I'm convinced the "Worksharp Pocket Knife Sharpener" is so named because it's intended to sharpen pocket knives, not because it's intended to be carried in a pocket.

I'm really pleased with this! It works like a charm kzread.infoUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ Takes less time than my old electric sharpener because it can take more off the knife faster, and then it smooths out nicely with the finer grit polisher. I don't know how long it will last before the grit wears away, but I wouldn't mind having to replace it every once in a while.

It could work but I wouldn't recommand it. For a blade that long I would use the Work Sharp Field Sharpener (not the pocket version, the big one !), a DMT stone or any whetstone. Great video. As always. I just recently picked up and now keep the DC4 and CC4 (same thing but with an even finer ceramic on one end instead of the diamond stone) and with those two as a combo, I can keep a hair popping edge on my blades without almost ever having to do work to them at home. Both being a 2 x 4 footprint makes it nice if you're concerned with space. Pair those with a little compound on the back of one of the leather slips and you've essentially got a full sharpening kit that's portable!

Although (as you show) you can strop your knife against almost anything (trouser, belt, newspaper etc) I found it neat to simply glue a piece of leather on to one of the sides of the Worksharp Pocket Knife Sharpener. Actually I could not find a piece of leather laying around that was thick enough, so I used two layers. Cut to fit the "opening" on one of the sides and glued on. Works fine for stropping. Done the same with a Fällkniven DF24 sharpener, glued a piece of leather on the backside - whole length of handle. This is actually the "pocket" sharpener I prefer carry on longer hikes, as is weighs nothing and is easy fit in my repair kit bag.

Make sure you buy a high quality emery board. Cheap ones all the abrasive will come off in a couple passes if it's a cheap one... A good emery board will cost about 3 bucks each. A good one will have one side with about 250 grit silicon carbide and the other side will be about 800 grit silicon carbide... A good board Will refresh an edge on a knife about 10 times depending on how hard the steel is.. But it will touch up even K390 at 67HRC

I use Fällkniven CC4 or DC4 (old version of ceramic). If going the economical route just glue some sandpaper (the ones you can use wet) with grit of your choise to a flat piece of wood. Use this as a strop to prolong the usable service of the sandpaper. Grit I use is about 240 and 800 because thats what I have at hand.

Wet-dry sandpaper on wood is an excellent idea.👍 You can make it any size you like, pick your choice of grits, spend $5 and still have 3 pieces of sandpaper left over! One could also buy a plain small ceramic rod for like $6 if you want to get fancy, and just make a slip for it. 70+ bucks for that Benchmade is crazy! Very expensive 'butterfly tax'. lol

Credit to Buck's metallurgy that they can make 420HC cut even slightly after being dragged across a ceramic brick. I'm quite pleased with my DC4. The diamond side is aggressive enough to do some serious work, while the ceramic is fine enough to get a perfectly workable edge. And the two sides aren't so disparate that you'd need a third grit in the middle.

Worksharp field sharpener is about the same size as the larger worksharp you have but gives you SOO much more. Get a rough diamond plate that is much larger and also a fine diamond plate. I suggest the eze-lap dual sided pocket stones. They're around $22. They have a fine diamond side and an ultra-fine ceramic side. They are all you will ever need for basic honing and finishing, but you will need more coarse stuff for reprofiling really messed up edges and maybe a strop for making the edge perfect before storage. No gimmicks with these, just a nicely sized stone in a little leather pocket sheath.

It's worth mentioning you can get away with a lot with ceramic and pressure on the stone and is potentially much more versatile than course grits. If I put a bunch of force on it and do it enough times, I can remove a hell of a lot of metal from even things like vanadium carbide steels. And if I apply feather light pressure I can lower the amount of metal being removed and make it seem like a finer grit pass. You can't really do the same with course stones, especially very course stones, and apply light enough pressure to still remove metal but not leave larger scratch patterns. I say this mostly about diamond and aluminum oxide stones. Diamond, being as hard as it is, is going to remove metal and make scratches if you make any significant contact because even the hardest knife steels are still no where as hard as diamond is. You can lower the aggressiveness of diamond with pressure on the stone and bevel, but given diamond's properties it will always be more aggressive than if it was the same "grit" in ceramic. It's a versatility and speed/effectiveness trade-off. Diamond is much, much faster. Ceramic is much more versatile, but slower. It's always better to have both, I say.

The Best are the Worksharp field sharpener, the Fallkniven CC4. For pocket knives and Victorinox SAKS, their Dual knife sharpener, is a quality option, that can be used from both more experienced users and not experienced ones. Victorinox also makes a small orange colour stone. which is kind of medium grid, however, works really good for it's size. Only con with that, is that it isn't ceramic, so you cant avoid dishing.

One other thing that popped into my head - I remember way back when I got into knives, and more specifically woodcarving, I was told by quite a few people that for touch ups in between proper sharpening sessions it's best to use trailing edge strokes on pocket/field sharpeners. I'd be curious if there is a significant difference in the efficiency of trailing edge vs leading edge passes on these systems.

I like the Spyderco Double Stuff (best stones, but a little too long to hold between the thumb and middle finger). The DC4 could be a little bigger and the ceramic side is too coarse after the diamond. The CC4 comes with a nice fine side which I would prefer on the DC4 too. I also like the small 4'' metal bench stones from DMT. Would be nice if DMT glued a fine ceramic on the other side. I know some of the foldable DMT sharpeners have that ceramic side. But I don't like those plastic sharpeners.

On the work Sharp micro sharpener, I think it’s a lot easier to move the stones across the edge, instead of moving the knife across the stone. Good Video👍

I use an unbranded folding diamond field sharpener from ebay for like $6. It's actually really great. Its 400 one side and 600 the other and it folds out like a butterfly knife.

I've had great success with diamond DMT Diafolds. Single or double sided so choose your grits. Very pocketable and have a work area that long enough. A bigger investment but worth it.

Own a DMT diafold myself. Works well and YMMV but personally was just a bit too bulky to fit where I wanted it, plus the butterfly handles feel cheap and seem to like opening up randomly whenever I tossed it in the pack. Found myself not really wanting to bring it along much... Just picked up one of the victorinox sharpeners myself to replace it. Smaller, seems better designed, and will be a lot easier to slip in a pouch.

I know it isn't the subject; when I travel it is usually a week or two, so I just take a strop mounted on wood and loaded with green compound. I rarely sharpen with anything else.

Have you checked out the worksharp guided field sharpener? It’s got coarse and fine diamond plates, a coarse and fine ceramic, and a strop. It’s about $25 American dollars and I think it’s about the same size as the worksharp pocket sharpener.
