I really don't get the mindset that one game is "harder" because the other has more cheap tactics lol. Going back and farming orbs for items doesn't mean the game is easier. Easier to cheese? DMC3's DMD mode is the one that kicked my ass the most, but I feel like 1 has the best designed and most fun DMD mode of the series. It makes the bosses feel more tactical and intense. But if youre willing to replay missions 1 and 2 for and hour and a half to unlock air hike and a few rebellion combos and ebony ivory charge shots it makes the cerberus fight night and day different as far as difficulty. I know I’m a few days late but as an hardcore fan of DMC (I’ve played every game and beaten them all in all difficulty levels). I’d list the games from personal experience I find to be easiest (even on DMD) to hardest DMC2: literally the easiest game in the series regardless of what difficulty level you’re on. The enemies attack patterns are so bad that sometimes enemies don’t even attack at all or have horrid AI. The pew pew memes are really true here since you can just gun down everything and not really have to worry about anything. Oh and Maijin form can obliterate everything even if you have to be low on health to activate it but if you’re low health on DMC2 you’re either intentionally trying to get Maijin form or you just don’t care. Only hard part was Bolverk and Argosax since they’re the only good designed boss fights. Every other boss is still piss easy cuz pew pew DMC4: This game just has stupidly designed enemies that make the game feel harder then it should be (try killing a DTed Blitz as Trish and tell me that’s good game design). Other then that the game is fairly tame in it’s difficulty. The hardest boss was Sanctus only because of bad design choices for his fight. DMC5: Like you said only certain enemies become an issue due to how much of a tank certain enemies become. V’s missions are hard by virtue to the fact his familiars do not receive a defense boost against the damage of DMD enemies so more often then not they’re dead 80% of the time if you do not learn how to manage them. Even then it’s just a chore because they still die in one hit even if they are DTed themselves. I found the bosses to actually be the most fair even on DMD (except for King Cerberus, fuck him and his stupid ice roar attack). DMC1: This game honestly has the best designed DMD mode as if you know how to exploit certain enemy weakness you can down them before the timer runs out. Mundus, Nightmare, and Nelo Angelo 3 however are pretty fucking BS at times because one slip up can lead to death in just 3 hits or so. (Fun fact this game was the first game I ever platinumed and the first one I beat on DMD). DMC3: holy shit this game was actually irritating for me first time I beat it on DMD. Certain enemies like Enigmas, Hell Vanguards, Fallens, and Soul Eaters can really make you want to break your controller and the fact there’s a hidden timer this time around can really lead to moments of anxiety when it comes to certain encounters. Also the “if you kill 3 enemies every other enemy in the room DT’s” rule really wasn’t necessary since DMC3 likes to throw a lot of enemies at you anyway and certain rooms are just unbearable due to the enemy combinations since you’d want to prioritize the annoying enemies first before taking on the stronger ones but if you do that the stronger enemies become even more stronger. Key use of DT explosion is needed to make this mode even the slightest bearable. The bosses oh man they’re tanky and they can kill you in just 3-5 hits, good luck (DMD Geryon is literally the worst thing ever followed by Arkham). All in all I find this game to be the hardest period, this game on DMD mode really doesn’t fuck around.

Maybe a follow up could be about specific encounters which are difficult in DMD or other modes (not just bosses, but a locked room which asks a lot of you). Enemies are also interesting but you never fight a lone Frost even though they are decent foes in 1 and 4. One thing about dmc3: if you beat Very Hard you get Super Dante before DMD. It's limited DT with no health Regen but that actually allowed me to beat dmd on 3. Dmc1 however was so rewarding because there are times where you have to go back; collecting 3 digits of yellow orbs to fully learn how to react to Nelo 3, or counter every measure to Mundus 2. One thing that really got me on DMC1 bosses was that many were at the end of the level, so if you died you would be repeating them without the items you used or else repeating the entire level (Griffon, anyone?), so lack of farming really made a difference.

9:38 I did multiple playthroughs for my DMD run of DMC1 a year ago, so I figured I'd give my experience. I did 5 runs on Normal (+1 on Hard to unlock DMD) to prepare for DMD, picking up a good chunk of the available items, but not all of them. I had 21 Untouchables and ~30 Devil Stars going into the run. I didn't use any Untouchables until Nightmare 1. Before that, bosses were definitely tough, but fair and possible to do without items. Nightmare 1 is a huge jump in difficulty, and not in a completely good way. Throughout the entire run, I used 9 Untouchables total: 1 on Nightmare 1 4 on Nightmare 3 (Yeah, this fight is really bad...) 2 on Mundus 2 2 on Mundus 3 You could probably do the Mundus fights with 0 or 1 Untouchables. I also didn't use Devil Stars outside of cheesing Mundus 1. In general, I think you only need about 3 or 4 item collection runs and 15 Untouchables max to get through DMD. Knowing how to handle the bosses is much more important than stockpiling items. Hope this helps!

Dmc 3 made me feel like a punk. It was my first intro into the series that I bought literally in a bargain store in the middle of nowhere bc it looked kind of neat and i figured for 10 bucks whats to lose. Fucking reaper and cerberus were kicking my ASS and i had beaten mercenaries on re4, titan mode on gow2 etc so i was used to hard. I couldnt image how this game was kicking my ass so much then years later discovered that the copy I had was one of those where "normal" mode was actually "hard" mode and for a brand new player who Wasnt yet familiar with how the combat system or the necessity of buying new abilities was, it was basically like saying you have to beat mike Tyson when youre a newbie and the best boxing gloves you have are oven mits

No game has ever given the sense of accomplishment, pride, and utter RELIEF that DMC1 did when I completed it on Dante Must Die mode. I remember it was night, no other lights were on, and I spent hours on end struggling with Nightmare and Mundus back to back. My eyes were stinging, I was tired, consumed by the black of the room, suffering death after embarrassing death until, by some miracle of luck, I did it. I beat Mundus. My ass was clenched so tight as I hauled my way out of Mallet Island, every lesser demon encounter putting me in fight or flight mode. As if a single death would make me have to go back and do it all again. But, somehow, I tore through Mundus 3, escaped, breathed a sigh of relief and heard Dante shout the line he ONLY does on DMD mode and my hype returned. And then that exclusive rendition of Pillow Talk it rewards you with... I left the game on and went to sleep with it playing in the background that night. Devil May Cry 1 is truly unique.

I know this is in general which is more difficult, but Lady/Trish on DMD mode were giving me DMC1 DMD flashbacks. DMC1 was a nightmare to play on DMD mode but it felt rewarding as hell beating bosses or the tough mini bosses (Shadow). The best comparison I can give for it is like beating bosses in the souls games blind. While DMC4 was the first one I did play and beat DMD mode, it was challenging, it didn’t feel quite as rewarding as DMC1 DMD bosses.

I remember when I had it on Ps2 I played so much that I finished hard but Toke me so long that the disk was broke and the 3rd cutscene of the intro wouldn't load so I couldn't start dmd so years later I bought the HD collection for ps4 and in one month I was on mission 15 of dmd. With more practice I pull through and I had platinum. Although I haven't completed dmc2 4 and 5 and the 3rd with vergil (at least on HD collection of ps4 cause back on my Ps2 days I completed with vergil) One final note I haven't been able to platnuim the 3rd because doing s rank on missions 16 to 20 is hard on any difficulty

I think that seems about fair for DMD mode on all of the games. Also, as a previously avid DMC1 player, "Do or Die" (that timer that appears) wasn't relegated to just story required encounters. There are some rooms that have it, even if it isn't necessary to go into that room to progress. If you're trying to speed clear missions (which is, to be fair, needed for S ranks), these rooms will go largely ignored. Furthermore, enemies still DTed at random if left alone long enough without the timer, so it was still punishing in that regard if you were taking too slow on getting rid of the first waves. The only thing that really alleviates this mode is that enemies in the game don't mix. If you get puppets in the room, that's all that's going to spawn until you leave. If you get Death scissors, that's all that will be there. If you get a pair of Kyclops, that's all the encounter will be. ETC. So, with that in mind, you could at least have a pretty solid strategy when facing off against the current mobs in the room that doesn't have to get too terribly complex. After all, enemy mixing didn't appear until DMC2...

I havent played 1 in a long time but between 3 to 5 I have to say DMC3 on DMD is the hardest thing I've ever played in a long time. So many cheap enemies make it almost impossible to win sometimes. The enemies that can phase in and out of walls, the shooting enemies that constantly back off and you cant stagger, the swirling razor discs along the walls that you had to deal with while fighting, the summoners being particularly harder to kill with their small hit boxes and tremendously big health bars, not to mention the pace breaking spiders that are always stopping your momentum in your tracks, etc. All these factors and many more make DMC 3 a nightmare to me compared to the latter games in the series. Their is hard but 3 particularly borders on the line of cheap when it comes to DMD. The unfair kind of shit you have to deal with in that game is unrivaled by any game except maybe 1.

DMC2 seems really unforgiving if you're going for S ranks in DMD (I'm *never* going to bother with that for DMC2). The boss health and some of the moves you are expected to dodge by the bosses and on some of the regular mobs alone (like getting gangbanged by 3-4 goatmen) is absolutely unforgiving. This will drain a lot of your Time and Damage score. If the moves were not so bloody cheap in the game, getting an S in style during combat would be fairly easy, since you can dodge your way all up to the S rank. Never bothered to even try, I just farmed orbs, bought healing items, and tanked my way through the rest of the DMD mode once I got to mission 16, where the game started to really test my patience for all the wrong reasons.

In dmc 4 (bc of the ass kicking 3 gave me) I literally replayed the mission where you fighter berial til i had a vast majority of neros moves unlocked and a pretty decent use of the exceed move and really knew how to abuse the devil bringer. I knew id get to play as dante eventually so I saved up alot of orbs and when I got to him i was able to buy everything he had available from the start then just upgrade the new weapons as I got them If you dont mind a grind them yea 3-5 can be SUPER easy if you just spend a few hours replaying certain missions

Pretty good list. The original is probably the hardest for the reasons that you described, the enemies were a joke but the bosses were insane coupled with really dated mechanics made certain bosses such as Mundus and Nelo Angelo 3 nearly impossible to beat. DMC 3 might be harder is you aren't using any items or super forms. The final fight against Vergil is extremely difficult even with items and Super Vergil. I'm playing DMC 5 on Dante Must Die with Vergil and so far it is mostly kind of easy. I've still gone down a few times but so far it feels easier than DMC 3 with those features.

I originally wanted to platinum them all but 2 cause me far too much pain and then the wind went out of my sails and I know longer wanted to. I'm not even exaggerating for those who haven't played it. I really don't count item usage as a strategy and I view it more as a "I don't give a fuck if I suck anymore" resort so my reasonings are a lot different than yours personally, but even then I agree that DMC1 is the hardest. I think there's a lot about each lesser demon that you need to learn the anatomy of. Even the Marionettes are extremely complex that I could make a 15+ minute video if I made an enemy guide on them. Also the fact that dodging a lot more difficult than in the other games makes the game so much harder. Your jumps and rolls have barely any invincibility frames that actually using the invincibility frames would require a stricter timing than a DMC3 Royalguard timing. There are also many times where enemies do a certain combination of attacks which sometimes makes dodging all attacks nearly or completely impossible (which I view as a design flaw) due to the strict dodging, so you have to control the crowd to avoid that situation. It's a really good thing they didn't decide to mix different types of enemies like in the later games because it would not have worked in DMC1. All that being said, though, I also think that DMC1 DMD is actually the most fun and best balanced between the fun factor and the challenge factor. DMC3 DMD is also considered to be the hardest by many people, but I just think it becomes extremely tedious and it takes away a lot of the fun because of the extreme health boost. Also, aside from the Marionettes, Bloody Maris, Fetishes, Beelzebubs, Plasmas, Sin Scythes, and Sin Scissors, the enemies in DMC1 didn't get a health boost in DT, and aside from Marionettes, Bloody Maris, Fetishes, and Nobodies, the enemies in DMC1 didn't get any hyper armour in DT, which made the enemies still challenging to fight (they do the biggest damage in the series if they hit you with DT) but were still fun to fuck around with.

i haven't beaten any of the DMD modes so here's my ratings based on each game's Normal difficulty. i will also assume Turbo is on if the game has it. i'm also assuming no items since most games are pretty easy with item spam. Devil May Cry 1 this game is hard, no joke. i legit couldn't beat Phantom on my first run, even on Easy. i did eventually come back and beat the game on Normal, and it's one of the most satisfying games to beat. this game also has my favorite boss in Nelo Angelo. Devil May Cry 4 maybe due to my experience with DMC3, and lack thereof with 4, as i'm not good with Nero. but there are absolutely brutal enemies like the Chimera and Blitz enemies which make not taking damage hell, not to mention some challenging (yet fun as hell) bosses like Credo, but this game is so frustrating at times I SWEAR TO SPARDA IF I SEE ENEMY HANDICAP ONE MORE TIME ON MY GODDA- [PLEASE STAND BY] Devil May Cry 3 (USA) i think this game is overrated in terms of difficulty, enemy tells are very obvious. i know exactly what Agni & Rudra are going to do and have plenty of time to react to it. while i don't think this game is easy, it's very fair. Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition just following the vanilla game, USA was made harder by making Hard mode into Normal mode, but more importantly using the Yellow Orb system. in SE, you get unlimited continues and up to 3 revives on the spot, however, this game has Turbo mode, making the game that much more chaotic and fast-paced. Devil May Cry 2 this game is harder than a lot of people give it credit for, but its still DMC2, being far and away easier than 3SE, even with Turbo off. there's some bosses that require you to pay attention such as the Assault Chopper, Trismagia and Argosax. DmC: Devil May Cry (base game) this is one of the easiest games i've ever played, i'm considering Nephilim Normal, even Devil Hunter is insulting, Nephilim is still easier than DMC2 normal, and at least DMC2 didn't hand out ranks like popcorn. the only way to get any challenge is to play DMD, but i have to admit DMD is quite fun, but barely compareable to most games' Hard modes, let alone compared to most DMC games. even then you'll have all your upgrades and weapons by the time you reach it. haven't played DMC5 Edit: i'm going to get looks for putting 4 above 3, but i think the twins as bosses exemplify this really well, in DMC3 you have more moves and ways of dealing with Vergil, but as Nero in 4, you have less ways to deal with Dante in DMC4, i can't beat him on SoS/LDK mode without cheating by using items or spamming max charge shot (a move i called useless), back to Vergil and i've first-tried his 3rd fight before Edit 2: also DMC4 has horrendous checkpointing. died after beating the second forced fight in M11? back to start.

I'd say DMC3 is the hardest by far, but that may be because I love DMC1 so I have replayed it plenty of times. Along the way I may've actually gotten good, since I can beat Hard no sweat. DMD is ofc pain though. However 3 even on Normal mode annoys me, I genuinely don't like fighting most of the bosses and enemies in it. I love how they gave you more camera control and faster weapon switching tho. Then after that there's DMC4 which can get cancerous but usually not fatal. DMC5 so far is the easiest game, haven't died at all (on Normal). DMC2 doesn't even count since its just gun spam

@@Walamonga1313 forgot to reply like me thinking 4 is harder than 3, experience and personal mentality likely has a lot to do with thinking 3 is harder than 1. i'd like to mention that the first phantom fight was absolutely dreadful on my first playthrough, so hard i didn't go back to it after finishing 3 and 4, and not from a lack of attempts. cerberus took me a fair several tries on my first run to be fair. i also think its unfair not to count 2, its still more challenging than DmC, while that's not saying much, 2 at least gives me a little bit of trouble on Normal with Trismagia and Argosax

maybe its just my skills deteriorating as the years go by, but i havent had as much trouble with bosses than in 5. Even on normal I cant guarantee not using a revive against a boss

I think bosses were hardest in DMC 3, but DMC 1 overall was harder as a game due to the fact there were completely no checkpoints. I remember that one mission that had a mini boss (nightmare-like dog) and Nelo Angelo was a pain in the ass. If you died against Nelo, you had to start from the beginning.

DMC1 on ps2, I don’t think you can do multiple playthroughs on normal to farm items. You start from scratch when selecting DmD.

Dmc 2 is the hardest hands down. I don't know how the developers managed to do it but every time I played I would fall asleep, meaning I would die to the enemy. I have tried to beat the first mission many times and I still can't do it.

DMC5 on dmd has whats called bullshit difficulty... making the enemies soo tanky and resilient bulletsponges that its not actually fun to fight them when they DT.

Well there’s also instant kills for several enemies (prime states) and tons of high damage maneuvers. Optimal combos are something people seem to have forgotten about while favoring stylish combos instead. People also tend to not use distortions like they did in 4, even though they still are incredibly useful
