Welcome to another gear comparison on the channel! In this video, we dive deep into the world of amp capture technology, testing out three of the most popular platforms: the Quad Cortex, ToneX, and the Neural Amp Modeler (NAM). Get ready for an in-depth analysis of their performance and a surprising revelation!
In the modern age of digital amp modeling, there's a plethora of excellent options. But what I want to know is: which amp capture technology reigns supreme? To test it out, I've taken an amp capture of the same amp, captured with the same gear, by the same creator. The only difference, the captures were made with the Quad Cortex, ToneX, and the Neural Amp Modeler. Let's find out which one delivers the best results.
Starting with the iconic 1966 Marshall JT45 Crunch and a Benson Chimera captured by Amalgam Audio, we'll put the units through the paces. We'll first assess the raw amp tones, then start to introduce pedals. Because that's the big differentiator for me: most digital sounds great by itself, but once you add pedals to the system... Things really start to sound different. Pedal enthusiasts, this one's for you! Witness how each platform interacts with pedals using the JHS Moonshine + Big Sky combo. Explore the nuances of the Quad Cortex, ToneX, and NAM as they handle the pedalboard signal.
Finally, in attempt to eliminate bias, we'll do a blind test. There's a lot of hype and haters for the Quad Cortex, ToneX, and Neural Amp Modeler. Let's see if you can distinguish the platforms without knowing which is which.
At the end of the tests, we'll crown our king of the three; which amp capture modeler sounds best. Remember, in the grand scheme of things, the differences between these platforms might be negligible when integrated into a mix. I value your opinion - let me know which amp capture appeals to your ears the most in the comments below!

Its not in your head I did null testing with all these units and NAM @1k epochs is significantly closer to the source. Kind of funny since it's free.

Thanks for featuring our captures. This was very interesting to us to hear the differences in the hands of another player. All 3 are very solid platforms with small nuances in different scenarios favoring different use cases. All good choices. It would be good to point out that some of the differences account also for different type of captures compared here - e.g. DI in case of NAM and full captures in case of the other 2 platforms. Also the input gain on the QC seems to be quite a bit hotter. This shows the out-of-the-box sounds well. If one would compare all full captures or all DI + IR from an external loader, and the input gain levels would be leveled, the differences would be way more subtle.

Thanks for making these captures! And yeah, I did my best to try to keep the input gains the same across the platforms. On the Quad Cortex, I had to turn the unit’s input gain completely down to get it in the ballpark of the other two. So there wasn’t any further adjustment I could make there haha. All I can say for me, it came out about how I thought it would. Each capture sounded like a slightly different tint of the same, and that tint was reflective of each amp modeler’s slight coloration.

Tonex and NAM are software and required you to use your audio interface, as compared to the QC which has guitar input circuitry. You will find if you roll off or shelf the highs before hitting Tonex and NAM you'll remove the digital brightness. These sorts of things color perceptions!

I actually used the same interface to get audio from the quad cortex for that specific reason- granted the interface hits after the effect as opposed to before with the other two.

Ooooo did that update come out yet? I saw an announcement but I don’t think it’s released yet. At any rate, I don’t have any NDSP plug-ins to test it with haha. I wish it would run 3rd party plug-ins, since I’m a HUGE fan of the Valhalla delays and reverbs!

I think it would be really cool if you made a video on amp modeler tips. I’ve had my kemper for years and I feel like i’ve got a pretty good tone going, but i’ve always struggled getting good drive sounds. I don’t know how to explain it but amp modelers never sound completely natural to me - especially drives. They are always very digital and fake sounding to my ear, especially in the kemper. I know you’re not a kemper guy, but a video explaining that could apply to most platforms. just a thought!

Nice!!! And yes exactly, it’s not like the QC sounded earth shatteringly better than the free option. Which is still pretty crazy to me. I’ve heard talk of something called a Raspberry Pi? I guess it allows you to run the NAM software in a pedal format. I think if they were to release a true pedal dedicated to NAM, that would be really really cool-

TBH, I don't really care, but sure the QC sounds the best without a doubt and can easily be heard even with the KZread compression. IMO it is still not like a real amp but it is the closest we got for now. And thanks for the content man, everyone just stopped making content about the QC as soon as the hype died even though it is still an amazing unit.

@@JustinMuncy sure, same for me here, I don’t give into hypes, but I find the QC very practical, it’s the only unit that has the ability to download presets and captures straight from the cloud with your phone, that for me is what sold me, and then the large screen and rotating knobs. I was never really an effect units person until the quad cortex. I used to have an Ampero, but it collected dust, not because it was bad, but it wasn’t just intuitive for me to use, and when the QC came out, I was like I’m never falling for this crap again, but then after watching a few videos and saw how practical it was, and it checked all my wishes, sure it made sense to buy it as this was my dream modern musician lifestyle.
