I am reading the crime is high in Whangarei. Is it really that bad? I am from the US and I have a choice between Whangarei and Tauranga.

I live in Auckland. I used to live in Tauranga. You are right. Not much job there. Accomodation is cheap tho. If you want to get jobs easily, Auckland is better for you. Although rent issues more expensive, you will always get jobs easily.
I live in Tauranga and if you do go there definitely go to the beach
