I left Brooklyn in 1971. When I came back for a visit in 1973 the fabulous Automat and Ebinger's were gone, an early sign of the deterioration of American restaurants and bakeries nationwide. Oh for the days when you'd get a 15¢ slice of pizza at the front window of any of the dozens of pizzerias, fold it lengthwise and enjoy it as you walked down the street, not to mention the 12¢ hamburgers at White Castle.

Yup, was in High School, 1966, 12 years old and we'd wait, Flatbush and Nostrand to get the Rockway Park bus home. Always stopped in the small pizza place for a slice and coke, .25 cents.

My dad and I also left Brooklyn in 1971, when he married a woman from Astoria who still had 2 sons at home and had a larger apartment than ours.

My mom would take me here as she shopped throughout the fifties. She passed last year at 88 and I just liked this video, number 269 to do so - her lucky number! Thanks for sharing, it is a trip to reawaken such early memories. I will forever always remember the slice of kosher salami that the butcher would give me as soon as I walked through the door. Thanks again.

My Grandma and Aunt lived on Ocean Ave, a few blocks from King's Highway. As a California kid in the 1950s-early 70s, I got to visit a few times. I have the fondest memories of walking along the Highway, of the little built-in aquarium at the entrance to the elevated subway platform. You could look down the tracks while waiting for the D train and just make out the Empire State building. Brooklyn has such a capacity to get under one's skin, in the most wonderful way. I feel like a Brooklynite, even though it was my mom who grew up here. I recognize so many of the places in this video, and feel the nostalgia as if I had lived here. I especially loved the candy/cigarette stores with a window along the street. Thank-you.

I was in awe as a kid that you could see the Empire State Building from so many faraway places in Brooklyn, such as Manhattan Beach or looking down the middle of Coney Island Avenue from Kings Highway.

So many great memories flooding back, thanks. My earliest recollections (1955) were of living on 39th street and taking the trolley up and along Church ave. I miss knishes, the Bungalow Bar VS Good Humor war. Saw some Dodgers games too, way back when.

Great photos and great music! It was a better world back then.

I left Flatbush in 1972. Was born there and to this day, the fondest memories of my youth are from Flatbush. Back then, it was a great place (from a kid's perspective). Used to walk to school, leave doors unlocked, play outside (until the street lights came on 🙂), all with no worries. The best place for me at that time was a store called "Discount City" where we used to go buy Hot Wheels cars for 25 cents! Pizza, meatball subs and Chinese food was indescribably delicious back then. Burger King, McDonalds and Kentucky Fried Chicken were treats, not everyday meals because back then you ate in most nights of the week. Grocery shopping at A&P for REAL food and vegetables was also a thrill for a kid. Loved riding on the shopping carts around the store. I even remember when the milkman was a real thing and the milk came in a small basket with the wax tops. Probably the best thing was that people were so much nicer then as well. Great memories.

How about Lundy’s in Sheepshead Bay by the Rockaway ferries. And also Michelle’s for seafood on Flatbush Ave on the north side of Prospect Park. Some of the places I remember from the 50’s when I was a kid.

There's a few pics of Lundy's around the 3:16 mark. The main way I remember it was that you had to stand behind people who were eating to get a table. You had to pick the ones who were almost done. Then people would be standing behind you when you were eating and wondering if they're thinking "Hurry up and finish" like we were. I remember Michelle's too. It got lucky when those two planes crashed in December 1960, just missing it.

I grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. I was so wonderful to see all the different places we would go to to eat say after a movie. I worked in the White Castles you showed back in 1976. Loved watching, great job.

@@felipehernandez-pedroza8288 Sorry, just noticed this comment. There's two White Castle shots in this. I don't think either was the White Castle in SNF. Lots of locations were filmed in Bay Ridge, though, like Fisherman's Corner, across from White Castle, Lenny's Pizza in Bensonhurst where he ate the two slices at one.

Many thanks Matty for this compilation. In 1968 when the teachers went on strike, my mom gave me money so I could buy lunch for myself at 11 years old. My go-to place was Carsten's on Flatbush near Caton. I'd sit at the counter and order a burger, fries and Coke. It was delicious. Afterwards, I'd pop into Jahn's and buy some white chocolate bark to take back home to 70 Lenox Road where my parents lived for 27 years. Great memories inspired from your video.

I worked in Mays Dept. store in their Advertising Department in down town Brooklyn, my wife worked as a nurse in Brooklyn Hospital.

All my food remembrances of the Automat are of the cafeteria more than the "slot machines." I can remember that salisbury steaks were 45 cents and chopped sirloin steak was 65 cents.

Anyone who never went to Richard Yee's Chinese Restaurant on Ave. U in Brooklyn missed one of the best Chinese restaurants ever. The duck sauce was like guava jelly, the noodles were the large, thick kind and the dishes were fantastic. Great slideshow of old restaurants. I was hoping to see Dubrow's Cafeteria on Kings Highway and the one in the Garment Center in Manhattan. If it were still open, I'd be there 4 days a week.

I miss that Dubrow's too... I think we ate at that Chinese restaurant...we moved from 2330 Ocean ave when I was in the 6th grade at PS 255. Nathan 's yummy....had my first slice of pizza at Arco pizza on ave s. Miss candy stores and malted milk...the automats baked beans...clams in the half shell...knishes...the ocean. Left NYC in 1983 for Colorado. Dubrows was to the right...north? of the te amo... I used to ride my bike and wait for my father to come home from work ...he rode the elevated subway from midtown Manhattan

btw...loved the shots of the Red Apple Rest @ 4.04 along Rte 17 in Tuxedo, N.Y. ,fond memories of that place also....

my family left Brooklyn just shortly before the Dodgers did.We moved to the "country" in Rockland County which my dad knew of from shipping out of Camp Shanks for WW2 . what great days both in the country & on visits back to family in Windsor Terrace.....two great places to be a kid growing up in the 50`s & early 60`s.......thanks so much

Always went to Jahn's for ice cream for a special occasion. Those were the days!

My mother Rosemary co-owned the Bonaparte for its last 20 years nice to see. Ate in most of these places great memories. Lord’s bakery at the Junction was an old favorite. Thanks

My father owned Garfields Cafeteria. I remember working there behind the counter making sandwiches for the customers when I was in high school.

My dad drove the Church Ave bus. Caught my friends skipping school in front of the Doll Hospital. Stopped the bus right there. Hit me on the back of my head in front of my friends and I had to run back to class. Memories. Years later walking with my girlfriend, now wife, past the Doll House to Jahn’s on the other side of the street.

There was Fong Fong's Chinese Restaurant on Church Avenue one block up from Utica Avenue. Great Cantonese food--the Egg Rolls were luscious. And though not in Flatbush, it would be a crime not to mention the Knish stand inside the street entrance to the IRT on Atlantic Avenue. Those were so, so good.

Would have liked to seen the Chinese restaurant on Church ave between Nostrand and Rodgers and the restaurant on Rodgers between Church and Martense adjacent to Gilmore

Thank you so much for this great video. I grew up in Brooklyn during the 50s - 72, starting on 95th and Kings Hwy, 41st and Kings Hwy, and then to 35th between J & K right off Flatbush Ave. As a kid, my family and I ate in many of these restaurants. As a Midwood student, seeing the Campus Sugar Bowl on Hillel Pl really brought those memories back. Thank you so much. Like my late Dad always said, "One day you're gonna turn around and say, "Where did all the time go?'" It never made much sense when I heard that as a kid, but now at nearly 70, I'd like to find an answer to that question. Anybody have any idea what happened to Coronet Deli on Flatbush (near the Marine theater) or the College Deli on Flatbush (just past the junction)?

Born in Boston in 1960 this looks very familiar. People sometimes think Boston and NY are against one another, that's just sports, Yankees, redsox, hockey, football. There's no one more Yankee than Bostonians, I think of NY as Boston's big brother.

The Charcoal Chef (at 00:46) was not across from Erasmus, but it was on the same side of the street a block to the south of Erasmus. Nice to see Armondo's, Dave's, Howard Johnson's, the Automat, Senior's and Big Daddy's again.

In the video you can see the number on the Charcoal Chef - 946, which puts it on the west side of the street. Erasmus was/is 911 Flatbush - an odd number and on the east side of Flatbush. You might be thinking of King George's, a similar place (not shown).

I GREW UP IN FLATBUSH

Great video Great memories Red Apple was a go to restaurant from up the mountain. As a Boy Scout I went up the hill to Spruce Pond Boy Scout camp. Three weeks. Homesick first week. You could walk the road or climb the mountain thru the forest. Steep trail, but fun at that age.

I also remember Dubrow's on Kings Gighway

This was living in these years that's what I got to see a little bit of it living in New York real life affordable no one was trying to crush you know one was trying to rob you it was just a fun living one-on-one with people and nothing is perfect in this world but that was that time that was beautiful just living people have their little their little hidden money making whatever you had it was yours not everything being

Over fifty years ago, I was taken by my blind date to the Foursome Diner. Not exactly my idea of a romantic place to have dinner! Oh yes, Jahn's and Juniors. And Erasmus High School, where I took a typing class at night. And Lundy's for lobster dinners. And Nathan's at Coney Island where Jackie Onassis once ate a hotdog. The Beverly movie theatre where I watched movies with my friends in the children's section when we were in junior high. And Senior's restaurant. And Wetson's hamburgers near Prospect Park. Thanks for the memories!

Although the Foursome was one of the nicest diners in Brooklyn, there are more romantic restaurants.

Seeing old Flatbush brings back a lot of memories. We lived on Ocean Ave. My moms best friend lived across the street (Barry Manilow’s step mom). When my folks got divorced in 1971, I moved to Queens with my Mom and step dad. My dad had an apartment above a Greek coffee shop on Flatbush, but I can’t remember the name, but it was near Cortelyou Rd

I remember Jahn’s ice cream!

You've got some Manhattan photos mixed in here such as the Carnegie Deli, Luchow's, Katz's Deli and Howard Johnson's on Broadway and 46th Street, but I liked the video just the same.

Thank you so so much for this video, and my trip back to my earlier days! I graduated from Midwood HS in 1971 (Hudde JHS 1968) and went off to SUNY Fredonia. Since then, my parents had moved to Merrick LI and I haven't been back to Brooklyn since. I'm wondering if you or anyone else knows the name of the supermarket on Flatbush just past Kings Hwy, directly across from the Chinese restaurant Honam and the Marine movie theater. The Coronet (Jewish) deli up Flatbush on the same side as the Marine had the best thick french fries (in a brown bag with ketchup). Do the Jewish delis still have "club" (rolls) as an alternative to rye bread? I actually crave this because no matter where I go, nothing comes even close to the smell of walking into the deli and smelling that unmistakable smell, and even the club rolls smelled and tasted so special. Thanks again for this (almost tearful) great video!

The only Jahn's location that is still in operation is in Jackson Heights, Queens. Sadly: Jay & Lloyd's (Avenue U @ E.28th St.) closed, 5 June 2020.

I went to a Renaissance Fair a couple of times in Sterling Forest, I think.

Those were the days my friend and we thought they would never end....but they did...so sad.

I lived in Sheepshead Bay for 8 years, and Armando's Pizza right under the Sheepshead Bay station was one of the best hole in the wall pizza joints anywhere. You got off the train and the aroma was on the platform so no surprise that people would pack the inside and outside to get a slice after they came out of the station. However, what's with the photos from Manhattan?

Seems that there is about one comment every few weeks on the Brooklyn Board now. Before Facebook came along, there was lots more action there.

The entire kitchen staff came out to sing "Happy Birthday" but they all had very strong Italian accents. My birthday cake read, "Happi Brithday!" LOL!

Love it! So many great places. My uncle owned the Blue Bird Diner for a while and my mom worked the newsstand for a couple of years. (before my time in the 70s until I was a little girl in the 80s) Then we moved down the block from the Mill Basin Diner for the next 30 years. That same block of stores also had Mr. Tang, which later became Prima Pasta. When Yoshi opened I was always there. Loved their food.

Dubrow’s was on E 16th St near the Avalon theatre and the D train.

Across the street, underneath the opening of the Rainbow Shop, the Quotations used to hit some notes (circa 1958 - 1963).

You change the scenes too fast for us to study the pictures. I lived in Brooklyn from 1949 to 1971. My wife from 1957 to 1971.

I could have stared at the Ebinger's Blackout cake all day! It was the favorite dessert at our house for years. IMHO, there has never been a better chocolate layer cake, nor has there ever been a better cheesecake than Junior's Original. I left Brooklyn in 1970, and a friend recently sent me a Junior's Original--48 years later and it was every bit as delicious as it was back then. So glad they didn't "improve" it!

@Anthony Dipasquale Yes, I know. I bought it as soon as it was published (owned a bookstore at the time). Sadly, I'm diabetic and much as I'd love to bake the wonderful, yummy cakes and pastries I enjoyed while growing up in Brooklyn, they are now on the forbidden foods list.

I remember there was a JAHN’S ice cream parlor in the Bronx-on Kingsbridge Road off Fordham. I remember seeing the menu. I never got to eat there because it got completely destroyed by fire.

I used to eat at that Jahn's when I attended Hunter College in the Bronx class of 1970. When did it burn down ? Is Alexander's Dept store still there? Ever visit Edgar Allen Poe's little house ?

I've been to some of those places, but certainly not all of them.

Does anyone remember the pizzeria on King's highway by east 19th St? Was it Bella Donna? Near Carvel. It was next to a candy store I remember. This was in the 70's.

My gramp and his friends hauled Christmas trees from Maine to queens then we went all over with them 1 time a year be Flatbush but gramp oldest did it. I was 22 28 years ago I was sent with that load wow queens then my last was flat bush . Got home told the boss he laughed and said that's where you separate the men from the boys gramp I bet 50,000 trees he delivered to New York over years. Dee's nursery on corner in queens. Nice people

F Y I defarras pizza store is located on AVE J and E, 15th Street in the midwood section of brooklyn not Flatbush I know this because I used to live on Argyle Rd between Newkirk and Forster Aves. And I took the subway from Newkirk plaza to Save J to eat there by the way, I knew the owner, Dom he had the best pizza in Brooklyn and his pizzaria was zaget rated.

I know I made a typo about DiFara's. I went to 217 and knew a lot of people who lived on Argyle between Newkirk and Foster. Unless you went to Midwood, most people think of everything in Midwood, Kensington, Parkville, Ditmas Park, etc. as Flatbush

That would be me. Just a typo as I've been there a few times and know both areas well. Another thing I need to fix if I have a version 2.0 along with the missing Dubrow's pics.

One of my favorite spots was a West Indian joint on Flatbush and Parkside,right on the corner,jerk chicken,roti aaah man

Just about all of the restaurants here were from a time when there were no West Indian restaurants and no one would have hears of jerk chicken.

There were 3 of them on the East 16th St. corners of the BMT Brighton Line subway stops at Avenue J, Avenue M, and Avenue U. The one in the video is at M.

That was taken in 1977, the Ave J & Ave U stores were closed, that was the oldest at the time, You can see on the side is says " Steak Place'...worked there for 6 months, Cooky's was a great place to work...

Great photos but I personally wish they went slower so I could study them.

Thanks! You could hit the pause button or the "k" key to make it pause when you want to. The video is five minutes long now, so if I made each pic last another ten seconds each, the video would be 20 minutes.

Garfield's closed in 1971 and became a Chase bank. It's been that ever since.

Haha. New York is probably the only state in America that eats better now than it did 50 years ago. In the 50s and 60s nys food was all processed, produced on intensive factory farms and had no flavor unless it was full of additives and spices (which was often the case). Nowadays millenial and gen x nyers are discovering organic in addition to stonemill, raw and grass fed. The lufe expectancy will go up!

I lived in Sheepshead Bay when the photo of Armando's Pizza was taken. It was right underneath the Sheepshead Bay station, and every time you got off the train, the smell of the pizza would lure you down from the platform. It was a true hole in the wall pizza place, but the pizza was outstanding, and it was always busy. After all, it was really difficult to get off the train and not want to stop and have a slice once that aroma ht your nostrils. You show a lot of places that are not in Flatbush, but still in Brooklyn, so it's okay, but why are you showing places in Manhattan?
