WHERE TO STAY IN BUDAPEST: A DISTRICT GUIDE -- True Guide Budapest
The city of Budapest covers more than 500 square kilometers. It is split down the middle by the River Danube, with the residential and hilly Buda on the west side, and the commercial, flat Pest on the east side of it. Budapest has 23 districts ("kerület" in Hungarian), which are numbered clockwise in widening circles (like Paris' arrondissements). It is easy to find the district from the address of a location, as the two middle digits of the four number zip code indicate it (for example: zip code 1056 means "5th district").
I created this district guide to help you choose where to stay in Budapest depending on the atmosphere and your travel style.
DISTRICT I.: romantic / first time visit
this is the castle district
DISTRICTS II., III., OR XII.: to enjoy greenery and relax
these are all on the hilly Buda side (Rózsadomb, Óbuda, Svábhegy)
DISTRICT V.: the downtown, ideal for business or for families with smaller kids
the city centre (Belváros)
DISTRICT VI.: on a budget and/or to enjoy the culture of the city
this are is called Terézváros
DISTRICT VII.: the Jewish neighborhood but also has great nightlife
this are is called Erzsébetváros
DISTRICTS VIII. AND IX.: cool but perhaps rough neighborhoods
they are called Józsefváros and Ferencváros
DISTRICTS IV. AND X.: they are mainly lower middle class residential and industrial districts
they are called Újpest and Kőbánya
DISTRICTS XI., XIII., AND XIV.: primarily upper middle class residential
district XI. is called Újbuda (on the Buda side), XIII. is Újlipótváros and XIV. is Zugló.
ALL OTHER DISTRICTS (XV., XVI., XVII., XVIII., XIX., XX., XXI., XXII., XXIII.) are further out from the city

I am a proud local Hungarian living in Budapest.
I was born and have lived in this beautiful city, Budapest for decades. I am in love with it - and not because I haven’t seen anything else. I am a seasoned traveller and I have also spent many years living abroad. However, my heart (and wife, and jobs and goulash soup and lángos) have pulled me back to my birth town. I love this city and know it inside out.
If you are fed up with the formal (and often wrong) recommendations of guide books, then follow my channel to find advice from a real local. I give you practical tips, show you cool spots and help you avoid tourist traps.
I live and love Budapest, I want to share my tips with you.

Thanks for this informative video. Really appreciate your efforts. Keep producing such videos. So far, I've only been there once, but I fell in love with Budapest instantly!
Excellent video. I'll be visiting next week and this helped get some ideas going.
Thank you for explaining how to determine the district with the numerical address. It's very helpful.
Great overview of Budapest, thank you 🙏
Excellent video! Thank you!
It was useful to me and I thank you. In fact, I wish you had gone through it slower and maybe have put labels with sight names or street names of the many nice places you were showing in the video. You should make videos like this for all districts (one episode per district) because you have a lot of knowledge to share. Thanks!
Thank you so much . The video was helpful. :)

Thank you very much! Lovely video just counting the days before living there. Once I find a nice flat I'll share some news here

Thanks!
A helpful video. I am also looking for a place to stay around district XVI-XVIII.
This was great, thank you. It definitely confirms that I made the right decision choosing Budapest over Prague. This seems like a much more authentic city with real varied neighborhoods.

Hi, It is a really very helpful video. I will be in Budapest for a year. My office will be in District XI. I like the peaceful and green place. Which place do you recommend considering less transportation (mostly by walking)? Thanks
Very helpful! Thank you! I am going to see the Hieronymus Bosch exhibition at the Fine Arts Museum. What's the best place to stay? Is safe to book through Airbnb?
Great video, thanks for the valuable information. I visited Budapest twice, first while the communist was there. Secondly, after the freedom from that regime. I would like to go soon and visit with the information from your excellent video. Thanks again, Cassie, from Dallas, TX
Great video.which district do you recommend as investment. For rent
Reminds me of Vienna, only Metro in Budapest ,buy ur ticket 👍👍👍
I enjoyed your video,I didn’t realize there were so many districts in Budapest-i was born in 1947 in Budapest I would like to know what district was in effect then, there was only two hospitals in Budapest at that time, any information would be helpful as I am trying to get my lost birth certificate to obtain my Hungarian passport, I live in the US. thank you for any information ❤
Would you recommend district 7 or 8 for a first time solo traveler? I can't decide which one
thanks for wonderful input . we are visiting ur beautiful city soon . my wife has some mobility issues . pl suggest areas which are best in terms of tram and bus network . we would like to stay close to a tram/ bus stop for ease of transport. Metro doesn't help since lot of stairs are involved . pl help with ur suggestion
Personally, I think that Budapest is rather safe, but I always keep in mind that I have to watch out my belongings wherether I go to. I stayed in district II during my first trip and I really loved the area. Then, I stayed in district VIII (near Corvin-Negyed metro station) and it was fine. I am going back to Budapest next Spring and am just trying to figure out in which district I am staying in. Your video is really helpful and I have learned many useful tips on Budapest. Thanks for your recommendations !
Beware of apartment scams especially if there is a last minute change to that originally booked.
Can I pay for bus 100E with credit card or euro or not ?
Uram a csikágó a 7.kerületben van annak is a külső része, nem a 8.kerületben van. Ne vezesse félre a külföldieket kérem
Would you say Hungarian's are friendly? Met someone who was living and working in Budapest for about a year, and he said the locals are very rude. Mentioned that to a Taxi driver and he smirked a little.............
Fun fact Budapest is Bigger than NYC
Haha u say district XXI is middle class u r funny. When I went there it was one of the poor area of budapest I saw
Fix ur microphone man !!!
