To be honest, I'm more worried about surface visibility than I am underwater.

My SMB is bright yellow. I dive in an area with a lot of boat traffic so I like being visible. I still got a set of fish hooks in me from a careless fisherman. Despite having DIVER BELOW written on my SMB he still trolled right over us. My dive buddy cut the fishline for me. I got a bit lucky as I was wearing a 7mm wetsuit and I didn’t get stuck too bad and I didn’t get my BCD punctured.

Excellent presentation. Some years ago I participated in a fun project for the USN which tried to demonstrate the best visibility for rescue. We took photos using only natural light from the surface to 100ft.(30m). The clear "winner" was the fluorescent yellow/lime. It is still puzzling to see "International orange" on safety equipment/clothing. It's not bad but at dawn and dusk when the light is particularly orange, it almost disappears.

This actually came up in a motorcycle course I took. The fluorescent yellow was the most visible and had the least amount of accidents.

Thank you for making this video. When I started scuba diving in 2016 I picked Pink as my color. Not knowing how visible it was underwater or on the surface. It just happens to be one of my favorite colors. But divers & my buddies commented that they could easily pick me out from the underwater crowd. My local dive shop teased me for getting everything I could in pink. Now the joke is on them because it’s one of the best colors to have. 😃

Great topic. In 51 years, as a recreational diver, I have purchased yellow/black equipment as a personal choice on a few occasions includng the most recent equipment replacement a few years ago. The yum yum yellow issue was always mentioned. I assumed it was because the contrast of colour stood out making me more of a POI. I have different coloured equipment (black) if I think I will be among more aggresive fauna. It allows me to try my different fins & masks at the same time. Usually diving with others, I am not nervous about colour. For many, fashion plays a part as opposed to thosejust looking to increase their personal safety. Good article.

My favorite color for fins is white. At normal dive distances they are easily recognizable so my dive buddy can easily locate me. And best of all, a short video of my fins gives me a white sample to color correct my video in editing software.

Nice presentation, I just have one comment to make. The darker green is often used in oxyclean regulators and can therefore be mistaken, that's one point to look out for

Thanks. I enjoy the videos. Can you do a video for pre diving preparations for our dive camera as well as after dive care? I've been out of the water for too long and can not remember how to make sure my camera housing is ready. Thank you

It's mainly looking after that seal, making sure that it's clean, there's not debris on it and it's not deformed in any way. Some divers take the empty housing on their check dive just to see if it's air tight without risking their camera. After a dive give it a wash with fresh water and a gentle scrub with a soft toothbrush. Give the seal a very light coat of silicone grease (or whatever the manufacturer recommends) and check for damage or debris. A lot of modern housings can be fitted with vacuum valves and flood alarms so you can abort the dive at the first signs of water ingress.

#askmark Hey I’m a follower of the channel and previous ones . You do amazing work and have quickly become my go to guy for anything scuba. I have 30 dives and my PADI rescue cert. I recently started to buy my own gear. purchased the XR trim, Hollis F2 fins , Hollis M2 mask , that you reviewed on the Chanel and the mares flexa 543 wet suite and mares boots. I’m looking for some guidance on the rest of my kit. I live in Australia but like even more tropical travel destinations and I’m going to dive everywhere I can. So small compact light high quality gear is a must for me I think. I was looking at the Mares SXS 62X you reviewed vs spending a bunch on aqualungs (heavier?) Finally I was wondering about GoPro 11 vs the Sealife sport diver mobile housing… I’m concerned with finicky issues such as leak test malfunction I read about and any functionality issues if they are common? If you can give me some guidance here that would be much appreciated 🙏🏽

I love side exhaust regulators and Mares are in a good standing right now. And the 62X I think is the smallest 1st stage on the market right now so perfect for travel. You always run the risk of floods every time you take electronics in the water. Most floods are due to user error. The Sealife sport diver mobile housing was in the news recently because one was lost at sea for weeks but the phone inside was fine and returned to its owner. GoPros are a solid safe choice and you know what results you're going to get. Modern phones also create great images today. Just bare in mind that if it floods you lose more than your camera

After watching this review i started the logical step in trying to find a pair of Neon green tech fins as an alternative to my yellow Aqualung storm fins. Unfortunately I can't seem that find any...🤔 My logic here is that for non tech diving i will use yellow as my accest colour and neon green for tech diving. But my plans seem scarpered at first attempt.

I've been using bright yellow Poseidons for years now and was met with a chorus of quacks when I first put them on in the pool. It was only after a few real dives that people started to appreciate them since they made me very easy to spot. I have never seen neon green fins but will be on the lookout from now on.

Turquoise and lighter blues are ok. It all depends on the background. If you're diving in bright blue waters it will get lost, darker blue and greener waters it stands out quite well. the vis and ambient light is usually the limiting factor.

#ASKMARK. What is reason S.C.U.B.A. cylinders cannot be repainted ?

  • @ScubaDiverMagazine

    @ScubaDiverMagazine

    9 ай бұрын

You can, however you need to be sure that you do it the right way, with the right chemical treatments and temperatures. If you use the wrong paint and don't prepare the cylinder correctly it can lead to corrosion and weakening of the metal which is now hidden by a new coat of paint so you can't see the corrosion. If your cylinder needs repainting it's best that you ask your dive centre or cylinder manufacturer to make sure that it's done properly.

For land surveying flagging fluorescent pink is best. It probably will not go over well as scuba gear. Not perceived as macho. For marking pavement white spray pain is best. Last longest. Does not look like white was even considered.

Why would you want to look like a tech diver and then float about at 18 meters? You can wear a pink dry suit for all I care. If I see you lugging 4 or 6 cylinders around in the water, I know what's what, no matter your equipment color. And if you are smart, you wear bright in an overhead environment.
