Which evergreen shrubs can I plant in the shady part of my garden
Here at Hayes Garden World our most asked questions are about what to plant in certain problem areas. Nearly everyone has a shady area of the garden so this video will give you some idea what to plant in that difficult spot. Unfortunately shady areas don’t tend to allow for a great display of flowers, but you can add interest with variegated or glossy foliage which reflects the light. If your problem corner is in deep shade for most of the day the variegated foliage may lose its variegation, but will regain it when it reaches a bit of sunlight.
We show you a good range of shrubs which will provide interest throughout the year and cover the whole area, from something to grow up a wall to a ground-covering Periwinkle for the front of the border. The Sarcocca is an excellent shrub for shade and produces the most amazing fragrance in winter when there is not much else of interest. It also makes a good alternative to Box for a parterre edging as it can be clipped to maintain its compact shape.
If your shady area is under deciduous trees then you can have a fantastic display of spring flowers, which take full advantage of the light before the tree bursts into leaf and the canopy closes over.

Thank you for demonstrating these plants in such a clear non technical fashion, Just what the amateur gardener needs.
Helpful video which was well presented. My only other comment is a list of the plants shown in the description box would have been very useful.
I've been looking for information on plants for my shady corner. I live in the UK and most videos are for american gardens. Thank you for this very helpful guide, it's just what I was looking for!
Off the buy a nandina for my shade garden, a brilliant UK based video. Thanks!

I think nandina is supposed to be quite difficult to manage because it is fast growing. I keep mine in pots.
Thanks very helpful

Great info....well presented. Can you give more advice for planting in dry shade under trees?
Thanks 😊
Thank you x
Thank you 😊
I have a CALLICARPA a beautiful winter purple Berry plant, could you suggest any others to go with it to keep the colours going along the line
All so lovely. Do any of them grow tall, say 5 M ? I'm looking for a privacy hedge that only gets a few hours of sun.
It would really help to know what zone these plants are able to grow in.
Would love to know the hardiness zone of the plants you show.
We like to know for what zone are they.
Interesting but, how about zone hardiness info. More than half the plants shown I've never heard of. I live in Minnesota(zone 4).
Nandina can grow in any type of soil and any aspect. Does not require acidic soil.
a video I didn't know I needed until I watched it! :) thank you. I bought a Nandina last year and absolutely love it, it's so pretty. I potted it up in a decent size pot with normal compost and it seems to be doing okay. Would I be better off to repot with the eraceous compost or leave it as it is?

Keep an eye on it and any signs of leaves wilting etc then re pot it. If all ok I’d repot it around autumn with ericaceous just as winter approaches, the plant should be a bit dormant then. Ps keep a look out for a Hydranga call ‘ Runaway Bride’ , not the big ball flowers but small flowers on every stem. Garland type. It was a Chelsea winner, stunning plant. We live up in NE Scotland and it flowers fine up here so looks like climate doesn’t affect it. Good video this.

@@arthurfnshelby4335 thank you! my runaway bride hydrangea arrived last week so i'm VERY excited to see it when it blooms! :D
Which zones are these plants for
Ya, nandina, invasive AF! Camilia, messy, piracantha, PAINFUL! but will make anyone thinking about trespassing, rethink that and kalmia is beautiful but gets pretty big, sarcacocca has supper fragrant flowers, but are not very showy, in fact they are so small that their pretty nonexistent, but they are amazingly sweet smelling and when planted en-mass the smell is intoxicating, one of the first to bloom in spring, the air is saturated with a sweet fragrance that unless you know the plant- no one knows where its coming from because the flowers are so small
Can anyone tell me if all these plants can be grown in tubs as well? 😊
What zone are you in?
I would like to know if there are any larger shrubs which are evergreen and shade living that grow tall and are elegant and wavy: Amelia? Pittosporum?

You could grow vegetables in your garden? herbs? sprouts? fruits? I only saw two comments about these being poisonous and that is quite important for my situation. I'm planning to grow them in quite close vicinity to edible plants so there could be risk of contamination. I can guarantee both of your 2 sons have eaten plants, in fact there is a whole diet based on plants. I will let you research it.
Can’t get the names fast enough

It'd be better if you told us how tall and wide they grow and whether they're wildlife friendly or not.
