Last week I got to view a F-117 up close at the Museum of Aviation next to Robins AFB in Georgia. The leading and trailing edges of the wings were removed as well as various other parts including one of the bomb bay doors. It was also silver in bare metal skin. It was displayed outside for 3 weeks prior to being moved inside for a 1 year restoration. I asked a docent about the missing parts and he said they were removed along with the black paint because they are still have top secret classification. I asked why one bomb bay door was removed while the other remained and he didn't have an answer. Also since the shoot down over Serbia paint and other parts were readily available for analysis. It was smaller than I expected.

Actually find that kind of funny, back in 1992 I got to view an F-117 up and very close down at Alamogordo, the Air Force Base. My best friend from high school was stationed down there and literally was in charge the life-support systems on that aircraft. I was able to go on base and visit with him and he gave me kind of a tour. His Co of the Squadron he was in, took us both under his wing and took cash out on the flight line to one of the hangers where I got to go up and see the F-117 in person. In all honesty I didn't think it was that small, at least from my perspective which was no closer than 5 feet. But the one thing I really did think was cool being in a aircraft Hangar that was dimly lit it literally felt like it was sucking all the light into it almost like a black hole. And that was always my one big takeaway from that aircraft

There is an F-117 getting restored to be a museum piece for the SAC museum here in Nebraska (halfway between Omaha and Lincoln). The restoration hangar has a viewing window, and you can see that they're replacing half of the plane with wood bits, then painting it black with paint you get at Home Depot. I do know from some books I own that the paint is classified, and that the leading and trailing edges of the wings are made of dielectric plastic. Radar hits the wing leading edges, and absorbs into the plastic, turning the radio energy into heat. That means no radar ping echo will ever return back to the radar dish that made it. They also had to cover the gaps in the panels and plane with some kind of putty, making that the single most labor intensive part of the plane flight, which later got made better using some sort of speed-tape. It turns out the panel edges are where most of your reflected energy comes from, so you need to have a plane with no gaps.

they had great ideas implemented back then... e.g. the radar emitters on the MFD map along with the detection level indicator (maybe not realistic, but great for gameplay). Different ground radars required different flight path to delay detection (beaming for PD, but flying straight towards non-PD radars IIRC). Somehow the maps felt more crowded then some scenarios in DCS... you had radar stations, boats, aircraft on patrol. flying very slow and low (autopilot off since it's minimum height was relative high) could help a lot to sneak past enemy units. It was one of the sims that gave the impression there is a complete scneario. DCS missions feel like scripted missions: huge map, but to keep the FPS up most of the map is empty (in terms of units). Though this will maybe going to change now that we have MT.

@@slowhornet4802 precisely. Only problem I see was that while low and slow approach worked great, it did not result in a higher risk of engagement by an accidental nearby manpads/AA/optically guided SAMs as these were absent. In contrast, in LHX flying low was great for a stealthy run, but you could be also surprised by a Shilka, or just a dude with an AK/Igla as you got within their reach suddenly.

Heh, I flew with the 416th Squadron of the 37th TFW on opening night of Desert Storm. 1) It was NOT 'fun' and 2) The Nighthawk is a hard damned aircraft to fly. She earned the name of 'Wobblin Goblin' for good reason. The b*tch was as slow as molasses, running uphill, in winter (I only ever got her past 600 mph, (540 knots) in a dive)! Unstable and hard to keep in the air. Her rate of ascent was horrible, but her operational ceiling was decent. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, her stealth was amazing.......until you opened the bomb bay doors. After that, your radar cross section goes from 0.001 m2 to HEY! LOOK AT ME! SHOOT. RIGHT. HERE!! We also missed targets....a lot....like 40%. On the plus side we also flew right over downtown Baghdad on a regular basis without getting shot down, so there's that. I was never happier to leave an aircraft behind! Flew the Mudhen (F-15E) for many years after that. Anyway, carry on! Have a pleasant weekend, gentlemen and ladies.

Dear Cap, some advice regarding the feline foibles: Some cats don't respond to catnip (lack the heritable olfactory receptors for it) but do respond to valerian. A longer term solution could instead be to set up one or more Feliway diffusers (needs an available power socket) in your home. Feliway emulates the natural pheromones released by a mother cat to calm her kittens, reducing stress and comforting cats. It takes about a day to kick in but should calm down poor Pickles. Best of luck and see a vet if the stressed behaviour continues; it could also be health-related.

Real stealth operations, F-117 and B-2 infamously relied heavily on mission planning to maximize their advantage from stealth. Mostly because RCS is highly dependent on what direction the radar is looking from, which I don't think DCS handles at all. With the F-35, it has all the hardware to gather all the information itself and let the pilot do re-planning on the fly. This is fully eradicated when you put them in a tight course like this, not that a dcs mod will deal with that in the first place.

It's RCS (Radar Cross Section) is the equivalent, for a radar, to a metal marble. The less stealthy (and much cheaper) F-35, is equal to a metal golf ball. The F-35 stealthiness is a bit better than the B-2 bomber, which, in turn, was twice as good as that on the even older F-117. Much older aircraft, like the B-52, have a huge RCS, which makes them very easy to spot on radar. But with a smaller RCS, it's more likely that the aircraft won't be detected at all. [END QUOTE] - - - - - - - - However, once the F-35 was built, the advancements in stealth technology indicated it exceeded this value. [QUOTE] As of May 31 [2011], Griffiths said, the Edwards F-35s had flown a total of 2,513 test points against a plan of 1,995. As of that date, the F-35A was hitting all of its key performance parameters, and radar cross-section testing is exceeding specifications. [END QUOTE] - - - - - - - - As more data came in, it turns out the F-35 is stealthier than the F-22. This is from two United States Air Force Generals [QUOTE] The F-35’s cross section is much smaller than the F-22’s, but that does not mean, Hostage concedes, that the F-35 is necessarily superior to the F-22 when we go to war. [END QUOTE] [QUOTE] "I would say that General Hostage … is accurate in his statement about the simple stealthiness of the F-35 [with regard] to other airplanes," Bogdan said in the interview. The statement was accurate for radar cross section, as measured in decibels, and range of detectability, he said, and he scoffed at the notion that anyone can tell how stealthy an aircraft is just by looking at it. [END QUOTE] - - - - - - - - Later, the Chief of Low Observability for the B-2 bomber notes the F-35 borrows a lot of techniques from the bomber. In this interview they also noted the advancement that makes the F-35 so stealthy. The airframe itself is made of a stealth material, it's not just a coating. [QUOTE] On a radar map, a 747 would appear the size of a hot air balloon and an F-16 would look like a beach ball. Drill down to legacy stealth aircraft and Lockheed’s F-117 Nighthawk would show up as a golf ball while an F-22 Raptor might appear as a pea. With the F-35, Lockheed is getting down to pebble size, according to Robert Wallace, senior manager for F-35 flight operations. Wallace, a former chief of low-observability for the US Air Force’s B-2 bomber, says the F-35 has leveraged LO qualities from the bomber - but he could not elaborate on specifics. Pilots will see a more advanced low-observable signature on the F-35 versus the F-22, but it’s the maintainers who see the greatest leap in durability. [END QUOTE] - - - - - - - - Even pilots who migrate from the F-22 to the F-35 corroborate this information [QUOTE] During a flight debriefing, Col. Chris Niemi and Maj. Nash Vickers both said a comparison of the radar-absorbing F-35 to its nimble but less stealthy twin-engine F-22 cousin might not reveal the whole story. Niemi has eight years in the cockpit of an F-22 and is one of the few Air Force pilots who is qualified in both the Raptor and the F-35 Lightning II. He said he wanted to set the record straight on the Lightning II, once and for all. “Many have compared the F-22 to the F-35 but that comparison is unfair. With the F-35 Lightning, this fighter sees better, has more range, and is stealthier than any of its predecessors. This airplane, with its fly by wire technology, is super easy to fly and it has a very linear response.” [END QUOTE] - - - - - - - - So the F-35 is stealthier than legacy stealth platforms and there's several interviews and congress testimonies that highlight this fact. It's just people don't read those things. It's so interesting to me that the 2005 figure is the one that sticks and no one has bothered to read or watch the recent documentaries on this. If you want to read these sources in complete, you can find them here: www.reddit.com/r/Dragon029/comments/30fa43/f35_vs_f22_b2_stealth_claims/

It's not supposed to be though. I do see some figures supporting an RCS of 0.003 for the F-117, however the military has factually stated the F-35 has a lower RCS than the nighthawk and some figures in papers put out by the Navy have stated 0.0015 for the F-35, which according to them, is comparable to the B-2, which is supposed to have half the RCS of the F-117. The F-22 is supposed to be the king of frontal RCS with 0.0001-0.0002.

I have one thing to say about your little experiment, you were wrong about the f--117, when on a mission it does not fly at 5000 feet or higher, they fly just above the trees, they use terrain following radar until they get to the area where the attack commences. The bottom of the F-117 is flat which is ideal to get a radar return from. In reality, they would fly low and would never clime to 5000 feet or higher with the exception of avoiding terrain or getting ready to drop their ordinance. That being said I thought this was an interesting experiment.

Cap, the SA- designations for Soviet/Russian missiles are NATO reporting names. The S designations are Soviet/Russian names. For instance, the SA-2 Guideline is what NATO calls the missile used in the Soviet/Russian S-75 system. The NATO reporting name SA-6 Gainful missile is actually the 2K12 system. The S-300, S-350, and S-400 systems use different, newer radars and missiles.

I remember when I was eight I want to the MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa Florida which I live in St Petersburg Florida which is 8 Miles but we got to see the F-117 and the B-2 stealth bomber it was on display and when you watched it land and days before when they were doing test runs just to go over like the cities and stuff people were calling in to the police station saying there's these weird black planes going over the sky followed by f-16s and F-18 depending on which day they're just doing exercises they're actually doing from what I was told and always a little bit older when they did that they were doing a simulation of radar we have three airports in the area they couldn't spot them at all they could always see on the radar the f-16s. The F-117 my solid do its flybys it was only a 20-minute show wasn't that much I've been lucky enough to go to over the years 30 airshow so 30 years I saw the Harrier jet take off right in front of me I wish I could give cap some of my pictures like of my dad next to the F-15 the F-16 before they modified them this was like a 95 and I was actually there when they did the F-22 Raptor when I was older I saw that thing maneuver I said that things never going to get shot down or it would be completely hard to do it I even said to myself the F-16 is not irrelevant anymore it will not be the dominant dogfighter anymore. It'll be nice if I could see some of the gr guys come here to America with cap and everybody come to the airshow here cuz we have like over 400,000 people that come for 2 days out of the weekend Saturday and Sunday that's how big the Sarah shows they have every plane you can imagine If I Was A Millionaire I would send cap his babies his wife everybody from GR team I wish there was a way to voice chat and talk to him or to the rest of everybody also I just wanted to say thank you for these videos over the years they've got me through some really hard times in my life.

I think electronic counter measures are probably under valued in DCS’s calculations (I won’t call them modelling!) The British were asked to (virtually) bomb the US to test their “impenetrable” coast to coast early warning RADAR system. The British managed to fly at least five Vulcans into US airspace straight to strategic military airports and land them - only notifying air traffic control at final approach! This happened twice in the 1960s several years apart - due to the humiliation, the Brits were never invited back for a third attempt! That said, real time DSP has totally revolutionised RADAR performance. Type 45 destroyer can track any stealth aircraft at the maximum range dictated by the curvature of the earth (about 350 miles if you can get an aircraft up to 60,000 ft) The cost to benefit ratio of "stealth" aircraft - particularly the cost to operate and upgrade them is off the chart. By all means reduce RCS but anything above that is just burning money - technology (in the west) has moved beyond small RCS being an issue to RADAR, the money should be spent on longer range better weapons delivered by cheap, replaceable pilotless aircraft. F-35 would have been a magnificent thing to have in 1980 or 1990 - it's now pointlessly expensive and sophisticated. We've got the same issues in air defence - firing one million dollar missiles that take up to a year to manufacture to knock down a three thousand dollar drone that can be churned out by the thousand. A pilot is just as likely to find himself in enemy territory from a F-35 breaking down mid-mission as being shot down in a 4th gen fighter - I'd rather be in something reliable like a Typhoon or F-16 fitted with a decent ECM system. The old fashioned VHF antenna’s on the Chinese destroyers for detection of long-range stealth aircraft show they are a generation or two behind the west - but I’m sure they’ll soon steal enough tech to catch up.

I am assuming the Russian sams use the flight characteristics of planes compared to birds to decide to shoot. It seems to me that equipping stealth planes with a way to generate instability into the radar profile would counterman this somewhat, like making the radar think it's flapping wings. Of course, the speed would be hard to mask. Maybe if the planes created multiple signatures that would also help.

Going supersonic would really screw with its handling characteristics plus I'm not sure the airframe could handle those kinds of loads. Plus there's the issue of transonic drag which is why so many supersonic craft from the 1950s and 1960s have the "coke bottle" fuselage to assist in shedding said drag.
