Also found a couple of older and now unlisted/private videos like the Jonifer series and others that were fun to rewatch again. • @wlf9579

    The Winston-Peters projection is a great compromise because it shows (1) the accurate seaborders - that were initially used by Europeans sea merchants to recognize coasts and calculate the nautical distance from one coast to another - and (2) it also tends to keep a rather realistic size-ratio for each country regardless of where that country is located on the globe. I'm not a huge fan of the Mercator projection as it was presumably a means for colonial Europeans to emphasize the geographic size of Europe during the Middle Ages and to downsize other areas. Thankfully scientists have brought forth a more accurate way to perceive the world but it's hard to picture that the Mercator projection was globally accepted as the realistic projection of the world.

  • @pdoyled

    @pdoyled

    Жыл бұрын

    The idea that the Mercator projection enforces European colonialism size and superiority is a fallacy. It just shows how a round 3D globe looks stretched onto a 2D flat surface, which is also good for naval navigation. But I agree there are better versions and interpretations of more accurately representative maps

    All maps have distortion because mapping an ellipsoid on a flat map surface is just impossible to accurately do. So on world maps like that, you generally see the greatest accuracy along the equator. But one technique we actually do in mapping is using tangent liness, which means essentially putting that "more accurate equator" line on an area of interest like say the US. This in turn would make mapping the United States map more accurate, but countries away from the US would lose spatial accuracy.
