This review helped solidify getting the LCD X 2021 and I'm very pleased. Wonderful to mix on and they're translating to speakers very well. New viewers of this vid need to know that the 2021 version is an improved version with lighter weight, better tuning (in the upper mids), new fazor tech, slightly wider soundstage. Highly recommended. Excellent vid.

I'm probably going to send in my lcd-3s for a refresh, the only distractions are the lighter weight and new driver tech, but perhaps the more modern driver tech will get me 85 to 90% of the way towards the performance of the x or the mx4. Greatly Informative Channel! Which would you recommend for both Mixing and Mastering, if you consider the fact that I'll be using it with; the iFi Zen Can and the Can Opener Crossfeed software: HEDDphones, LCD 4z, LCD MX4 or LCD X? Note: My concern is extremely detailed and accurate sound, NOT excitement. I'll use it to Produce, MIx and Master Beats and Vocals. My toughts: I'm inclined to go with the HEDDphones, cause it seems to be the best all around value for money when used with iFi Zen Can and Can Opener Crossfeed (I deduced that from watching several of your videos on the subject). But, it (the HEDDphones) also seems to be the least comfortable to wear compared to the design of the LCDs, the LCDs seem to cover and sit right in front of your ears better, and have a better, stronger and more durable build quality (I'd like to know if you agree with these assessments). Also, I noticed you said the LCDs are better at reducing Distortion, would you say they're better than the HEDDphones on that aspect? Thanks!

All four of those headphones are great (the HD800s rather than the HD800 anyway) in their own way. The X 2021 version LCD-X will probably be the easiest to get good mix translation with as its most like high end speakers, The MX4 has more detail in the mids (but is over double the price) The HEDDphone has an insane amount of detail for mastering, but is the heaviest while the HD800s is super lightweight, but doesn't have the transients of the heddphone.

Thomas Lcd-X is a bit more familiar and quick to get your head round for mixing. They are easy to drive from almost any interface. Heddphones have much more detail, but you really NEED crossfeed to get decent translation and for speed of mix positioning. They also need a very powerful amp, even if that is just an ifi zen can.

  • @auxorion

    1. Am I right in assuming that the LCD-X would be an ideal Mixing headphone, and the LCD-4/LCD-4Z ideal for Mastering - and that if you had both, you'd have the best of both worlds if you both Mix and Master? (or is the juggling act a bad idea?) 2. If I went about it that way, which one would be best, between X and 4, for when I am writing/producing/recording? (I know they're open-back, so I don't mean necessarily when Tracking vocals or whatever, but like when in the production phase of laying down tracks) Would the hyper-detail be the better choice for laying down higher quality tracks? Or would the 4's bigger soundstage be better for making macro "songwriting" decisions? (Basically, which would you prefer while still doing sound-selection?)

Mobius are surprisingly fairly good and detailed and well balanced in music mode considering they are closed back. However, they work best (and the only way you should use them for studio work) is via USB. Turn 3D on, headtracking off and dial the ambiance right down to 10 or so and the crossfeed is quite good... BUT They only work at 48K or 96K (without the waves NX) so you can’t do 44.1KHz sessions. :-( This is the dealbreaker for most people

I'd say that it would be borderline for HEDDphone. The Rack Apollo X's have got 50% extra power compared to the desktop models. You might well notice it squeezing transients and saturating when writing, especially when layering sub bass & kick at a decent volume. The racks definitely have enough headroom, though even then, running a balanced output amp (like the iFi Zen Can or THX 789) with a special cable from a 4.4mm or a 4 pin XLR socket would get better results.

Hi, I have an Audeze LCD-X and an Audient iD22 (which I only bought for mobil use). They don't work together at all!!! The headphone amp output impedance is too high for the 20 Ohm Audeze which results in a bad damping factor (headphone impedance/output impedance should be 8 or higher). So you definetetly need to buy an headphone amp with a lower output impedance for the Audeze. I have both, the SPL Phonitor 2 and Phonitor Mini which work great with the Audeze. As a DAC I currently use my Metric Halo ULN8 3D interface or an SMSL M500 DAC (which is really great for the money). The headphone output of the Metric Halo and the SMSL have also low impedance which works very well with the Audeze LCD-X. The SPL Phonitor brings in some additional smoothness which reduces ear fatigue and the crossfeed matrix which works like a hardware version of can opener. It is just night an day against the Audient iD22 headphone out which makes the Audeze LCD-X sound like an cheap, unbalanced and unenjoyable headphone. Also Audeze headphones might be easy to drive, you need to make sure you have an amp that works with this low headphone impedance - so also low amp output impedance and also enough power to control the membrane and make them sound the best.

X has a bit more detail than the clears, which are fairly close tonally to the LCD-2. The quality of the amp circuit on the antelopes are all very good, and if you mix up to 0dB, is probably loud enough for you, as there is some secret headroom left over at full gain. If you want more headroom / gain then Topping L50 or A90, Ifi Zen Can with balanced input / output cables, THX 887, spl phonitor one All without really breaking the bank.

Twin x will be fine, it’s got a great amp circuit for the x. Twin mk2 would benefit from a modest amp like an Ifi zen can driven from the line outputs.

Thomas the designer can almost do no wrong in my book. Both are great options. Yes, massively. A LOT more detail. Like going from a £4- 500 pair of speakers to a £3K set. The sub and bass definition is particularly sharper and tighter noticeable and the treble detail is another level. We have a video with all the optimum settings for LCD-1 that’s just in edit now. Used with canopener and an EQ to fine tune it, the translation is excellent.

The Audeze LCD-X is more comfortable and somehow it feels lighter than the Beyerdynamic DT 770. I can wear it the whole day, but its sound is not as flat as said. There is a steep deep around 4-5Khz. Good news it that if you use it with Sonarworks Reference 4, it is utter perfection!

I highly disagree with your statement about never using the "headphone out" of you interface. Everything depends on what quality d/a converter the unit has in it. For example, My UAD apollo solo(around 500USD) has a cleaner and more power output from the headpone out than quite a few "hi-fi headphone amps" that costs much more. Another awesome and affordable choice with top notch d/a would be the SSL2(solid state logic) audio interface. This one you can get for under 300USD. You'll be surprised by how much you can get out of some audio interfaces for so cheap. Don't let anyone tell you "audiophile headpone amps" are always better, they're not.

Actually, almost all premium dynamic drivers have lower distrotion than planar magnetic drivers. Companys that produce planars compare their drivers to same size average and cheap plastic dynamic drivers. But no Headphone with drivers that large use average plastic drivers. They use all sorts of materials including material mixes like the MDR-Z1R which has an ring of aluminium coated liquid crytsal polymer and an dome made of magnesium. And these produce significantly lower distortion figures than planar magnetic drivers. So the statement is not wrong, its just too general. If any company would be stupid enough to build large dynamic drivers out of plastic than yes, planar magnetic drivers would be superior. But no company does that, so its an comparison to non-existing techonolgy.

Why would anyone mix on a average soundstage headphone like LCD-X? Detail retrieval is also average… Focal Clear MG and HD800s are more resolving. I have owned one pair of LCD-X 2021 for about a year and I don’t get it… 🙈 why the hype? Frequency response?

My guess the planar magnetic detail retrieval is more true to the source signal (still not perfect), dynamic drivers detail retrieval can be better but more artificially generated by the dome/cone structures vibrations in motion.
