I would love to speak fluent German. German isn't an angry language, but rather a beautiful language that deserves admiration.

Hello ! Languages are really interesting. My mother tongue is Kurdish. I studied Arabic-English translation at Damascus University in Syria. Now I am in Deutschland and I am hearing wonderful melodious sounds such as " Eine schöne Blume " . All words end with "e". They are like music to my ears. How beautiful these sounds are like a rhythm ! I want to speak German fluently. I want to learn all sounds of letters in German language in order to construct my own melodies.

German isn't a romantic language, its actually kinda on the rough side if things, if you want a language that sounds nice then learn French, Spanish , Japanese, polish, Arabic ...etc. But I too I'm trying to learn it since I want to study there and I don't like going somewhere and not being able to blend in. If you're not enrolled in a language course then I suggest you look at babbel.com and Duolingo, as well as fiftylanguages.com . hope that helps :)

***** I was actually referring to the actual category called "Romantic languages" the group that German belongs to is called synthetic languages I think, I don't know why they're called that though. I'm not saying German can't be poetic, I'm actually not that good at it yet to be able to tell for sure, but I've studied polish and Japanese a little bit in the past, and my first impressions on German (I'm an A2 level More or less) is that its a bit rougher than the others i mentioned. Aber sie ist auf jeden falls eine schöne Sprache , ich liebe deutsch :)

When I visited Berlin, I always made an effort to try to talk to people in German. They could tell straight away that I was English, though, so they always spoke back to me in English. Some people tutted at me when they discovered I was foreign but on the whole people in Berlin are generally accommodating to foreigners, similar to London.

If I could learn a language perfectly overnight, it'd be Swabian (it's technically a dialect, but I think still applies to the question), as I hope to live in Baden-Württemberg one day. Stuttgart was the first European city I ever visited and I fell in love with it the moment I stepped off of the tour bus. Since I live in Canada, we're taught English and French in school, so I'm fluent in those two languages, as well as Cantonese and Mandarin, which I've picked up from family and friends. I've also self-taught myself German, so I would consider that to be my fifth language. I've been trying to learn Swabian for a few months, but there are precious few resources online and I've been bogged up by school as well. I love the rhythm and eccentricity of Swabian, and I'd like to be able to communicate with the locals in their own dialect. Swabian has so many traditional sayings and has become one of the most popular German dialects (I'm assuming it's partially due to that "Wir können alles - Außer Hochdeutsch" media campaign), and I would really like it to get some more attention. I think learning Swabian would make me feel more at home and accepted should I really end up living in that region. Thank you for providing such educational videos to the language learning community, and especially for including Swabian in this episode! Needless to say, I was overjoyed :D

Hello, Goddag, Guten Tag: I'm a huge fan of languages. My mother tongue is Danish - and in my spare time, I study English, Finnish, French, Greek, Dutch, Italian, Luxembourgish, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, German and Welsh. Of the languages I study, I study English and French at school, and I once took a year with Spanish. Otherwise, I learn those languages by myself using books, CD's and videos (to achieve the correct pronunciation). I chose Spanish, Portuguese and Italian due to the similarities to the French grammar and vocabulary. I chose German just because the major part of my family speaks it guite well (without it being their mother tongue). I chose Luxembourgish because of some family I've got in Luxembourg and because it's a lot like German. I chose Polish and Russian because I wanted to learn languages without definite and indefinite articles. I chose Dutch because my French teacher constantly said that it would be easy for Danes to learn, so I was willing to make an efford. Futhermore, I decided to learn Finnish because I was looking for another gender neutral language than English - and finally Welsh. Literally, I started to learn the Welsh language because I found a Welsh town name cinsisting of 58 letters "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysisiogogogoch". I practise all the languages minimum 1 hour and a half every week.

I would like to wake up speaking fluent Latvian... I love the popular music and I enjoyed visiting the country. I have learned many languages but I am much older now so it is harder to learn totally new languages due to time and work and just being so much busier in general (Latvian is unlike any language I have ever learned or spoken). So it would be great if I could suddenly speak it. But it is always more satisfying to speak a new language through effort and experience!

  • @eagletmars

Patrick Bertlein I think you have a valid point. Generalizations help noone. In fact, they are what have helped, throughout history, spread xenophobia. I also think internalization is something that many people go through when guilt is involved. I think, in many respects, it is a sign of humility and respect to have, in Spanish we say, "pena ajena." Although there is not direct English translation it roughly means to be embarrassed for someone else. It takes character to not look way from past mistakes, and feel those emotions that are indeed traumatic. It is much easier to ignore, and even celebrate mass genocides like the ones that took place in the Americas at the hands of Spanish colonizers that are masked as simply victories. Many Americans don't bother to look back, or learn what really took place. Not all of course, but many. I think it is important to learn from history, and build from it. You're literally not alone for thinking about the past, and feeling strongly. Hang in there

Hello Hiba, if you´re interested in learning German in a very effective way and as easy (Yes!) as possible then check out the "Michel Thomas " method for language learning. Amazing stuff! I´m a German learning Russian with this approach and so I can vouch for its efficiency. There is a course (on CD and a booklet) for English speakers who want to learn German, just look for it on Amazon and make sure you get the whole course.. here´s a link if you are interested. Please understand that I only want to share my enthusiasm about a really great approach of learning! www.amazon.com/Total-German-Michel-Thomas-Method/dp/144413308X Michel Thomas was a famous linguist who taught a lot of actors and businessmen in the US to speak foreign languages.. Give it a try, I think you will be amazed how easy things can become. There is always some effort involved in learning a language, but it needn´t be a struggle and can be an enjoyable experience. Best wishes and kind regards from Germany

I started learning German at the university and it's become a challenge for me, however it has finally become the best decision I've ever made. I'd like to add that when you learn a language, you don't only learn the grammar. You also learn the culture which involves the language.
