I used to read a lot of books when I was deployed and had to wait around for orders, which meant that I was usually reading out in the open and white pages reflected too much light. Nowadays I have nice office with warm yellow light and a few collection's of books but my favorite to read are the ones with thick yellow pages.

Glad you included the everyman's library editions. I usually take the dust jacket off and it still looks great. They are my favorite and they hold up really well to being read from my experience. It has a sewn binding and acid free paper. I think its the best value.

Oh, I had no idea it is printed on acid free paper! Good to know :) Actually since filming this video I purchased a few more books in this edition (got it used & for very cheap) and I'm also thinking about keeping them on my bookshelf without the dust jacket. The covers are just STUNNING.

I have only had the experience with Oxford worlds classics and feel like it’s a really good choice, though where I live I often don’t have the option to choose editions since there’s usually only one or two of every book the store supplies when it comes to classics which is pretty annoying.

First of all bless you for making our lives so much easier ♥️ second of all, I can confirm that clothbound classics' covers rub off very easily so that's really annoying. And third of all I also own vintage classics edition handmaid's tale but it has a different cover and I could easily break the spine in that one and read more comfortably (also nice big font) so idk, maybe they have some newer/older editions that are made a bit differently. 🤷‍♀️

There are definitely exceptions to some of the editions! For example not EVERY Penguin Black Classic has this weird cover that starts chipping/wearing off after trying to read it once or twice... but most of them do lol. I'm not quite sure either why that happens but it COULD depend on the year it was printed 🤷‍♀️ But yea just saying, I am making some generalizations here!

Thank you for the nice video. My favourite editions are Everyman followed by Penguin Black Classics. I think among the ones you’ve shown only Everyman have acid-free paper. That’s my only gripe with Penguin, Oxford and Vintage. The paper starts looking horrible after some time. This is even worse in Wordsworth editions. Oxford have great collection but the font seems a bit dated. Surprisingly, I’ve found that if you wait then you can get good deals on Everyman which makes it almost at the same price as Penguin Blacks.

As you'll all know by now, Penguin are gradually transitioning all their black-cover paperback Classics to the new designs as highlighted here at 16.20 mins. I actually prefer the newer versions. Not least their whiter paper & that the authors names are set in (to me) somewhat clearer white lettering on the spines. My older Penguin Classics paperback editions would sometimes be exposed to sunlight &, even after a relatively brief time, the older orange lettering would start to fade. Occasionally, even new copies bought online arrived with slightly faded orange lettering on the spines. At least with these newer versions, the clarity of authors names displayed in white are likely to show far greater longevity, regardless of occasional exposure to sunlight.

I've recently ordered online the black spine penguin classic, in different languages. The quality of the paper can differ depending on the country, the font also and its size and/or spacing. I've also bought the clothbound collection, because I wanted to have classics to read many times over the years, since I like analyzing them. It is true that the penguin clothbound collection wears off really quickly, but even this isn't the reason for not keeping them. The worst part for a somewhat investment -thought to be used many years- is that the pages in this collection aren't sewn, but just glued, which means that probably after reading them a couple of times, they can fall apart. In conclusion, for this type of books, that I want to enjoy many, many years, I opted for Everyman's library. Alternatively, I search for old books, which paradoxically, printed in 60's and 80's, are in a better shape than the new ones.

Great video, totally agree with some of your picks. One thing I'd say is just how helpful the explanatory notes in some of the editions are. Very helpful video! Thanks a lot. Recently, I also started to focus more on books with a normal or bigger font. Everything else is so exhausting. I read The Woman in White in the Wordsworth edition and the font size was way too small, the cover was ugly as hell and it lost its “film” (like your edition of the Handmaid’s Tale). I prefer Vintage, Penguin Classics, Oxford World Classics and Penguin English Library editions. If you want to have some background information about the author or the story also Norton Critical Editions are very well done. 👍🏼 Bloomsbury also published 9 books in a special edition with very nice covers and bigger font size but, well it’s only 9 books... 😂

All in all, I think they are the best in terms of price, cover art, font size, paper quality and additional materials (introductions and notes). Oxford Classics are as good but a bit pricier and have a less wide-ranging collection. BTW, the two Penguins (black spines) you showed are the same. The only difference is the new cover design.

@@ariragogna I'm not sure if you mean the different colors used by Penguin. If so, Penguin publishes the largest collection of classics (English and foreign) in two main series with a uniform design: The Black Spines series and The Modern Classics series. The Modern Series has fancier book covers and is limited to the 20th century and usually does not include supplementary materials as in the Black Spines. Penguin publishes titles from those two series in other much smaller series but with different covers and paper quality (such as Deluxe or Hardcover editions or the Drop Caps series), hence costing more. All in all, I think the Black Spines are the option to go to.

My favorites: 1. Everyman's Library. In general, these are my favorite for the combination of great quality and great price (relative to quality). 2. Modern Library. Similar to Everyman's Library in terms of the combination of quality and price. I tend to prefer Everyman's slightly more, but honestly it could be more or less a toss-up between Everyman and Modern Library depending on the particular book in question (e.g. Moby Dick in the Modern Library has Rockwell Kent's absolutely beautiful artwork). 3. MacMillan Collector's Library. These are great little books as long as one doesn't mind the fits-in-the-palm-of-your-hand size. They're super affordable too, at least in the USA. Currently around $15 or less. 4. Library of America. As far as I know, it only has American literature (e.g. Melville, Twain, Faulkner). Also, the paper is a bit thin, with associated issues (e.g. bleed-through), whereas I tend to like heavier gsm which tends to be more opaque like in Everyman and Modern Library. Still, the Library of America produces high quality volumes that are worth owning. 5. Folio Society. This the highest quality, but also the highest price. I'd love to own one of these someday, but I won't be able to afford it any time soon!

I WAS A PUBLISHER, and a Bertelsmann sales person paper over years yellows there is acid and bleach in whitening paper and the washing is expensive so better is like art / archival paper. The fibers represent the type and recipie of new/ recycled wood pulp and durability due to pressing finishing and polishing. Covers aer either laminated or have a printed varnish or uv lacquers an and can use solvents. They have to weigh costs all the time becasue many paperbacks books are destroyed without ever being sold thru. Bookstores basically returned old./ bad selling books as a regular procedure. Consignment. Distributors grind up full time 1000s of book per week and erturn the ripped off covers to prove they did not sell the book credit rec'd. It was a legally bonded procedure. If you find coverless paperbacks they are likely "illegal" from a scrupulous dealer. Yes they may give you one but it is never meant to be sold but destroyed fro rcredit to avoid resale and they would increase the book price latermif reprinted. Wasteful in my mind. Like dated unsold bread being picked up from stores & tossed a week later. Variety is everything. They use many printers and some counterfits from overseas.

written before i watched the vid when buying a classic, if it was written in english, then get as best quality as you can afford, eg penguin over wordsworth classics. if its a book you love, try and go for the hardback version. if its an ancient book that has been translated, i google to find the most accurate translation as that is my thing others preferr the most readable translation ..this is not my thing so you should go for the translation your prefer...be it accurate or readability. once found again if its a book you love, then get the hardback, otherwise get the paperback. another rule i have is to never buy these pop up publishers that when you open the book its like cheap photocopied paper ...i find a lot of these types for philosophy. thats it. remember the better quality the book, if you love the content; you will love the book even more. another thing ...when buying a hardback with sheath, i always remove the sheath and put it in a specially made hard sheath whilst reading the book and then put the sheath back on when i have finished throwing it around. sometimes it is best to buy second hand good condition books that are expensive when brand new...eg the loeb versions of plato, which have both the greek and english translation on opposing pages, are hardback and have a nice green sheath, and are the most word for word accurate translation.

I don't like the new black and white drawings on the covers of the Penguin Black classics - bring back the old paintings! I find the Barnes and Noble classic paperbacks to be of similar quality and content but with more durable spines than the Penguins, so I tend to collect those and go for the Penguins for more obscure titles. In the US we also have available Library of America which are similar to Everyman's in quality - hardcover, usually collecting multiple works per volume, and acid free paper, ribbon bookmark, etc. LOA only features American authors, though. They are often available pretty cheap used. I can't stand a book that is not readable, so I shy away from editions that look fancy but don't hold up such as the Penguin clothbound classics or some of the fancy paperbacks that are super stiff and hard to open.

I'm a bit late for this video, but I'm also so irritated by the Everyman's Library editions! First of all the missing notes are sometimes really annoying (I read Villette in that edition and there was SO MUCH FRENCH and NO TRANSLATIONS which is why I constantly had to use Google Translator to understand some things) and also all my Everyman's Library books have different fonts and in some the pages are more white, but in others they are very yellow. Thanks for that lovely informative video!

Not late at all, for some reason KZread started recommending this video to a bunch of people so it's getting some views these days 😅 But wow, I read Villette and I was annoyed just by constantly going back and forth between text and the notes so I connot even imagine how frustrating it must have been to read it WITHOUT any notes! Oh, I didn't know they differ so much from book to book, it's a shame. Thank you, I'm really happy this video seems to be helping a lot of people 🥰

I just bought a new book by everyman library. It's "The Red and The Black" by Stendhal. And I like to read a book while listening to the audiobook. But the translation of the audiobook is different from the book's translation.

I think they are probably more for show. I have one of these , Alice in Wonderland. It is white with Flamingoes on it. It was a 50th Birthday present last year and is my all time favourite book. I have a reading copy in the Penguin Black Classics as well.

I'd prefer the Oxford Classics or the Penguin classics. The Vintage Classics are not much helpful. I purchased Vintage Classics editions of Franz Kafka's The Trial, Faulkner's Light in August and London's White Fang during my university years. Those editions don't provide much other than the text. If you need to understand the background of the book or the author, you should go for the Penguin or Oxford ones. Try avoiding the Wordsworth Classics too.

I probably should have prefaced the video with a disclaimer saying that I didn't study literature so I'm not reviewing those books from an academic standpoint. You're right though, Vintage Classics do not have notes and I should have mentioned that in the video. I am interested though, why are you not recommending Wordsworth Classics? Are the notes not very good? Thank you for the comment, I think it would be useful to know that kind of information for people who need those books for classes.

@@AniasBellJar I should be the one thanking you. You were kind and sincere enough to reply to my comment. I had commented on other book haul videos previously and everytime my assertions had gone unregarded after which I deleted them. Wordsworth Classics are very popular in India as they come cheaper than the other international publishing houses of the classics. But I found the Penguin and the Oxford ones very helpful as they provided the notes and all the necessary information. I hence believe they are better than the Wordsworth editions. Pardon me if I irritated you with any aspect of my rhetoric. Thank you again young lady and may God bless you.

Very helpful!. I have been tempted to buy some Macmillan because they look so pretty but the small size and especially font is a problem for me. I have astigmatism too so yes, I totally understand you. I have two Brontë vintage classics book in that small size and they are so pretty but hard to read them (unless you don't mind breaking the spine to bend them). Just a comment on the Black penguins, I used to buy them more but with the newest editions I found the font had increased and it was actually a problem for me to read. Maybe not with all books, but definitely with the long ones.

I just don't understand how people can be breaking book's spine. Do they have their arms growing right out of their ass or what? In my HUGE collection of books there's only one with a broken spine and it was done not by me but by a barbaric kid that had no idea how to open books. And this one specific book angers me to a point of complete rage even though a lot of time passed after the incident.
