I'm a glider pilot and I really like the orange tinted lenses for better contrast, it can be hard to spot a white glider in the sky at the best circumstances so the higher contrast can really help. That said it is also important to know that the yellow, orange and red blocks out some of the blue light that is important for depth perception. The brain will compensate for that but as it takes a while to adapt it is absolutely crucial to keep them on for the whole flight. Taking them off just before landing can make for a really bad end of a great day.

PLEASE NOTE: what you suggest in avoiding polarized glasses is surely correct up there in the cockpit...but down here on the water world they are essential to safe seaplane work. Don't forget us. We are everywhere down here.

Consider wearing sports glasses. As an action shooting competitor I have to wear glasses on the gun range for many hours. And I also wear ear protection. So I face the same problem. Also my eyesight leaves to be desired so I need my prescription glasses as well. I solved all these problems by getting an Oakley sport glasses that a) have interchangeable sunglass filters (several colors available and I choose one depending on the weather - yellow in winter or in bad weather and brown or gray in summer) b) have a dioptrical insert behind the sunglass filter that I was able to tailor to my specific prescription c) you can either choose to use arms or you use a rubber band instead of arms. It doesn't look so cool but it's much more comfortable and doesn't hurt to wear with ear protection all the time.

You should do an update and try Flying Eyes sunglasses! They’re the only ones I’ve found that actually fit under my headset without any pressure or pain under my headset.

Excellent video. Yet, there seems to be some confusion as to whether or not real life pilots do wear aviator sunglasses (Randolph seem to be very popular as do Ray Ban) but the thing is these do not cover your sides at all, they don't wrap around your face that much (if at all, really). Which sunglass models would you recommend, being a certified airline pilot? I am talking about specific brands and wraparound styles, if you could name a few i'd be greatly appreciative. P.S. by the by, what Ray Ban model are you wearing?

I have prescription Oakley Aviator frames, progressive lenses, transition lenses, non-polarized. Q: Have you heard of a non-polarized clip-on sunglass that would fit onto the frame, in a particular color - eg grey?

Many of the high quality lenses that are red or blue on the outside actually have a grey or brown lens. The red or blue are mirrored to minimize reflections.

Hi Captain. Thanks for the video. Now I know what kind of sunglasses to get. I have a question unrelated to sun glasses. How far away does a plane have to be from an erupting volcano to not be affected by volcanic ash in the engines?

I wear Randolph's and really like the lack of optical and colour distortion. Wear sunglasses whenever flying in day time. I didn't and ended up requiring cataract surgery in my late 50's. Protect those eyes!

Can you do a video on cross winds. Just saw a video of a very scary landing in Germany.

Any experience with the Method Seven Sky lens sunglasses? I’m very intrigued but on the fence about the blue tint. If you’re looking at pure IMC conditions up ahead with no contrast between sky and cloud, how can you tell that you’re not heading directly into solid cloud? It would all be tinted blue. I’ve experienced similar issues with yellow lenses in IMC conditions where the tint, while good in some ways, prevented me from properly identifying flying directly onto IFR conditions until it was almost too late. Cool points, Petter... curious ... I notice you wear an Apple Watch in this vid. I'm a watch guy (and not a pilot although I did almost get my glider wings as a kid, long story)... but there is a whole genre of 'pilot watches' out there. I know they used to serve an important purpose in the old days but modern tech has likely rendered 'pilot watches' more of a luxury item. That said, what do you see most pilots wearing on their wrists?

I work with pilots at my local airport and they all wear a variety of watches. I’ve seen Garmins, Apple Watches, Breitlings, Seikos, Invictas, G-shocks, and just generic cheap ones. I personally wear an Apple Watch, as you can download a lot of useful aviation apps and have your METAR and TAF reports on your wrist. The stereotype of the big “pilot watches” is fading, most pilots are just trying to make ends meet and those types of watches are out of their budget anyway. Hope this helps!

What model Ray-Bans are you wearing? They look nice.

What about Transitional glasses like I have? I do not even notice they have darkened until I go back inside and it is dark inside the house with the lights on. xD

Mentour pilot and captain joe have cleared many things about flights.

I suggest American Optical sunglasses. They were chosen and still being used by the U.S. Air Force, the Israeli Air Force and even NASA for the Apollo moon mission. Very high quality and quite affordable for around 60$.

I love my AO Original pilot glasses with the tan lenses (gives you better depth perception and contrast) and bayonet temples (super comfy under the headset and easy). And as mentioned above they`re like a tank, very durable. I ordered them from their website for 80 bucks shipping included... you can`t beat that.

There is no special pitch for taking off but I would petty much say 10-14 is very often seen on takeoff. This depends on the GW of the aircraft and the speed of the aircraft. Greater speed-Greater pitch. But pilots follow the Flight Director when VNAV is activated. The vertical speed depends also on the Gross Weight,Indicated speed,wind...But it is usually above 2000ft/m. Also,when derate is used,effects the take off performance.

Nothing like the Serengeti glasses for flying, bar none.

What about transition lenses?

I spent most of my life in optical labs making eyeglasses. The truth is that you don't get what you pay for. Big names like Oakley, Bolle, etc are still made in shops in China or somewhere.Mediocre quality at best. German, French and Japanese tend to make better quality glasses. Ray Ban- ok, but again they might just be made in China. Which is not necessarily a bad thing - they will work to whatever quality you desire but most company want something really cheap. As for fashion names like Maui Jim, Versace and stuff like that - forget it, unless you like throwing money away. Even if they are decent, you're paying way too much. Standard lenses can be ok or complete crap. Your best bet is to find a frame that fits you well and is sturdily made and get a reputable optometrist to make lenses for them. Get High index plastic (CR39 is probably best from an optical point if view but polycarbonate lenses are indestructible), high quality anti-reflection coatings, UV coating and possibly a scratch resistant coat. Even if you boast about your 20/20 vision you can benefit from prescription lenses. 20/20 does not mean as good as it gets and I'd say 95% of people can benefit from fine tuning their vision. Hey, nobody will know they are prescription! As for tint color, I prefer amber over grey because I feel it gives better contrast, but it's a personal choice.

HERE'S A THOUGHT: How about those "flip-down" sunglasses that clip onto regular eyeglasses, and can be flipped down when needed, and raised when not needed? It seems they (at least for pilots and any one else who use prescription eyeglasses) would be far cheaper, as well as more convienant than a pair of prescription sunglasses, and having to take them on and off all the time.

Thinking the same thing. Also my wife once had frames that came with its own "clip on" set of sunglasses. They used magnets. I use ones that clip on but don't flip up.

what is the absolute authority of a captain? in relation to crew, passengers , ATC, territory, international law etc.?

crew is expected to correct the captain and speak up in case of serious questions, especially the FO. to passengers he is absolute no authority over ATC or local law

@@czondag - BA 5390 had tried with less cockpit screens and a free seat for the pilot outside the cockpit. The emergency landing turned out to be more expensive than the wrong bolts!

How about wearing eye lenses and regular glasses on top in case of eye correction?

Get Serengeti sunglasses, the have the best glass quality and are made of glass lens instead of plastic and will last for years. Plastic lenses will scratch easily. Consider Persol sunglasses as well.

Polarized lenses, motorcycle helmet Wild experience until you adapt and learn the way thing look.

Surely a high quality neutral grey wrap around lens from someone like Maui Jim.

Buy the $4 aviator knockoffs on Amazon. Obv.

Gradient lenses seem to never be polarized, so it seems if you see those it almost definitely isn’t polarized. It also seems that how easy a lens is to polarize well is the biggest difference between plastic and glass lenses. On most plastic lenses, the polarizer isn’t quite even, if you hold them up to a computer monitor and rotate them you can see it. Glass still has the better scratch resistance. Edit, several years later, It seems Randolph is now making a polarized gradient lens, their "Northern Lights" lens comes in polarized, and it's a gradient brown lens with a blue mirror SO it's not something to rely on.

I recently purchased a pair from flyingeyesoptics.com/ for VFR flying and am super satisfied with it! I believe this was a kickstarter project originally and the founder is a pilot himself who got fed up with other glasses and started to make his own specifically for aviation purposes (non-polarized, thin temples etc)

Pilots don't need glare protection because everything that is a big issue is already protected, and there's no road to glare at you.

Long live RayBans.

@Mentour: I didn't read all the way down in the comments, but what about the glasses that automatically change from light to dark? I know they are considered polarized, and polarized sunglasses are to be avoided. Do the regular glasses that change have the same restrictions? I was curious as I have a pair, and I've never seen them distort anything when they change. Personally I prefer them to full sunglasses actually .

That won't affect screens and the like but it is common passing through clouds to go from very bright to dark and even sometimes back again in a short period of time. Most of these darkness changing glasses do so slowly and this may result in you having glasses too dark or bright for a given condition. Better to get a medium to medium-dark lens and that will cover most light conditions.

I think there's something else to consider as well: do they even work in a cockpit? Most types of these so-called photochromic lenses react to the amount of UV-light that hits them, and I know in some cases they don't work behind windows, if the window-glass happens to block all UV-light. And I guess the cockpit windows are not your everyday glass, and will probably block at least a large part of UV-light (which is needed, UV-radiation is a lot stronger at altitude). Maybe it's just "a large part" and they work fine, but I wouldn't count on it.

If we're being technical, the USAF didn't come into existence until 1947. It was the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) before that.
