    There is a HUGE difference when it comes to temperament between Columbian and Argentine tegus. Columbian tegus have more of a monitor lizard attitude, where as many Argentine tegus are very social and actively seek out their owners attention and affection, almost to the level a cat will greet it's owner when he comes home. You will definitely get a much more interactive experience with a Argentine

    My first large lizard was a wild caught adult male Colombian Tegu. After struggling with him for one day he was puppy tame ever after. Well, except for the SECOND time I took him outdoors, when he repeatedly charged me (I just lifted him off the ground by his harness, but, then, he tried to roll himself up the leash to get at my hand, so I took him inside, whereupon he calmed back down within minutes). I guess he remembered that, after the first time I took him outside, I took him back inside. I never did take him outdoors on a leash again. Otherwise, though, he enjoyed being held and would seek me out if he needed anything. My friend had a female Colombian from the same shipment that was just as dog tame, but, again, the second time he took her outdoors on a leash one night, she became spastic and escaped. Both were "Golden Tegus". About a year later I acquired a female Golden Tegu but she remained pretty aggressive, though, admittedly, I had only got her to try and breed with my male and didn't put a lot of effort into it. But I expected her to be just as easy as the others I'd known. I guess their temperament depends on the area they're from. Much more recently I got what was supposed to be an Argentine but it turned out to be a large Colombian of black and white coloration. He was grouchy and would always try to chase me out of the room as if I was a nuisance (guess I was, haha) but really wasn't overly aggressive. Sometimes, as with my Nile monitor, I enjoy a lizard with attitude.

    I just got my baby not too long ago and at first even he was a little weird to movement while being held he wasn’t as confident as now and it’s only been a FEW WEEKS so far. I can walk around and put him on my shoulder no issue and he just chills. Amazing animals. An Argentine btw lol

    You probably get this a lot, but THANK YOU for all the awesome tegu videos! Argentine b&w tegu has been my ultimate dream pet for a long time, but I won't get one for another couple years when I'll hopefully have the space & resources to build a massive enclosure, plus I want to learn as much about them as I can beforehand. Your videos are very informative & your tegu is just a big cutie patootie! A patootie with huge claws, but a cutie nonetheless :)

    Man more people need to talk about goldens, I have one thats about 4 now and he is a hekkin good boy. He's never aggressive, sometimes he can be grumpy but not to the point he would ever try to hurt you (if he really wants to be left alone he'll open his jaw a bit to say "hey - you know I can chomp ya with these things" but he never follows through with the threat). I usually hand feed him and he's incredibly gentle when grabbing the food and knows the difference between my fingers and food - I've felt his teeth brush past my finger tip on many occasions but he's just smart enough to know those aren't for eating lol. He did accidentally bite me once when I stupidly tried to give him a tiny piece of food with medicine on it, he held my finger for a second or two then let go on his own, no attempt to rip, tear, or death-roll. I'm thinking he knew that wasn't food, because I have seen him rip bigger pieces of food up by shaking it super fast, that wouldn't have been pretty lol. Point is, the only time he ever hurt me - which was completely unintentional on his part - was when I made a dumb mistake and gave him a piece of food so small he couldn't pin-point where it was. And he let go within ~2 seconds without trying to rip my finger off - something he doesn't do with actual food (he just keeps shaking it and man(?)handling it until he can hork it down) so I'm betting he was smart enough to know I'm his buddy, and to not hurt me. He is an absolute sweetheart and I wish more people knew how cool golden tegus could be, everyone told me I'd be getting a menace when I first adopted him. Jokes on them he's my best friend!

    I owned a male green iguana from when he was maybe a couple weeks to when he started growing quite a bit (3-4 feet long). Granted I probably had a really well tempered green iguana, but how would you compare a colombian tegu versus say a green iguana in terms of temperament?

  • @ProfessorHerp

    @ProfessorHerp

    Based on my experiences, green iguanas are some of worst temperament wise. I would say colombians are better on average.

    Columbians are great (a petstore near me has a huge one named Clifford who is very friendly), but I like the look and disposition of the Argentines better. Im having so much fun with mine she's spooky smart! Today she actually 'asked' to come out to go to the bathroom for the first time. She's been doing great with the potty training, but it's been us initiating it every day until today. We'll see if this becomes the norm. Pooping on the puppy pads is so much easier to clean up than in the enclosure!

    I have a Tupinambis cryptus, is very hard to tell them apart from the T. teguixin by the way, but working with him trying to socialize him is difficult because of his defensive nature and the fact that they are territorial...that said, he tolerates my hand in his tank and some petting, picking him up is still an issue he will fight me, though he does not bite anymore (he's learned by a rather unconventional method, that biting does him no good).Size was a big factor for me, just dont have half a room to dedicate to any pet...lol...He is now 26 inches long (15" at time of purchase). I cannot get him to eat any vegetables, loves chicken, eggs (chicken and finch) fish, we did some meatballs (raw ground beef, 80%lean) the other day...just to try, and he was all for them. I need to try those reptilinks you mentioned...I am all for finding him variety. He does burrow all the time, but does not brumate, he comes up from the ground nearly everyday...which is when I get in there and "play" with him. I think is less stressful for him if I do not just dig him out. But OMG, I absolutely adore him and I think is very rewarding being accepted by this lovely {if grumpy at times) truly smart creature.

    I think it also does need to be mentioned, that just because an animal in general might have certain qualities doesn't mean that there's not individualism within that group. A good example are my chihuahuas, my dog Henry is just as chill as can be really doesn't care, my dog George is the happiest little dog you'll ever meet loves to meet new people, and my dog Rico is a little demon! But he is adorably demonic lol. So just because black and white tegus might technically on average make better pets that's not true for every single one of them.

    No they will fight, general rule of thumb is only 1 lizard per enclosure unless they're male/female of the same species - but even then they will sometimes fight. Little lizards like anoles and house geckos can live with multiple in one enclosure but I wouldn't do that with anything larger.
