Which is better a dental bridge or implant?

There are several important differences between a dental bridge and implant while their function remains pretty much the same. Dental implants are far more long-lasting compared to bridges and are also preserve the condition of adjacent teeth unlike a dental bridge.

DA here and from my experience, both options have pros and cons. Bridges are better for posterior teeth as they perform better when grinding food than cutting into it. They are cheaper and with proper care can last minimum 30 years to a lifetime. Ideally a 3 or 4 unit bridge is all you need if you are missing teeth. If you need more than a 4 unit bridge then a partial denture is more likely to be the best choice, especially if the front teeth are the concern as they look more aesthetically pleasing. They are also cheap short term but any subsequent visits due to improper care or multiple replacement can add up. An implant can be used to replace any tooth that is missing anywhere in the mouth. They are obviously stronger, sturdier, and can withstand more bite force as they are screwed and anchored in the jaw bone. They are more expensive but in the long run can make up for it as they last for a lifetime. If your body rejects the post that is screwed, and feel symptoms within the following months then it is recommended to extract the post and consider a bridge or a denture (depending on how many teeth are missing). Obviously you have to do a lot of research and ask your dentist a lot of questions before making any decisions because both are expensive treatment. Additionally, assess yourself. Do you grind at night or during daytime? Do you have underlying health issues? Did you inherit any disease from your parents? Are you allergic from the common materials used in dentistry? All of these are important questions to guide you with choosing the right treatment.

there is a type of bridge that does not require grinding down healthy teeth each side of the replacement tooth, a Maryland Bridge is a porcelain tooth with a porcelain "wing" on the back that is bonded to the back of one the adjacent teeth, that process is non invasive, I have two teeth replaced in that way at the front of my mouth and it works perfectly, it is way cheaper than an implant, my dentist advised against an implant even though I was willing to pay the price , he said they were too problematic and prone to infection and gum disease, to be honest I would never have an implant to replace one or two individual teeth, a maryland bridge is the best option , it totally worked for me.

@@michelle-zd2nc I had it done here in the UK but any competent dentist would be able to offer a Maryland Bridge, it works well if you have one tooth missing and you have two good teeth either side of the gap, if you have a tooth missing from your front upper six teeth or even two teeth missing, as I have, then a Maryland bridge is a possibility, it is really a single tooth replacement method.

The reality is that both methods can have their drawbacks and complications. I would urge anybody considering either, to view a number of clips from different sources. This one is very biased towards implants. The key to success is to find a dentist who has a good track record and who will honestly spell out the pros and cons (and costs over time) of each solution option. Having said that, it probably isn't possible to be 100% certain that problems won't surface in the future even if you do have a good dentist. In that scenario though, a good dentist will still steer you right.

A tooth can be rebuilt similarly to the implant variant but using a stiff and resin instead much like a filling. It is especially reasonable if a tooth is broken not lost completely. Crowning is a bad idea because other teeth are harmed. Implants may have complications. Do I'd opt for the above described scenario.

I made one tooth partial denture of a lateral incisor of my friend 30 years back and he is still using it till today. And his younger brother is a dentist and my friend. All these years one can imagine an ordinary acrylic partial denture, did the job, Free of charge. And recently I made a similar tooth upper lateral incisor partial denture for my daughter, she had a peg shaped lateral incisor, which was mobile and came out naturally. I made the lateral incisor in ceramic and made an acrylic one tooth removable denture. And she is happy. As it looks natural, she is comfortable with it. If properly made ordinary acrylic partial denture can last more than 30 years. Or one can change every 10 years with minimum cost. Millions of bucks can be saved. But ?...

from my experience having a front bridge is really only cosmetic because you cant bite into an apple or eat spare ribs and if you could you risk breaking one of the teeth because it has been ground down and more then likely had a root canal. I got twenty years from mine and instead of having a two tooth gap from an accident it turned into four. If you loose your teeth from an accident and the health system covers dental costs insist on implants. Implants are more natural and doesnt require adjacent teeth being used as support posts which will fail in time and you end up with a bigger problem.

Respected dentists/BDSs this post of mine is for my mental health regarding dentistry. I got my lower left incisor tooth (single tooth) crowned just for cosmetic purposes. Although I requested it but I wasn't aware that crowning of tooth is an invasive procedure. It was half dicolored from the gum line & wasn't too visible either. It been more than 2.5 years since I got the crown by a dental technician. I am somewhat in remorse over my decision to get the tooth crowned as my tooth enamel was significantly drilled & just a peg tooth remained over which a pfm crown was fitted. Although there was pain sometimes in the first year but as of now there isn't any pain for quite a long time. Sometimes some questions do pop up in my mind that I shouldn't have done this. Also, can crown work well as we age & step in old age as I will need a crown for ever as no one likes gaps in their teeth. (I'm a male, 35 years age). Please help me cope with such unsettling thoughts.

There are many valid comments which should be taken seriously. This is indeed a biased presentation. I am a recently retired dentist, who has provided many bridges and implants for many years. Unlike some practitioners I don’t just wholesale recommend an implant in every case. The dentition and patient as a whole needs to be taken into consideration, and some future predictions ought to be made.... I call it crystal ball gazing!

but there is a risk to implants. All goes well if the surgery is succesful without issues. But the risks are that the dentist can make a mistake and drill too far, puncturing sinuses or damaging nerves.

I know someone who is missing one teeth and the dentist said he needs two implants $3,600 each. The guy was born with a natural breach and the dentist wants to cover that breach with an implant tooth. Implants are way too expensive, so for him, he is using simple prothese for now and thinking to decide with method he will choose. For me both methods are dangerous and implants’ prices are too expensive to me. $7,200 for one natural tooth missing, this is crazy
