I was running brushed and loved it but I spend an absurd amount of time in mud and water (I live in North West Iowa) I blew up 5 Brushed motors in 6 months. Decided to bite the bullet and spend $200 on a Hobbywing 540 2300 AXE system. 3 years later that same AXE is just as good as the day I bought it. So at the rate I was spending on brushed motors it has already paid for itself repeatedly. That is also something people should think about when choosing systems :D

Great point! I don't get into that much mud and muck. Water - yes, but it doesn't load the system down as much as mud does. I also wonder between this Fusion and the AXE - perhaps the AXE really is worth the extra $40-50?

@@RoadsideRC the AXE systems are heavy, specially the 550 can motors. i had both v1 (540) and v2 (550) axe systems and sold them all last year and went back to brushed systems. Run the 1080 + HH Crawlmaster Pro 10T 550 (TRX4 custom build) and a 1080 with a Crawlmaster Sport 12T (VS410 Origin custom build) and enjoyed the setup more than axe foc. The 1080 + Crawlmasters felt more responsive but a month or two ago decided to try out the new Castle Copperhead 10 and coupled it with a HH Revolver 2500kv... driving does not feel diffferent at all but i can really feel more power. I am never going back to uisng axe systems.

You can't beat the Axe. I love HW systems. I have three Fusions and one Axe 3300Kv, nothing better. Just picked up a Castle Mamba X with a Slate 3800kv system to compare it to the Axe.

Troy, thank you very much! I've been looking at the fusion for quite some time now but never pulled the trigger mainly because 1) stock still works fine 2) Fusion is almost 180 euros around here... So you might have just cleared my mind! I'll go for a 1080 and some other motor, simple as that!

Great video comparison. Would be interesting to gear up the Fusion as much as you can while still keeping similar low end resolution and then compare them again. That could be where you will see the difference. Just my 2 cents.

Great suggestion! I certainly want to put a bigger gear in it anyway. It feels like it is just down a small amount of wheelspeed vs where it was before....and I want that back!

I have 2 of the fusions will probably get a 3rd love them so smooth at low speed excellent for tricky spots and steep climbs

Great video. I'm outfitting my first crawler after 35 years in RC and I've been struggling with brushed/brushless. Bit the bullet and went brushed this morning. But I think I'll build a full on comp rig later this year w/4ws, that one will probably be brushless just for the tunability. We'll see.

I haven't delved into crawling yet as I'm on a budget but this was as great informative video. I just installed a hobbywing max10 combo on my granite and wow, two days in and I'm beyond impressed with the brushless swap. If you could do a video on pinion gear swaps/science/reasoning behind different sized pinions for bashing that would be awesome.

Thanks for the feedback! Gearing is rather easy: - the bigger the pinion (gear on the motor), the faster you will go. Downside is you will also create more strain and heat within the electronics. - If you are going to be driving mostly in rough terrain, keep the pinion size smaller. If you are going to be on a smooth surface, you can get a bigger one to go faster. Honestly, the stock gearing sounds like it is doing great for you - so don't stress over it too much. Just keep your eye on how hot your motor and ESC are getting while running. If you can't touch it - that is too hot! If you can touch it for about 1 second - that is about right. When in doubt - "Gear down, volt up". This means if you are concerned about temperature - put a smaller pinion on it, and step up from a 2S -> 3S battery. As an example.

@@RoadsideRC gotcha, I went from a 14t to a 23t pinion and yeah, it rips but motor does get a little warm (not excessive but warm). I think I'll try a mid range between the two and see what happens. It's almost uncontrollable with the 23 and a 3s lipo. I'm going to have to add a wheelie bar and wing mount to keep from destroying the back of the truck I think.

Pretty sure you can't bind a dumborc receiver to a Traxxas remote - you need to keep it Traxxas->Traxxas or Dumbo->Dumbo.

I literally just did this exact same swap. Same rig (TRX4 Sport), same old combo (1080/HH Trailmaster Sport), same new setup (HobbyWing Fusion. Haven’t done any real testing with the new setup yet, but just from preliminary testing, I’m very much in love with the Fusion! Love the super low speed control and the smoothness. I haven’t really played around with the settings much more than you did, and I’m pretty happy with it as is. One thing I feel like you missed in your comparison though… run time. I can’t speak on the fusion itself, but brushless is far more efficient from my experience. In my VS410, I run a Castle Copperhead/Slate 2850 combo. Last time out at Buddha’s, I ran for nearly 2 hours on a 2200mah 3s, and had 35% remaining. 3600mah 3s in my TF2 LWB (trucks weigh close to the same, both setup for C1) had 12% remaining after running the same course/similar time. I know it’s not a direct comparison, but I feel like the brushless combo will do much better on run time.

Thanks for the feedback! I agree for sure that brushless should be more efficient. Honestly though, it rarely is an issue for me based on how long batteries last in crawlers anyway. Especially since I typically run larger batteries. Do you still have the RPM matching on? I have continued to use this in this truck, and actually just turned it off as I really didn't like the "cruise control" feel.

Cool setup. I think Hobbywing gives great performance for the price. The name is kind of funky but they make good stuff. I don't know much about crawlers but this one is awesome because it has some power and speed. Love how you set up your crawler track. It's absolutely perfect. 👍👍

I didnt really notice the difference between my holmes hobbies 550 crawlmaster/hobbywing 1080 and my 1800kv fusion until I actually got great tires. I never realized how much difference the tires actually make. I always figured it wouldn't be that noticeable. This setup was on my enduro kit build. I first had on the 1.9 general grabbers on ssd beadlocks. Very capable. Tried a few amazon tires and actually wasnt too bad. I too thought the 150 price tag wasnt worth it until i put on a set of Proline KM3 predator compound on the SSD. My brushed setup became great but then my brushless setup became perfect. But, like i have read in the comments already, It really all depends on what you're looking for and the complete truck setup. Once my rig got heavy, 9lbs from brass upgrades, brushed just wasnt cutting it. Now my other enduro kit build i have its built just for the trail and i LOVE my brushed setup over brushelss for trail running! But when it comes to a comp or just serious crawling, my km3 brushless rig is my go to! Great vid!

Looking at your review and some of the others I have seen it isn't worth the price for a trail truck. My trucks can't take 550s so I use Holmes 35T 540s and a 1080 esc. Does the job and doesn't break the bank. Hopefully I will get to meet you at Bubba's some day soon. Love your videos.

Thanks for asking! The brushless has a place - especially in super wet and muddy....but otherwise I would rather still run the HW 1080 and the 21T. I have geared up the motor once to get extra wheelspeed...and it still isn't what I want. Need to gear it up more still.

@@RoadsideRC I feel the same. I have brushless in some of my scalers and crawlers. Mostly because of mud and wet conditions. But also still use the Hobbywing 1080 with Holmes Hobbies Crawlmaster Sport or Trialmaster Sport motors most of my RC.

100% worth it to brushless in a basher. The brushed motors don't live long in a basher.

I run both depends on what type of diving the driver needs and have bought both but I think for the average rc guy who just wants to keep it simple and economical brushed is the way to go .there are as many options with those also but personally I prefer brushed to

Loved it.. I have a RGT EX86100 stock 20T brushed motor and esc 40A, Almost buy a brushless 9T due for less heat and longer life span but no torque then after watching this video. I will bought HW 1080 goes with my stock 20T brushed motor and a upgrade 9imod 35kg servo and a set of Louise champ tires. It will have perfect balance for speed and torque.

You can definitely get a decent brushed system for much less money and enjoy the hobby just as much, but for me the Fusion is worth it. Its the low down control that sets it apart, turning the wheels so slowly that each block of tread gets a chance to bite and make the climb. On a brushed system it's harder to modulate it that slowly, but I suppose that could make it more rewarding when you do. In my Defender I'm sticking with brushed as it's too heavy for proper crawling. My Trx4 Sport and Trx4 G500 are excellent crawlers and they both have fusion.

I’m totally with you on the 1080. I run 4 of them with Holmes Crawlmaster Expert 16 turn motors so I’m roughly at $100 for those combos, but now with the new Fusion SE 1800kv motor for $80 it’s hard not to say no. I’ve put one of the new SE motors in my 6x6 and so far I’m pretty impressed.

@@RoadsideRC I’m definitely keeping those 1080s in the other truck because they run great and the tuneability with that program card make them my most favorite brushed esc. The one thing that bugs me with the Fusion and this is not against them at all is that they won’t fit in the Vanquish VFD transmission. I’ve seen guys remove the rear cover and dremel some material off the plastics but I’m pretty that cover is there for a reason. I have a HH Puller Pro V2 3500kv sitting on my table waiting to go in when I get some money for a new ESC. I’m running the Fusion Pro 2300 at the moment.

So this motor is a bit weird at first when it comes to set up on the trx4 and it has something to do woth the motor being reversed. I installed it on my Ford bronco but I had to reverse program it and then calibrate it. At that point the motor thinks it's in reverse so you have to set up the reverse level to 100% with your card and now you have full power forward. I tried it like that and the motor actually goes insanely fast. Close to basher speed.

Brushless lol I love my mamba x crawler combo with the slate 1408 2280kv motor on my trx4 i got it for a super good deal 150 for the combo I never tried the hobbywing system next to the axe in the gen8 my buddy has but at the same time I have my gen7 based crawler with a holmes crawlmaster and 1080 esc different trucks all together tho. Yeah - I really do wonder what differences there would be with the AXE system. Your Mamba + slate is not waterproof though, right?

Just a few things, when it comes to aftermarket parts on our rc's it only matters what you think about YOUR stuff. There are no wrong answers in my opinion (unless we are mixing and matching stuff that doesn't go together). I hate when rc snobs insist that they have "the best" or that their rig is way better than "so and so". I put a fusion in both my trx4 and my trx6 and have been loving it so far. My sport has the stock spur and pinion and I was uneasy about how slow it was on 2s. 3s fixed it though lol. The trx6 has stock spur and pinion as well but it is pretty quick regardless. I love the programming card, longer run times etc. I'm not experienced with the hobbywing 1080 so I can't say much comparison wise, other than the OBVIOUS reasons to go brushless.

Gotcha. Yes. You don't need them to solder the wires on.

I think the biggest benefits of brushless are more refined control, and for guys like me that only run 5,200+mAh batteries because the better efficiency can give you the same run time with a battery half of it's size. I have an Axe R2 3,300kv in my TRX6 and an HH 27T with a HW 1080 ESC. Both really wake up the rigs. It helps beginners to run brushless because you can set the throttle trim for "cruise control" and all they have to do is steer.

That all makes sense. I do love the efficiency of brushless...but honestly, I rarely kill the batteries in my crawlers anyway.

Would like to see battery life comparison also on them, you should get much long runtimes with the brushless. Not that it matters to most folks who run large batteries but, most of my crawler batteries are 1500mah or smaller, usually 850 so longer time between changes is nice when on the trails.

Fusion should come in today. I mostly want smoother throttle, quite, and longer runtime(1400mah 3s batteries) in my trx4. Based on what you said also ordered a larger pinion set. (Middle TN rock crawler group)

I'm coming across this video almost a year and half after it was posted. Has your opinion chanced since posting this? At this time you cant even order a HH TM21T 550, they're sold out. How about running through water semi frequently, would that change your opinon?

Hi David! Great question - thanks for asking. Short answer: my thoughts are still the same. Long answer: I have since run these brushed setups through every condition you can imagine. Water, mud, everything. The brushless is nice when it comes to thick mud. The extra power and the fully sealed can really help there. However, for just regular water (stream, river, creek, etc), the brushed motors are 100% fine. They lasted with no issues. Heck - it helped clean them I guess. Bottom line. Brushless is for mud and for those with disposable income. Brushed is for everything else.

What is interesting about that, it Holmes Hobbies does not recommend it. I specifically broke in my brushed motors following the guidance from their website.

I'm a hobbywing fan and say unless you have a truck for realism first it isn't worth it. But hobbywing have everyone else sorted with their amazing 1080. Maybe non realistic comp trucks would benefit from the super slow smooth creep of the hobbywing whilst in precarious positions, where less smooth set ups would make them leave the section or topple. Thanks! This is the TRX4 Sport - it is a single-speed transmission. For my general use, the Fusion has not proven itself to me. The HW1080 + Holmes Hobbies motor is still just as good of a combo in my mind. The real advantage I believe comes in full mud - that tends to be where I kill brushed motors and the Fusion just pulls through.

The fusion se, just released recently and for 70 bucks it’s a major competitor for brushed systems, that’s an incredible price

This is where I am so torn right now. I have a Gen 8 11.2 lbs and stock electronics. Was gonna go with a 1080 and HH trailmaster 21t, but the fusion is almost the same price! I run in a lot of water so should I get the brushless?

I already have 2 fusions instead on my Wraith and TRX4 sport and love it!

@@RoadsideRC 1800kv on both. I didn't know hobbywing quickrun fusion has 2300kv? 🤔 I believe it comes with two options of 1200 & 1800kv.

@@RoadsideRC that brushless should last 3x longer and batteries should last longer also or that s what the experts say. I would be curious if you had 2 identical cars with the brushless system in one and the brushed in the other and 2 identical batteries and see which battery lasts longer.

Troy, I'm a simple man. I use the 1080 and a HH crawl master sport 12t. I did not see enough benefit in the video that would make me spend the hard earned money, unless it was obvious. the crawl master lineup has a better drag brake and smoother low speed starts...lovin it.

I'm with you on the brushed setup. For more than double the price, you should expect a significant performance boost. The trail master sport and 1080 is a perfect combo for the price. Thanks for the honest comparison.

Honestly for comps and technical rock crawling fusion or axe system is good. But for pure driving for fun, trail crawling brushed is my choice. Its like driving automatic or manual car

I have the 1080 matched with a Crawlmaster sport 550 10T in a TRX4 79 Bronco, I also have a Sport with 2 speed trans and 1800kv Fusion. Both have really good low speed control, fusion is slightly smoother at really slow speed. Both have decent punch, but it feels like the fusion flat lines quick, Crawlmaster has a better top speed. Where I see the biggest difference is slow down hill descents, 1080 doesn’t have active drag brake, if it did it would be a different story. But the fusion has so much better slow down hill control. I’ve been playing around with the ISDT 70esc, yes it has its quirks with the Bluetooth but if you get past all that the active drag brake once tuned seems to be what the 1080 is missing. I haven’t put the 70esc in either of the trx4s yet, been playing with it in another rig (wraith with Capra axles) but I’m about to swap the 1080 out for the 70esc just to see a true comparison. As far as “is it really worth the 150 price tag” I don’t thinks so either.. especially seeing the 70esc is only $25 and definitely not if HW puts active drag brake on the 1080 or their next generation of esc

Glad to hear this! I have a ISDT 70 sitting in a box, waiting to go head-to-head vs a 1080. I'll be curious if our results match up!

Basically the same. For 95% of what I do, the Hobbywing 1080 and the Holmes 21T motor does everything I need it to do at a great cost. The only time I real benefited from the brushless is super muddy, swampy - where a brushed motor I had sucked in the thick mud and stopped working. This brushless setup is sealed so it is more robust in that situation.

Once you get used to the FOC it's hard to go back to a brushed setup, it takes a few minutes for your brain to register the change. FOC becomes kind of a cheat, my buddies that I crawl with all were swearing by their HW 1080 ESCs with HH brushed motors. Once they saw the Fusion and my Axe system in action now all but one of them have made the jump to some form of HW system. Not to mention the battery life benefit. I can make it around 6-6.5 miles on one 3s 5000Mah Traxxas pack, assuming I'm not doing anything too crazy, with the Fusion. The Axe is about 1/4-1/2 of that. Still significantly longer than I've ever gotten out of a brushed setup.

Glad folks enjoy them! I have had this Fusion setup for a long time now, and still would recommend the 1080/HH combo to most folks. Maybe the axe would be different.

💝💝….your video, great presentation format. I can’t say I disagree with much of your comments ? Currently running a brushed motor in my Axial Capra and on the verge of upgrading to a 2 in 1 system. Is it worth ‘doing’ at a huge cost increase and small advantages apart from a running smooth better quality motor !! Keep up the good work and thanks. I’m in Plymoton Uk. LEN

I think if you got a hobbywing axe system your mind would change the fusion motor was really designed for like swirca bass competition rigs that's why the motor and ESC is all-in-one to save space keep weight down I have a gen 8 with the axe system in it the V1 system I also have a few brushed Crawlers I recently just bought a hobbywing 1080 ESC for my son's brushed crawler and the UPS man just dropped off the soldering iron to get it in today but there's a few other review videos on KZread of that Fusion motor and I'll be honest a lot of them didn't go so well I believe it was Francis from RC review if you're interested in checking it out

The new hobbywing V2 system aex is 80 amp speed controller where the V-1 is a 60 amp speed controller I haven't tried a V2 system yet I was recently going to order one and give my V1 system to my son but North America hobbywing does not have any in stock currently

well,. i just bought a fusion setup xD, i've installed it,. but haven't driven it yet :)

@@RoadsideRC yeah, i've seen some test video's about it, and it's pretty smooth, quiet and strong, and i went for the 1200kv version. i have two vaterra ascenders, one is with a brushed 55t motor, and i will put them head to head in a series of different tests :)

Idk about the pro but i just bought the fusion se and its way way good for the price at 75. Im not sure why you would even need the pro version the se is so good.

@@RoadsideRC its the long transfer shaft in the gearbox. It needs shimming so it doesnt slide along its axis. The ticking is the shaft sliding back and forth under load. The traxxas teflon shim should work.

I personally prefer 27t brushed motors over just about anything

first video that i see no difference between the 2 technologies. and first time too that tester man don't fill a BIG difference. your brushed combo is nice, i have 1080 too but no HH motor at this time. like you said, i prefer manage the throttle. if it's too easy, it will be boring.

I also find it odd that I have a different take than most folks. I think some of them are coming from stock electronics, not an already good quality brushed setup.

The Fusion is the BEST crawler motor on the market. It has perfect modulation, maintains a snail speed crawl over any obstacle, even when you engage the cruise control. It has a 200% drag brake, it is dead silent, saves space and eliminates wires from your rig. Every crawler guy I show it to has their mouth hanging open.

Thanks for asking! Same. I have run the Fusion, and also run the new Castle Mamba Micro X2. The Castle has A LOT more power in comparison - honestly, too much. It is soo hard to beat the Hobbywing 1080 and 21T Holmes motor.

its good for hard bodys due to space saving and for cages crawlers it looks soo clean i am doing a cage bauld xd gg

I could not stand the fusion. But I have run mostly outboard motors. Can't even come close to it. But still can beat a hand wound team brood motor.

Turns out, I 100% agree with you!

Brushless is far more powerful than brushed. With a larger pinion or taller gear ratio, the brushed motor will struggle much more. Brushed motors stall out much easier where the fusion combo has room to gear up without sacrificing punch. Brushed is good but brushless is far superior in every situation that I've come across. I'm a huge fan of the castle stuff and hobbywing fusion specifically. That's what I will be going to in my truck.

@@RoadsideRC I really like the fusion stem myself. Run a handful of the other systems on the market as well. So far hobbywing is the best bang for the buck. Another thing that comes to mind too, comparing an off the shelf motor to say a hand built Holmes or Brood motor, there is no comparison. So I guess there could be exceptions to that. Still, having little to no wear parts internally is appealing. Might be a good idea for a future video if you haven't already. The top of the line bushed vs brushless. There's definitely a reason brushed is still around in the crawler game.

So, two months later: what do you like better?

Great follow-up! Honestly, the brushed setup still does really well for me. The only time I would really suggest the brushless instead is if you will run in a lot of water and mud. Having some back from AxialFest - where it was ALL MUD, my brushed setups got full of mud and stopped working multiple times. The total sealed can of the brushless would really have helped out in that situation.

It's always entertaining to watch a comparison when the host already has a negative opinion towards one of the products right from the get go... I'm just new to crawling, but have yet to see a negative review on the fusion. Times change. So does technology.

I've been using a Fusion Pro 2300 for 3 months now. Glad I went this direction. Amazing control in all aspects. Has not skipped a beat once and the required torque is there on demand. Tried a few brushed, outrunner options, the programmability can't be matched with the Fusion. You can spend the extra on a high end esc and you'll end up with a heavier system at almost the same cost. Personal preference is always key. But I'm sold on Hobbywing now..

What do you think about this system now??😂

I honestly don’t think it’s worth the money between brushed and brushless. In a crawler brushed is the way to go in my opinion. The difference isn’t worth it to me.
