Which Ensoniq Sampler Should I Get?

Ensoniq Mirage, EPS Classic, EPS 16+, ASR 10, ASR X or ASR-X Pro? Which Ensoniq sampler should you get? Here are my scattered musings on which musical sampler would be best for you.

Ensoniq Corp. was an American electronics manufacturer, best known throughout the mid-1980s and 1990s for its musical instruments, principally samplers and synthesizers.
Ensoniq Sampler Timeline
1985 - Ensoniq Mirage
1988 - Ensoniq EPS
1989 - Ensoniq EPS-M
1990 - Ensoniq EPS 16 Plus
1992 - Ensoniq ASR-10
1997 - Ensoniq ASR X
1998 - Ensoniq ASR X Pro
Ensoniq Musical Instruments and Digital Systems
Ensoniq entered the instrument market with the Mirage sampling keyboard in 1985. At the price of USD$1500 it cost significantly less than previous samplers such as the Fairlight CMI and the E-MU Emulator. Starting with the ESQ-1, they began producing sample-based synthesizers. Following the success of these products, Ensoniq established a subsidiary in Japan in 1987.
Ensoniq products were highly professional. Strong selling points were ease-of-use and their characteristic "fat", rich sound (generally thought of as being an "American" quality, as opposed to the "Japanese" sound which was more "digital" and somewhat "cold"). After the Mirage, all Ensoniq instruments featured integrated sequencers (even their late '80s and early '90s samplers) providing an all-in-one "digital studio production concept" instrument. These were often called "Music Workstations". Starting with the VFX synthesizer, high-quality effects units were included, in addition most synthesizer and all sampler models featured disk drives and/or RAM cards for storage. The manuals and tutorial documents were clearly written and highly musician-oriented, allowing the users to quickly get satisfactory results from their machines. In 1988, the company enlisted the Dixie Dregs in a limited edition promotional CD Off the Record which featured the band using the EPS sampler and SQ-80 cross wave synthesizer.

I started out on the Mirage rack (with the input filter), then the EPS, the EPS 16+, and finally the ASR-10 (I ran two onstage at a time until I got a Bernoulli drive, loading one while one played...crazy disk swapping live!). I had three at one point, and still have two. Sadly, I'm only using it as a controller these days. Ensoniq kept my music alive for many years! Thanks for the video!

Largely due to your great videos, and a bit of good luck on my part, I’ve ended up with the Mirage, EPS Classic, and an ASR-10 that I just picked up last week. Among those three, it’s amazing how many bases those can cover on a production level.

Bless king this channel is dope. I have a EPS clssic im still learning but the sound character is very unique the filters and bit rate make it very versitile. i also have a ASR X PRO love the sound a little easier to use vs the eps, the adjustable BPM clock is a god send and ya its almost like a sp 1200 update , a sp 1600 lol

Made me so nostalgic I dug out my ASR-10 and DP/4. Hardly even remembered how to use it, but most of it came back quickly- muscle memory! Half of my Syquest disks are malfunctioning, but my most of my favorite samples seem good (including a long manual filter sweep from a Realistic/Moog MG-1 that I can't believe I pulled off so smoothly, and a really weird S&H-esque weirdness that I sampled from my Mirage when it glitched out one day). Ordered a better shape drive and a bunch of blanks off Ebay to save what I can. Unfortunately, it looks like I didn't save my Waveboy effects (had all of them) on the discs, so hopefully I still have the floppies somewhere.

Just found your wonderful channel today. Awesome to find such a nuanced appreciation for Ensoniq gear. Also great to hear your thoughts on what Ensoniq samplers still offer for experimental sound design. I acquired an ASR-10 in 1996 (blue LED screen, SCSI, 16MB RAM) and used it in precisely this way for around 20 years (some efforts in the ambient vein on my Bandcamp page). My ASR-10 is not currently functional (probably just need to take it apart and check ribbon connectors, etc.) and I've been trying to recreate the magic on a Korg Kronos. The Kronos is amazing, but it is not as straightforward to use as the ASR-10. I also miss the ASR-10's lush-sounding 44kHz effects - the combination chorus+reverb+delay effect in particular (not that the Kronos is lacking in this area; it's just different). Anyway, watching your vids brings back some great memories. Must get the ASR-10 up and running again! Thanks for the inspiration!

I was so excited when I bought my asr x in 97. Made some very sonically unique tracks. Sequencer kinda sucked by the sound was heavenly. The effects were dope too. I think I had to add a effects board for that. From what I remember. Wish I had one now. I would just use it for the sound triggered from another sequencer.

The Mirage has a unique feature called Sample Rotate. None of the Eps and Asrs came with it. You could move a Sample start loop point position like say you Sample measure 2,3,4,5...1 has talking or something you didn't want But 2 thru 5 was clean so could grab it, put it on loop mode then with Sample Rotate move the start postion until 5 becomes 1 and the loop sounds so perfect you can't tell it was flipped.

I wanted to find a rackmount so I don't have to deal with the keys part. I Just need the Brain!! lol. There are ASR racks but overseas. I don't want that baby travelling too far. I felt so stupid letting my ASR's go. I have like 100 floppy disks with beats on it. Great video. Lofi is so big right now and ensoniq captures that warm sound that no other brand has like that. I definately be posting videos of my EPS 16+.

Have you ever tried any of the early to mid-2000s groovebox styled samplers from boss/Roland and zoom? Of course you have the sp-202/303 and the larger sp-505/808 series but I had the zoom st-224 sampletrak... it stored samples and sequences via cf card and had variable sample rates from 32khz down to 8. I believe it was 12 bit. And it had a superb sequencer, an effects generator with pad assignment, and resampling. Plus it could scale 8 pads up or down over 3 banks. Only draw back was it had midi in out and thru but it was such an afterthought that it wasn’t worth trying to use. I made some of my best beats on that before I inherited my big brothers asr after he passed

  • @TheDaydreamSound

What's up polyneux74! All Ensoniq samplers will colour any incoming audio so you won't get a faithful rendition of your analog synthesizers when sampled. What I would recommend is the ASR-10 it has the greatest potential to handle audio better in the lower and higher registers which will really help when sampling analog instruments. Overall it will warm your samples up a bit which may help maintain the analog character of your synthesizers once they're in the digital domain. Hope this helps. Peace, TDS www.thedaydreamsound.com

i bought an Eps classic a few months ago, to replace the one i sold (advice - never sell it.. you will buy another).. the new one has 4x memory.. i got nearly 3 minutes of sample time at lowest sample rate... happy happy happy !!! the one i sold only had 2x.... even if memory is not expanded, it's worth buying for the sound.. IMHO... Love your vids !!!!!

I have both ASR-10 from 1995 and the ASRX-Pro Turbo edition, the ASR-10 ha 8 layers per key - 127 samples X 8 per key , ASR-10 has only 8 midi tracks for sequencing whereas the ASRX-Pro Turbo has 16 midi sequencer tracks , the ASRX -Pro Turbo has the Urban Rom which has sounds from Jazzy Jeff and George Clinton Funk master , there are other Roms available , one last thing you didn't mention about the ASR X - Pro Turbo is that it has the STOMP feature , page 39 of the user manual , STOMPER is a real time algorithm created by Hakan "Zap" Anderson , it allows you to generate vintage synthersizer sounds by using the ASR X pro processor , sounds are created and put onto scratch pad and can be saved and used like a sample , it's accessed by pressing the Pad Process Button which says STOMP ! Below process , hope you make a video showing this unique feature which none of the other Ensoniq samplers have

The classic is my baby 4 layers sample chopping without losing memory full envelope dope Crossfade looping. Memory expansion gives to 3 minutes at 22khz. Makes every kick and snare jump out and bass just funky. Works best with mpc sequencer for some reason the automation resets audio to full blast Everytime a pattern turns over ( yes it has automation but it's buggy) you pretty much got to level everything's ng going in. It's probably the best sounding sampler for classic southern and boom bap styles ( it was Mannie freshs s cond go to and rap a lots main thing at their height. It will also give you that 3/6 underground version of sound as well as the original Wu sound. I re did 3/6 throw yo sets original and the whole 36 Chambers Cuban linx and iron Man with this .sidenote a k2500 will give you the Wu forever sound with an asr

2 things always passed over... for all but mirage and ASRX ... Patch Selects. One of the grandfathers of key switching in todays VI's Poly Aftertouch. (On the keyboards) And one more thing... EPS-16+ and ASR10's 12db boost for drums ( From memory the 16+ had this?)... Fk me.... These things have a dynamic range that puts other brands to shame. an owner of 2 x ASR10's keyboards (dont miss my 16+, though I do miss the "Transwave" random glitch not in the ASR) , MR 61, DP4+. Oh and another.... I worked in a music shop, hi tech section.... I was pretty much "The Ensoniq dude" Though ASR-X was not my thing... One things for sure, some of the best drum pads ive ever smacked........
