Which Digital Compact Cassette Recorder should you be buying? The Ultimate DCC Test.

Ғылым және технология

We made this video, because we receive this question frequently.
What dcc recorder or player should I be buying?
The Fourth Generation:
Pros: Most features, fast mechanism
Cons: Trickiest to restore, expensive
Available only in 100V and 220V
The Third Generation:
Pros: fast mechanism, problem free and have a microphone input.
Cons: Fewer features, features are harder to access and no VU
Available only in 220V
The Second Generation:
Pros: Problem free, most inexpensive to purchase, VU.
Cons: 16-bit, slower mechanism and potentially risky if the gear/toothed wheel fails.
Available only in 110 and 220V
The First Generation:
Pros: Widely available, VU, once restored built to last.
Cons: 16bit, slower mechanism and always in need of restoration (replacing leaking capacitors is a must)
Available in 100, 110 and 220V

I recently managed to obtain a New-old-stock Philips DCC-600. The package was complete. But I was reminded of the capacitors-issue. So before even powering it up I checked most of the DCC Museum videos and hoped for the best. I'm not a electronic-savvy person that would be able to replace capacitors etc. But I am a tape-enthousiast from the Netherlands and was so pleased with this brand-new old-stock device that I want to implement it back into my audio-gear-setup. I managed to find a few sealed DCC recordable tapes and fiddled with it a bit. However I heard a few dropouts and started to worry. So for the time being, I'm desperately gathering all the info I would need to find out what the problem might be. I hope it's not these boards or other stuff, because there's nobody near me that's capable of repairing these devices. Please keep making these videos, no matter how long they are up, they are still watched. And it gave me a breathe of relief to hear/see that the DCC600 is one of the 'better reliable ones' if it comes to capacitors etc. Let's hope for the best.

There are only 2 recorders within the 3rd generation. The 730 and 951. These machines are so identical that making a choice and giving advice has to come from personal preference. I made the choice on the fact that the 730 is black and harder to find. So very personal indeed. The same thing happens within the 2nd generation. All recorders have the same specifications, so choices would be personal and I would always opt for the "different hard to get", like a 450 or Grundig 305. With the first Generation the Marantz DD92 is a clear winner in specs, as is the Victor 919 in the fourth Generation.

If you have recapped the first board (on the mechanism), you biggest problems are over. The second audio board to the right still needs recapping, but if that dies, you can at least get a replacement for it. The first board you really can't do that (easily). What is your location? We might be able to help depending.

In total, I'm om my 4th DCC player. I've had DCC in my life since 1994. I just sold my faulty philips DCC 900 with its dodgy capacitors. I had them changed, but there was still no sound, so bye, bye DCC. I have the 18bit philips DCC 730 now, it's the second one I've brought in the history on my DCC ownership. This one does have a problem, the fast forward doesn't work for some reason. Play, rewind, auto reverse 🔀 pause all work fine apart from the fast forward button. I can't try fast forward off the remote because like an idiot, I included it in the DCC 900 sale. I didn't think I'd buy another one. However, the 730 works 99% so I'm happy I suppose. I had a problem with a lumpy pinch roller but I sanded the surface smooth and it works great. I noticed that normal cassette twin decks use the same pinch rollers so I could swap them if I need, but I don't, so that's good. Anyone have any ideas why fast forward is not working? I've had a quick look inside but I don't know what to check for. There's nothing at all when you press fast forward off the button.
