    Thank you for this video! So many others just focus on what baskets and containers to buy and how to take everything out, decide what you want and then put back with no tips on where to put them! We bought a house that was built in 1954 and there is virtually zero counter space inside my work triangle. The layout is atrocious and small. We want to remodel, but I don't know where to start! Your video really helped. I will be considering the triangle now!

    Mine is also a 1954 house is like an L shaped galley and it's terrible. I can't even make a triangle in it! We remodeled and added cabinetry where it could fit but it's nowhere near the more modern kitchens, especially those with a huge island to store everything in lol

I will have to make some adjustments but I have learned so much from this video and know what I need to relocate! I moved in over a year ago, but had so much clutter from my last home that it was a constant shuffle of unused stuff from one area to another. For awhile I felt like I needed all the gadgets and 20 different sizes of storage containers. I have been decluttering for ever. But finally things are fitting better and more organized. Now I just need to troubleshoot where things will live that makes sense for me and my husband. Almost there...

    Good question! I try to find a space in a nearby hallway or wall in the kitchen where we can build shelving or put in a tall shelving unit to store food ... gotta maximize that vertical space!! Try and maximize the space in your cabinets too and find space for food storage, but often in a small kitchen all the space is used for dishes and cooking tools.

    The basic rule is what ever you use often should be easiest to get to ... so infrequently used dishes can go out of reach whether that is super high, or super low. I'm like you, I hate to bend down to get things! And with kids sometimes you want things out of reach... so it's ok to keep making adjustments!

    Thanks so much for your video. I’ve been struggling to gain assemblance in my awkward kitchen layout and as a renter it’s made things that much harder with actual storage within the cabinets and the fridge/freezer-I don’t know what the builder was thinking...probably has never cooked a day in his life, or put away dishes! Lol! I will be checking out your Pinterest board next! One thing I wanted to mention/ask is about the under the sink area which is another issue I’ve come up against. It’s next to the dishwasher, has a large garbage disposal and gets EXTREMELY HOT! I refuse to put any type of harsh chemicals especially that are in plastic bottles in an area that gets so hot-it’s literally hotter than the cabinets next to the stove. Any suggestions here? Also any suggestions on areas to put cooking oils and spices that are not on top of and right next to the stove? In an effort to not have oils go rancid and spices bad as well. Thanks!

  • @KatherineLawrenceCPO

    @KatherineLawrenceCPO

    5 жыл бұрын

    My theory is that the guys who design closets and kitchens have never used them! I've seen some pretty bad designs! I agree about that under sink area, sounds dangerous. This is not really an organizing tip, but have you thought of using natural kitchen products like plant-based stuff, white vinegar, baking soda etc? Otherwise, you can declutter as much as possible and get a small cleaning caddy to put in the bathroom or laundry area. Oils and spices can go in an upper kitchen cabinet on a turntable (lazy susan) so they don't get lost in the back of the cabinet. Keep checking the Pinterest boards and post photos at facebook.com/groups/mydailydeclutter/

    Outstanding! Thank you so much for this video!! We're moving in 2 weeks and I'm not certain where I'm going to put things. Although this video is very helpful, I'm still having a bit of trouble. My new kitchen is a galley kitchen but it has TONS of storage. Which is marvelous...but hard to figure out lol. 🤷‍♀️ There are 67 cabinets/drawers! 🥴 I REALLY could use your opinion on this. I have pictures of it and it's technically still listed on Realtor, where it has a 3d walk-through feature that you can see the whole kitchen with the peninsula cabinetry below and above it. I truly hope you still monitor the comments on here. 🤞🏻 Again, thank you for this incredible video!! I hope to hear back from you soon! 🫶🏻

    This video was really helpful! I'm trying to plan out how and where to store everything in my new house and wanted to do it "right" this time. One thing I have always struggled with is where to put the coffee and tea station... it tends to end up in the main prep area because it is a high frequency use appliance but then it cuts into the space that i have for food prep.. what do you normally recommend for this type of dilemma?

  • @KatherineLawrenceCPO

    @KatherineLawrenceCPO

    3 жыл бұрын

    Sometimes if the counter is deep enough I can push the coffee maker to the back and still have usable prep space in the front, plus add mug hooks for extra storage. Otherwise, unfortunately you just have to choose! In general I think coffee and tea stations are easier to set up in another location then all of your cooking prep tools...

    Kitchen aids are tough to store if you do not have a designated LARGE base cabinet for storage as they are so heavy. Many of my clients keep them on the counter year-round, usually in a corner. You can also put them on a heavy duty rolling cart if you have more floor space than counter top space. Either way it's always a challenge!

  • @KatherineLawrenceCPO

    If the items are small, it's best to put them in a container so they don't get lost in the cabinet. If they are large , it's best to limit the total number of items in the cabinet. I think a kitchen like the one you are describing would have a lot of wall mounted, open storage within arms reach. It may look a bit cluttered, but things would be easier to access.

    Great question! I prefer to set-up wall storage or heavy duty shelving for food pantry items vs using the kitchen cabinets because of how deep cabinets are... search around the kitchen area or adjoining rooms for wall and floor space... Large appliances should fit on either a deep shelf or deep bottom cabinet... Unfortunately a lot of appliances end up permanently on the counter as that is the only option...

  • @chris...9497

    I rent a studio apartment with a galley kitchen along the left wall of the path leading to the 'livingroom/diningroom/bedroom with apartment entrance and sole window facing each other at opposite ends of the entire apartment. Galley kitchen, so no 'work triangle'. I've worked as both a woodworker and a drafter/designer for several cabinetmaker companies, so I know how to lay out a kitchen generally. So here is my conundrum... The lefthand run of my kitchen is as follows: Apartment entry (door), hinge-adjacent wall (narrower than the door), fridge, 16"W countertop (partially depth-filled with a necessary breadbox), range (4-burner electric), 21.5"W countertop (mostly depth-filled with a 20"W MW), sink, 16"W countertop, terminating in a knee wall. The right side of the path through (the walkthrough to the livingroom) runs as follows: Entry station (3.5ft x 3.5ft footprint; drop zone, shelving; open bathroom door serves as a 'wall' and has an overdoor 4-prong hanger for outerwear), bathroom doorway (I live alone, so don't need it closed; doorway faces stove), 14"W wall space (filled by tall shelving unit for nonperishables), closet door (inside of door is fully-fitted with a hanging shelving unit for canned goods), 16"W wall space (filled by a 7-shelf corner unit for storing kitchen appliances such as crockpots & Instant Pots), at wall end the livingroom opens up (I have a tension rod across the very wide opening into the kitchen/livingroom hung with a partition curtain that also serves as a back to the corner appliance shelving. I have added a nice kitchen cart with wheels that can quickly be folded and set aside or rolled over to block the closet door (5 seconds to fold and set aside, but a minimum 15 minutes to unload then extra time to work out where to put the offload). It has two hinged shelves below the top, so I tend to use it as more than temporary storage (still working out how to best manage that). While the cart provides me the largest work space, it also blocks things no matter where it is rolled to (usually blocks access to the sink); there isn't enough walking space to move it where it's not blocking something else, so it's a necessary nuisance to live with. What's worked best for me is conceiving of the space in terms of Use Zones. The entire point of the Work Triangle is to work out how to minimize effort, mainly in terms of steps; implementing Use Zones is the same basic arrangement, made to concentrate tools and supplies nearest the spot where they will be utilized. So I have a Cooking Area, a Beverage/Sandwich Area, a Food Containment Area (dishware, flatware, drinkware, serving plates, prep bowls, storage containers, etc), Household Supplies Storage, and so forth. Still, though I'm basically cooking for one (a pet doesn't impact things all that much), I've still had to constantly question what I need to keep and what I have to let go. I recently gave up a beautiful hand-cranked solid metal Italian pasta maker (25 years, never used it once). And I'm about to donate my full collection of cake/pie prep supplies (always wanted to try cake decorating, but I have no social life, after Covid people don't socialize indoors, and besides I'm prediabetic and hate sugar substitutes). I may soon give up the Asian recipe supplies, except for the shelf-stable ramen and yakisoba packages, maybe even the cast iron wok & most of its accessories (already gave up the large and small bamboo steamers). It's a combination of space-saving and accepting that ambition never overcame habit; I'm just simplifying my life. I still don't have enough room for what I own or store, and I really don't know how to better utilize the kitchen space I have. Besides not being able to make holes in the walls or do anything 'permanent', there is no wall available to put ANYTHING on. I believe I've maxed out all my options in the circumstances I find myself. Any suggestions? Concerning food storage container storage... The one area in my postage stamp linear kitchen that has generous space is the 2-door wall cabinet above my sink and dish rack. Most of my handling of food storage containers is usually occurring at the sink; that's where it's filled (before washing the cooking or eating vessels), emptied (before warming, cooking or serving), or being washed and dried. So, I store my food storage containers in my Dish Cabinet, above the sink.

    Are they like these? My favorite way to make that upper space accessible is to use three 10-inch lazy susans on each shelf and a bin at the top. Should be next to the sink and/or close to the dishwasher for easy put-away. You can stash glasses only used for entertaining in a dining room or bar area or some other out of the way place if you do not use them everyday.

    I know right? Kitchens are so important!! I spend so much time in mine especially now that I'm cooking so much from home and the farmers markets are open. What type of kitchen layout will you have? I do hope to do many more kitchen organizing videos! My typical suggestion is to create space using walls and adjacent rooms or hallways to maximize your space. so you may have to use a few hacks to give the illusion of having a u-shaped kitchen.

    This was helpful & logical. Thanks. My kitchen does not have a triangle. The sink, the dishwasher & the stove are on the same side. The fridge is on the opposite side, directly across from the stove. I never thought about it but I guess it's a small kitchen. I am drowning in clutter, suffocating in stress. Not exaggerating. Not just the kitchen but it's a good place to start trying, I guess. I have a few questions I hope you can answer, please. Where do you store your food? Do you store anything but spices there (aside from obvious refrigerated items)? I keep dry goods & canned goods in some of the cabinets but I never know how they should fit in with the organization of my kitchen. Also, where did you get the small display shelves on your cabinets that are either side of the window over the sink? I have wanted those kind of shelves in that position for ages but I can't find them. Thanks again for the suggestions & tips. Take care.

    Keep up with your decluttering efforts!! When I get stressed, I rearrange things in my space, it’s like a meditation😆 You can even play some music while you do it. I’m blessed to have a closet style pantry where I keep dry goods and few infrequently used appliances. But when my clients do not have a separate pantry, we find a spot to set up food storage by adding a shelving system somewhere. Look for any empty wall space even if it is in an adjacent hallway or room, since you will probably need all your cabinet space for kitchen items. Those display shelves were already in the kitchen when I moved in. I’ve never seen a kit or anything, but I imagine a handyman or carpenter could install them 🤔

    We had a really nice rental except all kitchens in these types were galley. Ours was an L shaped. Dish washer sink corner stove refrigerator. What was sticking inside our kitchen? The door/ coat closet. If they just put shutter doors on the other side we would have a big pantry. So since we had an extra room and closet we made the door closet a pantry. The kitchen had linoleum and the hallway had tile but this square closet had installed short carpet that didnt match anything in the house. So we got a piece of linoleum and cut it to fit so as to have a wipeable surface and we put in a closetmaid wire shelf small system and put all of our dry canned goods and step stool in there. It worked out great. We put sauces like tomato anything you cook with, in cabinet next to stove and spices to the cabinet to right of stove. We had a 2 door upper cabinet. And we put dishes there and on the top shelf casserole dishes etc. And above dishwasher there was a one door cabinet where we put glass ware on lower shelf and large tupperware on 2nd shelf, there was a third shelf ice bucket glass ice bucket. Wine glasses. We kept frying pans in oven and pots n pans i dishwasher. We kept silver trays and punch bowls and stuff like that in garage where door was next to fridge. Bakeware went in cabinet next to stove lower and tupperware small. And flour sugar brown sugar cake decorating stuff in those two upper cabinets above Stove.

    I think most people aren’t fortunate enough to have a over the counter cooktop, so we do not have the extra storage space under the cooktop, as well as having small kitchen spaces. Particularly, I have deep corner bottom and upper cabinets that I am not able to maximize because of the difficulty of reaching that deep and even if adding shelves, in trying to get an item out it would knock down everything on its way when pulling it out. Just trying to describe the dilema relived my frustration. Thanks

    I would either put a few large items up there that you use infrequently OR if you want to put something up there that you access frequently I would put it in a bin, and then just pull the bin down to access the smaller items. In my upper corner cabinet on two shelves I use 3 lazy susans on each shelf to access spices and then a bin on the very top shelf for extra spices and bulk items.

    I consider my crock pot a seasonal appliance, so most months its stored in the pantry, then on the counter during high use times (Thanksgiving thru January). Water bottles can be tricky because the sizes are weird. If they are used everyday and fit in the "everyday glasses" area then keep them there... but often families have dozens of these so they need their own bin in a lower cabinet near plasticware... I store a few with my sports gear / lunchbox if they are for that specific use...

    My kitchen is too small. 4 girls and 1 tiny apartment. We have a pantry with 3 shelves and a huge space on the bottom that my roommates have full of random crap but we can only reach the bottom shelf without a chair. A small cupboard that’s too high to reach the top 2 shelves without a chair but it’s so tiny, the spices and baking “powders” take up almost all of the space. A tiny cupboard above the stove that is too small and weirdly shaped to fit really anything and we can’t reach it without a chair, so I put baggies up there. A huge shelf above but behind the refrigerator that we can’t get to. A shallow drawer and 2 deep drawers beside the stove. We try to keep silverware in the shallow drawer but it’s too small for the dividers, so things slide around and I keep the cooking utensils in a vase on the counter. We keep pots, pans, bowls, casserole dishes, colanders, and strainers in the deep drawers. The little drawer under the stove doesn’t open and it’s been stuck for a long time. We have a cupboard above the dishwasher but the door doesn’t shut and it’s wide enough for 2 sets of plates and we keep plates and saucers and bowls stacked on the bottom shelf and glasses on the middle shelf but we can’t reach the top shelf without a chair, so we don’t use those glasses. We have a small and uneven shelf above the sink with mugs but it looks like it’s about to fall down and it’s too high to reach. We have a shallow drawer beside the sink that I try to keep towels and oven mitts in. We have a cupboard under the sink that has a lot of space and I try to keep cleaning supplies and the fire extinguisher there but my roommates put baggies and dishes and towels and everything else there. We have a closet where I try to keep the trash but my roommates want it to be empty except for trash bags. I keep reusable containers and appliances in our entertainment center in the living room because there’s no space in the kitchen. It’s stupid.

    I explained the kitchen in your maximizing space video. So like your kitchen you have nothing above your stove top and the house next door was remodelled. I would bust out the upper cabinets above the breakfast bar. Or reverse the backing and put sliding glass doors or glass doors into family room where there is a wet bar sink already between kitchen and laundry muddroom. And put bar ware up there and glass pitchers and ice bucket. Platters Crystal Vases have it lit from inside. And since it is too high float it down from ceiling on four pole pegs mid century mod look. And/or that 3 cabinet spaces and I would ether shorten shorten bar to 2 stools or leave it at 4 stools. And bust out dwarers in kitchen and create a shallow pantry there that faces into kitchen all the way up to ceiling with double doors and fold out doors with shelving. Then instead of lower cabinet I cant reach make the double door space long dwarers for pots and pans. The space to the sink under I would reverse to family room since it is unreachable and put two doors and slide mount shelves for a game cabinet and party supplies. A new dishwasher that works. And next to that is the corner and then freestanding stove/oven, where most houses have the lazy suzan. We would have to have one of those S trains installed. You pull and it snakes out. Or close off the dead space next to dishwasher and make it a narrow cabinet with two slidemount trays for food or pots n pans.On left of stove upper side, i like the shallow cabinets because nothing gets lost or shoved to the back or falls over. But we need to lower them because we can only reach the bottom shelf dishes and bowls and we cant really reach the 2nd shelf where we have glasses plastic tumblers coffee cups and water bottles. Got to get it with a big spoon. I would maybe make a spice cabinet there lowered same size as dwarer and cabinet below. And put two open shelves and take this cabinet out. On right side of stove is identical cabinet which I would lower and put dishes there. I would leave fridge and just add slides to the cabinet on its left. And house small appliances there. Popcorn maker, blender juice, food processor, waffle iron, crock pot and rice cooker. I would move coffee maker to the wet bar and coffee cups and mugs. Cocoa, coffee all that over there. There is a drawer and cabinet for all that. And i would move cans from dish cabinet and this 5 shelf narrow pantry to new pantry! And water bottles would be on floor in there and we would have a bin for potatoes and one for onions in there. The fridge and stove is white so dishwasher should be white too. The cabinets are dark walnut, i would paint them white and put glass handles on them. And to the right is the dining room on other side of stove wall. And there is a pocket door. I would make it framed frosted glass with Kitchen or something stenciled or etched on. Regrout tiles or have granite tiles. And new garbage disposal. A new porcelin sink farmhouse or very modern. And high curved faucet.
