Other faves of mine that seem commonly available are Woodchuck, Strongbow, Ace Cider, etc. There's also a couple of local ones I like from here in Minnesota, Sociable Cider Werks and Duluth Cider, no idea how wide spread those are nationally.

    I know I'm late to the party, but I worked at a health food store for a time and I can tell you exactly why white claw is ass. It's specifically because they're marketing themselves as a health product, a low calorie drink, there is an expectation that healthy foods are worse, they have less flavour, sometimes they're more bitter and some companies lean into it. There are healthy natural binding agents for cookies that are vegan, gluten free etc. but half the health food cookies you can get don't use them because it's what's expected, it feels healthier because it's shitty. Making a good low calorie drink isn't hard to do, it's very much intentional, they don't want a good product, they want boozy la croix.

    One of the things I think you're running into with most of the big commercial ones is that they have to have a certain amount of malt to be sold alongside beer. You'll see the same thing with Mike's Hard Lemonade - in Canada, it's straight up vodka; no malt. Here in the States, it's got malt. Because of the beer lobby. Perhaps the niche ones are being sold in a different way? I don't know. Honestly, though, I'd like to see you make your own hard seltzer with a seltzer charger or a table-top seltzer thing. (It's what *I* would do.)

  • @curtishickerson2646

    @curtishickerson2646

    I think the reason that it gets sold as a malt rather than vodka is because some states in the US don’t allow liquor to be sold outside of a state regulated store called an ABC Store. If it’s a malt, you can buy it at Walmart. If it’s liquor based then you have to hope that your local ABC decides to stock it, and unfortunately they usually won’t.

    Yeah, it's a crazy quilt of laws but many more states allow beer to be sold in supermarkets than liquor. It's a shame because alcopops could be a fun category if they weren't all yeasty and gross. I wonder how White Claw and Mike's manage to sell in CA where they're on convenience store shelves next to the spirits-based stuff.

    Love the episodes where you can see him progressively get more and more drunk and the filter just starts to fade from his mouth. Awesome episode Greg!

    There were several brands in this video that I would love to give a try. I haven't even tried all the brands available locally, much less any imports. But from the hard seltzers I *have* tried, by far my favorite is Topo Chico Tropical Mango. The mango aroma is pronounced, and it has a peppery edge that on my very first gulp I thought was terribly weird - and then immediately loved.

    Agreed. I’m not really a seltzer guy but I tried the Topo Chico mango and pineapple flavors and enjoyed them both

    Koppaberg hard seltzer is probably one of the best ones I ever tried. Really flavourful with no weird aftertaste.
