Which Pokémon is the BEST in Melee?

Yeah yeah I know what you're gonna say: "Copperhead sold his soul to the ranking video devil and now he's only gonna do ranking videos forever!" Well, joke's on you because I ENJOYED making this ranking video.
I've had this idea for a long time and I actually started making it like half a year ago and gave up. I resumed my work and realized that Odyssey Central uploaded basically the exact video but for Ultimate. Oh well.
Thanks subscribing and/or staying subbed. You 5k folks are the true homies.

Playing with Pokéballs on, toggled to the maximum quantity was always the most fun way to play as a kid with my brother and cousins. So fun and chaotic. Porygon was definitely the best one lol.

I also used to do that in both N64 Smash and Melee! When I was bored by myself, I used to play a team match as Pikachu (my favorite character) with two other Pikachus as teammates with 99 stocks vs a single Jigglypuff CPU on level 1 on the Mushroom Kingdom stage with Pokéballs as the only item on at maximum spawn rate. (I used to really dislike Jigglypuff back then lol!) The whole chaotic match lasted like an hour and I racked up a lot of vs mode play time which also unlocked other stuff in the game. Good times. 😊

The developers decided this mechanic After a brawl in the office, with 5 people injured and 1 dead. After this accident, they wanted to finish developing the game as fast as they could, that's how melee was born and that's why we have Roy and Game & Watch ad low tiers. You have to believe what I Just wrote
I swear I once heard as a kid that Goldeen could rarely use Horn Drill for a one-hit KO. I never saw it but that's always my first thought whenever Goldeen is summoned.

As a kid, I could have sworn this was the case. It came out, I heard the critical hit sound, and I flew off the stage. I told everyone about it because I was so excited to find it out. I agree. It's a party game first and I still occasionally play with items with friends.
even the easiest to dodge pokemon are still useful, taking options away from your opponent is always good. if you play a character with a strong aerial the next time you get something like marill as soon as its about to hit them jump and do the strong aerial, they either jump into it to avoid the marill, shield to block the marill and wont be able to punish you or they just get hit by the marill and obviously cant punish and you can try to combo off that.

It’s like what Alpharad said when he ranked all of Ultimate’s Pokémon, more specifically Abomasnow: The fact that you can avoid it doesn’t make it bad, the fact that you HAVE to avoid it makes it good.

I always felt Ho-Oh and Lugia were the two best Pokémon in Melee (along with Raikou), because of their huge hitboxes and insane KO potential, either during the move or afterwards. And if I had to pick a single best Pokémon, it would be Lugia definitely.
in every smash game, having pokeballs (and assist trophies by extension), is always a blast. It changes the game up in a radically different way, where now you have an extra threat to work around in creative ways. I think Ultimate has the best balance of pokemon. Each one does great damage, but there attacks are limited in just such a way that they can be dodged if you know what you're doing.

Perhaps I'm working on it. Perhaps not. You can prove nothing.
Scizor is my favorite Pokémon of all time due to him being in melee when I was a kid and loved it when he got stocks. Happy to see him really high up, solid tier list as well.
The video we were waiting for 2 decades
I've been playing Melee since late 2004. With that, I've gotten somewhat attached to the dozens of Poké Ball Pokémon. Porygon2 isn't who I'd consider the strongest Pokémon in SSBM, but he comes terrifyingly close. Getting hit by him does a tremendous amount of knockback! I'd slot Lugia as the strongest one; getting hit while he's onstage does crazy knockback, and the ensuing Aeroblast move does even more damage, combos around, and inevitably KOs anyone. Incidentally, my favorite Poké Ball Pokémon here is Zapdos. His Thundershock technique won't KO anyone, but taking up to 81% damage isn't so shabby! What's more, Zapdos himself looks nice in 3D with his paper-thin wings. Nice video!
more content like this pls, we need more variety in melee content
Finally, a tierlist that matters.

Man, it was so crazy. I had a strategy guide for Melee as a kid (bought it to figure out how to unlock all the characters and stages and stuff, etc.) and they had a Pokemon list and ditto was included. I must've played the game for hundreds of hours or something and never encountered Ditto once, and as a kid I always fuckin' wondered about that. Not making it into the game but making it into a fucking strategy guide item list is pretty hilarious.
This video needed to exist! Of course we played a lot with the High ratio items and only poke balls!

As someone who regularly play with items and advanced tech on a moderately high level I'd definately rank scizor at least top 5 as I'm pretty sure it does follow the opponent and kills more often than not if it hits. Also I'd put venasaur at top 3 that thing is a menace as it does also hit on platforms above it granting instant stage controll for the owner. That being said, amazing video and topic, very well put together. I also loved the examples you showed while talking about certain scenarios. Thanks for making this!

Aaa nostalgic I love the Pokémons in Melee. Now either my memory don´t serve me well or there is a difficulty diffrence between regions becuse I remember Moltres sure dose a lot of damage but I am sure I have been above it but not knocked out that often, mostly hit up and to either direction still able to recover. Same with a lot of things here, it seemed like your game it is easier to get knocked away. Porygon 2 I remember fearly easy to recover from and not that strong as you showed it here. So now I am curious. I have to boot up my old console and give it a go.

Something i love about pokemon specifically as an item is stage control. Even if it wont hit, it will change where your opponent can go and you call them out for it. Like how reflectors arent used loads, partly because the opponent uses less projectiles to avoid them but that weakens their character overall. Its just something i find interesting

Exactly. This is why it's actually kind of tough to rank Pokémon, since they all affect stage control in different ways that aren't so easy to see.

Great vid, as a casual fan, I only have one complaint: missed opportunity to say it's "Porygon-too-late"
I think Scizor is the best. If you're playing on a tournament legal stage I could see Porygon 2 being the best, but Scizor is fast, unpredictable, and has great kill potential. He has more kill potential than the legendaries, and is more difficult to avoid. Maybe I'm just too used to playing on Temple tho.

Cool comment
Damn, now i want to see this with every smash game
Great video, but I have some notes on your tierlist: - You mention that knowing how to di makes some pokemon better or worse (weezing). I think this tiertlist is decided for the casual audience? A 'competitive' pokemon tier list (meaning, people who actually know how to di and such) could be different. - Character usage in casual is probably more diverse than competitive, which probably means that there are less spacies and more floaties (a lot of kirby for example). This changes some of the power of the pokemon since the combo potential is less. - Also I think this list is based on 1v1? Playing with 4 people can also affect the power of certain pokemon. - I assume that in your testing you had a bias for playing on certain stages. I see the legal stages a lot, and not many 'big stages' (fourside, hyrule). Pokemon that follow the opponent will be stronger in bigger stages I think. - As mentioned by other commenters, I think you underestimate the power of NEEDING to dodge a pokemon, otherwise you would get hit by the opponent.Taklng optionsaway is strong. - also where are pichu, Pikachu, jigglypuff and mewtwo ;)
I appreciate it being straight to the point. Very rare nowadays.

Personally I think you down play the easy to avoid Pokémon. Those Pokémon essentially cut off a portion of the stage for the opponent which can be useful for A. Getting more pokemon. B. Charge Specials like Samus' Charge Blast or C. Stall.
I can't even remember the last time I used an item in a round of smash bros. My friends and I always play with tournament rules so it's been a while.
Luigi’s kick at the end was the best

Hey just wanted to point out something you missed. AFTER Porygon 2's Tackle, if you're within the radius of the dimension door that it leaves through, it will take you into the alternate dimension and you will immediately die. It's extremely rare that this will ever happen due to the person you're fighting being on the opposite side of the map, but I've been in 4-player matches where a 3rd player knocked a 4th player into the Porygon 2's dimension door, which is how I know this. Otherwise, great video. PS: it may take a few attempts to replicate as you'll need to avoid Porygon 2's hitbox while attempting to execute this.
