I really miss some outside loops to the extend that I was thinking of adding some myself...

    All these bags should come with a helmet clip, my osprey pack has one and its super convenient for attaching a helmet to a pack. its just so good and simple it should be standard.

    It's good for short sessions but sadly it doesn't hold everything in that list if you need a 60 m rope. For example, for a full day at the crag I cannot fit enough water and food in it or a jacket if one is needed.

    None of these quite do it for me. I usually bring more than one pair of climbing shoes as well as more food and layers. I also sometimes bring a knee pad or a whole trad rack. None of these packs quite have enough room for all my stuff!

    Pretty different use cases alpine packs are smaller and for less stuff, for me an alpine pack is half the size and weight of a pack for the crag. Something you can wear and comfortably climb in while wearing

    I have, feature set was great but not a comfortable carry, which is an issue I have heard from others. Removing the back panel helped, and I think the removable hip belt just isn’t worthwhile for the loss of stability when we are talking a framed and sheeted pack. As well, the compression wing inside is neat but wanted straps outside which there are sewn loops to add but shouldn’t have to. Just too much to be changed.
