Where to Put Your Carbon Monoxide Alarm | HouseSmarts Radio

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

There are many things that are crucial to Lou Manfredini and the HouseSmarts team, but nothing more so than home safety. One of the most basic areas of home safety is making sure you have carbon monoxide and smoke alarms in your house. It is important that your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are positioned properly. Recently on HouseSmarts Radio on WABC in New York, this caller was wondering where she should place her carbon monoxide detector in her two-story home. home.
If you are like this caller and only have one alarm to place in your home, you should place your carbon monoxide detector in the hallway right outside of your bedroom. With the chemical makeup of carbon monoxide, it does not matter whether you place the detector higher up or lower on the wall. Lou strongly recommends having multiple carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors placed on various levels and rooms of your home to have all bases covered. Home safety alarms are an inexpensive purchase that can quite literally save your life! And while we are on the topic of home alarms, regularly check your alarms to make sure they are working properly and update the batteries. Stay safe everyone!

Carbon monoxide is not CO2 as your onscreen text says; it’s CO.

Carbon monoxide is a little lighter than air, so it will actually rise. That means you can place CO detectors anywhere from a few feet off thr floor, up to the ceiling.

Its not the same chemical weight as the, "Air we breathe", air is 78% nitrogen, which in air stably bonds to N2(28.02g/mol) versus CO which is (28.04g/mol). I dont really care, its negligable, but in a lab test if I wanted to detect small changes... Id place it lower down. You do you!

A firefighter told me that carbon monoxide detector should go at the bottom of the wall, because by the time it reaches higher up on the wall, we would all be dead already. I’m so confused.

Either the battery is low charge - or alternatively it might mean that the detector itself is at its end of useful life which is usually 7-10 yrs old dependant on the manufacturer

@@estrellacasias Ah okay gotcha, then I would swap the battery and if that doesn’t work, then perhaps the unit is faulty. Definitely try new batteries first as it’s the simplest and cheapest option and hopefully it will resolve the issue 🤞🏼

CO2 is carbon Dioxide, "Di" meaning two oxygen atoms...different than CO which is carbon Monoxide. Mono means one. Carbon Monoxide is slightly lighter than air. You are correct that dioxide is heavier but that's not what the detector is for.
