Swedish dialects is a collective term that includes partly the various genuine dialects with roots in Old East Norse historically spoken in present-day Sweden and Finland, and partly the modern variants of the standard language. The genuine dialects are also called village dialects or parish dialects. Even in areas that have long been part of Sweden, but which previously belonged to Norway or Denmark, it is usually said that the population speaks Swedish dialects. In the areas that have previously belonged to Denmark (Skåne, Blekinge and Halland) they also speak Eastern Danish dialects, with the exception of the Gotama-speaking northern half of Halland. Gutniskan, which is spoken on Gotland, does not originate from Old Swedish, but is still often counted among the Swedish dialects because Gotland is part of Sweden.
Many of the more distinctive dialects spoken in places such as Klövsjö in Jämtland, Orsa in Dalarna, Burträsk in Västerbotten or Närpes in Ostrobothnia often include more distinct phonetic and grammatical aspects, such as the maintenance of older case systems. These dialects can be almost incomprehensible to most Swedes, and most speakers also have a command of national or high Swedish. The dialects are often so local that they can be limited to individual parishes. These original folk goals have been weakened due to dialectphobic policies and dialectphobic attitudes, especially in schools from the 19th century until the end of the 20th century. In Sweden, no dialects have been given any official status, even though Sweden has signed the Minority Language Convention. Älvdalska, for example, was recognized as its own language by SIL International in 2015, with the designation ovd on Ethnologue.
