Which 12ft Okuma Surf Rod Would I Recommend For Casting Bait?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I'll Compare My Favorite 12ft Okuma Surf Rods & What Reels I Use With Them!
Recently i had a good question from Arys Corbett. He wanted to know which 12ft Surf Rod by Okuma would i recommend that i've used. Of course a lot depends on the type or area you're working in & what species you're targeting. 2020 is the 25th Anniversary of Okuma & new equipment were ear-marked for this year. But due to the Corona Pandemic some of these releases were either delayed or benched, for now. So had to get them from retail establishments as they're first on the list.
I'm now aware of some of this years projects & releases. But i won't comment on them until i receive & test them in the field. The rods that i was asked to evaluate was the 12ft Longitude & Solaris. I have used the casting models but not the spinning models yet. Also the 12ft Cedros MH Surf Rod for spinners. This is my go to "inside" rod for reef species like Jacks & Bonefish. Finally the Rockaway Rods that Okuma developed for the Oregon Surf Casters for Sea Perch. A year latter the Nesika Surf Rods came out. Same blanks as the Rocks but different components to lower the cost.
I'll be showing some past reviews to demonstrate how these rods perform in the field. I'll also show the types & sizes of reels i've chosen from dozens of current choices. I also added my updated reviews to each style of Surf Casting Rods. I hope this review will help those looking for combinations that work. I spent a lot of time testing equipment & made suggestions to improve the experience of fishing. There's a lot of good fishing equipment out there. In all my years of fishing i've tried not all, but a lot. I'm still learning myself as every company has yearly new releases. I hope the time i've spent evaluating & suggesting improvements will help you choose the right combination for your game.

    Chris, I can't say enough good things about the Okuma Longitude rods; I own the 8', 9' and 12' versions. Nice fast action, light, and affordable. Like you, I'm a fan. I own an 11 ft Solara for my conventional Penn and Akios reels, and like it lots. It tamed a big bat ray last summer with ease. I own a Penn Battalion 12 ft XH, which is a really strong rod. It throws 8oz lead and big chunk baits with ease, but it's a heavyweight that is best left to soak shark and ray baits in a sand spike. Have you tried the Okuma Ulua 13 ft rod yet?

    The 13ft Ulua Rods are both very stiff. I use the MH for heavy shore casting/heavy sliding & it's really a H rating. The H is really a XH and more for sliding.

    Chris, Hope you can help me with this... I just ordered from Amazon a 12ft. Okuma Rockaway (Ra-S-1202MH: Spin 12ft, Med-hvy, 12-25lb). Got it for just $54.00 shipped when signing up for their credit card ($50 discount). I am a little concerned that it is not rated for more casting weight, just 1 to 4 oz. I think. Would shortening the tip end 8 to 10 inches increase the casting weight capacity? What do you think...? I plan to use it with a Daiwa BG 5000 reel, primarily fishing on BOTTOM with cut bait (mullet) to catch redfish (red drum) here on the Texas gulf coast.... Likely no lure casting... My bottom fishing rig usually consists of a 4 to 5 oz spider weight and a nice size chunk of cut bait, sometimes a double drop with two baits. Thanks, Robert R

    That rod is ok for lighter fare. If you need a brute force rod for spinners the Okuma 12' Rockaway HD is what you need (RHD-S-1202H). Rated for 6-16oz!

    I want to buy a okuma longitude 12 heavy cast. Can i put a spinning reel on it. I cant seem to find the spin cast version of this pole for a reasonable price. I would only be using this pole for bait fishing from the shoreline. Thank you very much!

    Yes, there's both C & S models in 12ft. MSRP @ $85 is surprisingly inexpensive! There's "talk" about the new surf rods next month at ICAST. I kinda know what's up but if you want to get it now np. A Blue Azores 8K/14K, Coronado CDX-65/80, or the Surf 8K would be a good match-up. For shore casting a spinning rig for sheer POWER you can't go wrong with the 12' Rockaway HD Rod @ $140. I'm currently outfitting mine with the Coronado CDX-80 @ $130. okumafishingusa.com/collections/rods/products/longitude

    I know this is a rod review, just wondering if you’ll do a review of Okuma’s whipping and dinking reels. Are the okuma reels easy to do maintenance like the Penn reels or a little complex like the shimano reels? I know in your past video’s you used shimano reels, now with your sponsorship you only use okuma. I think its hard to review brand comparisons cause you’ll sound bias, but which do you prefer between the both...for whipping reels?

  • @ScubaChris

    @ScubaChris

    Actually i don't think Penn has light whipping reels. More surf casting types. Daiwa & Shimano has nice whipping spinners, but the cost is high. Okuma has started catching up with Shimano thus the lower MSRP's. From here i can't say much as i know what's some of the ongoing projects are. I won't tell anyone don't use a brand of equipment. Every company has gear that stands out, & pieces that should've never seen the light of day. As a consumer you need to make your own choices.

    Scuba Chris agree, penn reels ( metal body) are a bit heavy. They do have a few resin body which are light. But im not a big penn fan. Im not too familar with okuma spinning reels, so im curious about them. Is the maintenance for service easy like penn reels? Or a little complex like shimano reels? But i do love okumas hawaiian custom rods (whipping). I see alot of mainland vidz on okuma, but their fishing is different from ours, so their review may differ. Your local and fish hawaii, so your review is good. What okuma reel would be good for whipping? More grubs, flies, and small lures?

    looking at your rig, what's the benefit of having a longer hook line compared to a longer lead line?

  • @ScubaChris

    @ScubaChris

    4 жыл бұрын

    If i'm fishing an area where i know i'm going to get hung up a lot, i use a longer lighter lead line. This way i'll only loose the lead if i get hung up & not my whole rig. On flat reef to sand i prefer a longer leader & a shorter light lead line. Also if the drop system is close to shore i use rocks as my lead.

    @@ScubaChris good idea with rocks. but whats the benefit of having your bait on the floor bottom when the hook could possibly get stuck or bait eaten by crabs?

    What is the best casting weight for the longitude

  • @ScubaChris

    @ScubaChris

    2 жыл бұрын

    If i'm surf casting close in, say within 50yd i use 3oz. Beyond that 4oz. If i need to "bomb" i use 5oz. I'm mostly using the H 12ft Longitude. Rod ratings are recommendations. I find every rod has it's own "signature" to it. Most are under-rated to prevent rod damage. You can tell when you cast what the blank does in your hand. Now the Longitude have stiff blanks and under load only the upper 1/4 of the rod flexes. Because of this i wouldn't recommend using all your might casting as the flex point is extremely defined in a small area. Now the Solaris is close in build & looks to the Longitude. The rod tends to share the load better than the Longitude. You can see & feel that load being distributed more evenly. Because of that i use 6-7oz on my 12ft H Solarices. This is why Okuma will put out the newest Solaris 12' H Surf Rod this year rated up to 16oz. But look at the Pros & Cons here. Right now i can use my 12' Solaris to cast heavier weights but distance is ok. On the other hand when i use my 12' Longitude with less weight the rod is better loaded with less weight & i can cast farther. But on a huge strike with weight behind it the Solaris will prevail. So match your gear to the conditions you expose it to & the species you target. These 2 rods have been around for a very long time for a reason. MSRP's are quite attractive as well. Good luck!

    The longitude is half the price of the cedros on Amazon. Is the cedros really worth the extra money or is the longitude good enough to catch roosters and jacks in Cabo.

  • @ScubaChris

    Honestly the Cedros is a better build. I fought a 5ft GT in on a 11ft Cedros w/a 8K original Azores on 50lb braid at night. But nothing is wrong with the Longitude. Between the 2 the Longitude has the sheer brute power thought the line rating is rated at 20-40lb. But if you want versatility and playing power the 11ft Cedros Surf CSX Rod CSX-S-1102MH is great, even though it's rated as a MH & the Longitude a H. @@gnick66 It'll work, just keep in mind you can't power the fish in. Keep your rod at a 45 degree angle during the whole fight and always keep a steady pressure on it. Use your palm more than your drag setting. Keeping your rod at a 45 degree angle & maintaining a constant drag pressure will eventually tire the fish, not you. If it was me i'd cancel that order & get the 11' Cedros if you have the time. But that's me. I still use that rod even today. I place my 5.5oz +$300 UW Spydro Cam on it till this day. Of all my breakdown Okuma Surf Rods i still trust that one over the rest. Light weight, compact, & proven hella strong! Good luck Nick66!

    My daughter fought and landed a 36” red 30’ off the beach on Panama City Beach on Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I have landed 2 30’ reds on same rod. 9’ okuma longitude. The rod has the the back bone to handle the beach monsters and enough flex to keep me in Gulf Kingfish all winter long even when I was getting ice build up on my guides on Alabama Gulf Coast.

    @@stevencalson7375 I have all the Surf Rods including the heavier HCS Custom, Longitude, Cedros, Rockaway HD & Solaris. The HD's are the newest & insanely powerful. The Longitude is the least expensive but i have no complaints since i'm still using mine. I do have all the Cedros as it's the Cadillac of the surf rods. No complaints as it's an obvious quality build! The Solaris should be identical to the Longitude, but it isn't. Longitude has the CX blank vs the IM6 blank of the Solaris. This gives the "bend play" of handling large fish. I still love my HCS Surf Rods! For travel it's in a padded case. I'd get the 13'3" over the 14'2" for travel purposes because of the reduced size. And it's not a cheapy mesh bag, it's a fully padded insulated quality bag! And it's free. No matter what you choose you'll be ok.
