Which camera is right for YOU? Canon R5 and Nikon Z8 in a practical comparison

Even though the Nikon Z8 and Canon EOS R5 basically appeal to a similar target group, there are some differences between the two cameras.
I was able to shoot extensively with both and in this video I will discuss differences in operation, image quality, autofocus, viewfinder, continuous shooting and much more. If you're new to photography or switching from a DSLR, I hope this comparison video helps you out.

I don't know about the R5, but I would definitely mention the fact that the Z8 can record raw video directly to the card and no Atomos Ninja is needed. That's great news for video makers.

The R5 can also record 8K raw internally. But I think the Nikon has more options. But as I mentioned, the video was mainly about the photo features as I‘m not an expert in video 🙈

Fabian. I must say, your comparison of the two cameras was so detailed and spot on. At least from a Z8 shooter point of view. Your Z8 insight can only come from someone who has actually taken the time to learn the system. Even your description of the R5 is spot on to all the videos I’ve watch. I love the tech wars and watch as many different camera videos as I can. Competition, is good for all brand shooters. I shoot lossless compression 14 bit on my Z8. Card choice for Z8/Z9 is really important. My one Sony Tough Card doesn’t work well, but the Delkin Black is a speed Demond. What a great video… Keep them coming. As you mentioned there are a few situations where the Z8 AF struggles. Maybe Nikon will see your video and push an AF firmware!

I think Nikon Z8/9 they both have smaller buffer but have higher write speeds so they more rely on and benefit from faster CFeB cards, whereas Canon R5/R6/R3 have bigger buffer but slower write speeds, so are not as much sensitive to card performance as Nikon. What I mean, is that having Delkin Black CFeB car or similar is more beneficial with the Nikon cameras for sustained high fps over more than few seconds vs the Canon, which gives very similar fps until it hits the buffer and only then, when flushing the buffer, you have some benefit from faster cards.

I was able to try a z9 for a week recently, with the new Bird AF/Firmware. Definitely better than before, but still.... not quite as good/consistent as R5. Was getting stuck on background yet, like said in this video. Or seemed to take alot more work vs. Canon. I am hopeful they will continue to improve as well/add it to Z8. The Z9 was very nice overall, but the AF kept me away yet.

Thank you for the methodical and thorough review. I especially appreciate information about how the performance changes with ISO variation and mechanical vs electronic vs first curtain shutter. Looking at images at 100 ISO is a great start point to but in practise not many bird in flight photos at 600mm and fast shutter speed will be going to be at ISO100. I would like to upgrade to mirrorless, from 7DMkii plus 100-400 to have the benefit of silent shooting, and improved autofocus for birds in flight. That makes Nikon with the electronic shutter only and stacked sensor very interesting.

I’m looking for the best AF I can afford first & formost when I trade up or add a mirrorless. I’m thinking the Sony A7R5 is a strong contender. Would I like 12, 14 or, 20 fps when needed. So I find it interesting it can track dogs and birds heads when its not looking at you but has a problem detecting a birds face through some light grass. Really hope that can be made better in firmware.

Nice balanced review, Fabian. As a Z8 and Z9 shooter, I get that the Canon may be better, at least incrementally, on certain features, whereas the Nikon is probably better on others. For me, I speak Nikon, not Canon, so the ergonomics of the Z8/Z9 made me feel at home. Although initially my stable of f-mounted lenses also played a part with my staying with Nikon, in that I could use them on the Z cameras with the FTZ Adapter, once I started acquiring Z lenses, I was hooked by their sharpness and autofocus improvement versus the f-mount lenses. But, really, both the Nikon and Canon cameras are capable of shooting wonderful images. While I love the improvements of the Z8/Z9 ( versus my former D850 and Z7ii), my working on my skills and technique as a photographer and understanding the capabilities of these wonderful technical marvels is probably the most important consideration. Someone better skilled and with a better eye than me will probably shoot images under the same circumstances with an old Nikon D810 that I would wish that I had taken with my more advanced camera. But, I keep practicing. 🙂

Thanks for pointing out the (negligible) advantage in noise performance for the R5. There is some misinformation (imo) being spread by a wildlife photographer on KZread (unintentionally I am sure) around this. He somehow thinks the Z8 has a 2 stop advantage. I tried to push him to try to replicate his findings (which would be genuinely interesting to me) but he refused unfortunately and cited what a back side illuminated sensor is instead...

It depends…. At 20fps the Z9 will have an advantage. To get full dynamic range out of r5 you’ll need to be a slower frame speeds using the mechanical shutter. I think r5 is better a highlight recovery, z8 better at shadow recovery. 2 stops is excessive.

I would not disagree that some RF lenses are fantastic. I would use a Nikkor Z S lens to compare against an RF though. EF lenses that Canon rated to work well with the 5DS are great on the R5 and other cameras with high MP. I couldn't take the R5 over one lens. The Z8 autofocuses my entire manual lens collection via TZM-02. It works so well that I ditched modern lenses for most purposes. And Nikon dont have a 2.0 28-70 or a 2.8 24-105. They don't have a control ring on the lens that gives my camera 4 dials compared to Nikon's 2 dials. Make my camera faster and easier to operate. Ok, that’s really a non-issue for me

Nikon has been really hitting it out of the park lately with their lenses.

@10:12 can you stop making your vogue/misleading statements like rolling shutter example? It’s only an issue when you shoot electronic mode which has plenty of other issues . When you shoot mechanical your stacked sensor is irrelevant👎

Hi! I‘ve taken over 250‘000 shots with my R5s. If you want full speed (20fps), you risk rolling shutter. In mechanical you are limited to 12fps if the battery is fully charged, afterwards it drops to around 9fps. I would indeed appreciate if comments here would stay nice and polite

I mentioned that this is an issue in the electronic mode. Maybe it was not clear enough for you
