"and I'm DONE!" ..... said anyone that's ever began picking vintage glass and then not been 'done'. :D Check out the Super Tak 35/3.5 .... not as fast obviously, but it's got something very, *very* special to its rendering and it's far cheaper. I like'm fast as well.... Took me a while to get past that. There are some cases where the other properties trump the speed ... I think this is one. Check out some Flickr shots of it or whatnot... it's just got something to it. :)

Just good old fashioned Takumar love. It's got (the 35/3.5) that vintage rendering to it, but with microcontrast (not necessarily sharpness) that is nearly modern looking... and the two combined are just, delicious. Can't wait to see some 85/1.8 results though - that's one I've never plunked down for... someday.

Thanks for the great video Mark. I picked up a minty Takumar 85mm 1.9 yesterday at an antique store but it was part of a package where I had to take a Pentax Spotmatic with a Chinon 55 1.7 for $115. I haggled just a tiny bit and got it all for a hundred. I tried shooting with the 85 adapted to my XT1 today but I couldn’t get anything past 20 feet sharp - as you probably know M42 lens mount designs can present some adapter challenges but by adding, flipping and reassembling adapter components I can eventually get them all to work right. I also have a quality speed booster adapter as well to make it shoot more like a full frame set up but the shots I often take on the water typically need some distance and the 128mm equivalent on my APSC may work out favourably. I’m so happy I found such a fantastic lens.

My pleasure mate, they're a lot of fun! I'm surprised you guys don't have stuff like this. The US is like the LAND of cool historical things and with so much in the way of epic filmmaking/photographic history there must be some local organizations you can find? I had to really dig to find these guys, but if we have them in Toronto you MUST have them in a city near you/New York city no? Check some vintage lens for video/photo Facebook groups in your area. I Think they're all hiding in plain sight. ;)

Thanks man! Ya these are just so dynamic and fun to cut. The Pure imagination intro just felt right. Funny enough I shot the piano at my mother in law's and just match framed the action lol. The piano stuff was shot like 3 weeks ago and I wasn't even going to use it until I put it into the cut and felt it just worked lol. The black and white high contrast was just to match the colour temp, the lighting was so different ;) But don't tell anyone! You should totally find some vintage sales in your area. SO much fun!

Can’t wait for the next Toronto show. Maybe this fall. 🤞 Great video. It felt like I was there!

Wow super cool, I wish we had these kind of markets in my country. Hope you enjoy your new lens.

Congrats on finally getting the 85mm 1.8, !!!!! Mine basically stays on my Pentax K1. The other 2 out of my collection that I really use a lot are the 35mm 2.3 and the 135mm 3.5 preset. (and 50mm 1.4 8 element). Happy shooting!

Ive done a little research on that lens before, and that was one hell of a buy. Can't wait to see what you do with it!

Ya it was between that and the Conrad Carl Zeiss 85 1.4. They didn’t have any of those at the sale and they’re even more expensive, beautiful lens though. I’m super happy about this one especially for the price. :)

I’m glad you snagged the 85. I don’t have one of those but I hear it’s amazing especially for portraits. That show looks like a blast.

Mark Holtze The cool thing is, for that same money you could get a rather unremarkable modern AF lens. Instead you got a legendary bokeh beast that’ll still be working 50 years from now. :)

Your videos are so darn slick and well done, I'm hooked! I have been looking for that 85 in a casual way, but I love my Jupiter 9 in M-42 so its not a priority.The Takumars are very interesting with great character.

I 've got the s-m-c 50/1.4 and currently waiting for the delivery of s-m-c 135/3.5 m42.. I loove Takumars since I got hooked to the 50/1.4 m42. it was full of fungus attached to a spotmatic when I found it in a plastic bag from my late in in-law's belongings ...Perfect on sony a7II

Oh man, it's too bad I missed this one. I did promise myself I wasn't going to start buying vintage lenses again lol. Glad to see the channel growing Mark!

I definitely appreciate that Mark Holtze - You have a very nice thing going on here and I hit subscribe after the very first video I saw. I am new to vintage lenses after purchasing a Sony A6300 and not being able to afford their lenses right now. I hoped the vintage lens may be an option. I am really excited about the whole craft of photography again and hope to unearth some of the lenses you have recommended. I have a bid on the Pentagon 50mm F1:8 for around 50 bucks right now, so that may well be my first! Thanks for taking the time to edit upload videos for people like me!

Honestly it's my pleasure. I REALLY REALLY REALLY feel there is MASSIVE value in these lenses. It started with me just wanting to mount my grandfather's old SLR lenses to my Sony A7SII (full frame it would translate perfectly). I saw how cheap adapters were and was like LETS DO THIS. I'm surprised more people aren't, but given how popular modern camera tech is I assume that this is just super niche (which is fine because it keeps the market price for these babies nice and low). Does the A6300 have an image stabilizer? Make sure to turn that on if it does when you mount the lenses to get that extra bit of stabilization. But you really can't go wrong with SMC Takumar's. They're fantastic. Helios are also great and dirt cheap. Best thing is if you are done with the lens, just sell it back to the open market. You won't loose much if anything (in some cases the prices have gone up). It's a win win win ;) Plus it's lots of fun for those who love the craft. If you ever have ANY questions, let me know...happy to help. I,ve shoot Konica expired colour film and the results are awesome, such a colours, wow!

Lol, I started watching this fantasizing about the possible Canon FD lenses there at the event. However, most people aren't crazy about FD lenses when it comes to vintage gear. Then, you show your friend who is excited about the FD 135mm f/2.5 which just so happens to be my favorite portrait lens (and I have the FDn 85mm 1.8). That 135 just has such a goregeous out-of-focus rendering and the focus throw is so buttery-smooth. When I am shooting live music, I hardly ever swap it out unless I need a faster lens. They are cheap, too, and most people tend to agree thst the bokeh is more pleasing than the FDn 135mm f/2, which is 8-10x more expensive!

I really like Vintage Lenses, great Quality and an awesome special look! I want to buy someones in the next time😀👍

Not a race whoever is the fastest with the new Sony A1 or Canon R5 preview, review etc. Buy this expensive piece of gear, you need this etc. Just Experience all the cool stuff that's out there, look creative at what photography has to offer. Not a native speaker so with Anemic you mean it is not growing fast? Not many people interested in this stuff? photography was for professionals first, it was an art. Through compact camera's and cellphones it was made accessible for all and it looks like it almost killed the art. But we always need a way to express and stand-out. Everyone has a cellphone now and can take snappies in good light, wide and portrait. So how to stand-out? Have stuff that no-one else has. Better camera with more options. Focal lengths that are not on a phone, DOF. Next stage race to the sharpest lenses etc. Believe also this will grow old eventually. So the vintage look will be a way to stand-out. My hopes are high the art part will stay, I even would go as far as it will revive. In the short time, I look at vintage stuff, I already see prices rising. How to get info, your channel maybe ;) Taking snappies is not the only reason anymore to pick-up a camera. Creators on the rise and every company needs an online presence and be able to connect to its customers and stand-out. People need an online presence to connect and they need to stand-out. Information, knowledge and skills 10-5-1 years ago that looked useless, I believe will become very valuable. 8 billion people on the planet? maybe 20 billion in our lifetime. Vintage stuff that might appear in abundance (and of little value) now, will be scarce in just a couple of years. Just like art, as 3rd world countries evolve and participate in this way of life will only make this worse. And as it will become a good way to stand-out. Think you might be in the right spot real soon! btw, it is not only the knowledge and skill but also love the way you edit, tell stories and your personality!

Thanks Tony! Best bet is to google Vintage camera sale and your area. There are historical photographical societies you can prob find as well. I found outback about this event a week before it happened. So just need to do some digging :)

Mark Holtze not yet, but it’ll come. I’ve got a fairly complete set with that one major hole waiting in the pelican - 17, 24, 35 (which, you def need to try the canon breech lock FD 35mm F/2 if you haven’t - soooo sharp!) 50, 100, 135 & 200.

What was that camera that was shown off at the very end of the video?

I spotted my favourite 35mm slr, a Yashica fxd with a 50mm f2 lens. I just picked one up in a charity, (thrift) shop for £20. I got a kit for £12 to replace the body leather which was terrible. Now I have a Contax ft3 substitute in 5 star condition.

Shooting expired film will give you super faded look, I love it! (shoot the film lower by it's iso or under exposed)

Expired film usually comes out fine. The challenge is in setting up for prints. It’s best to run a test print to figure RBG adjustments. I’m still looking for that perfect digital back for 35 film cameras.

Any suggestions on places to find these events in Los Angeles? Would Facebook be a good place to look?

Damn. What a haul! I need to go to this place.

The Canon FD 85mm F1.2L is a lens I will never sell! I bought it out of Japan for under $600 USA dollars and will outperform anything I have in my bag. Hahaha

I know you're lovin that Takumar 85mm f/1.8, congrats on finding one!!!! That lens is pretty much my favorite out of my collection and I have a rather large collection. The 135mm f2.5 is also a MUST have in my opinion, my copy is extremely sharp and with unique character and excellent fall off. The 85 and 135 pair up nice, they are just different enough from each other and have their own unique personalities that it's worth carrying both lenses together. If I go out shooting vintage glass and can only take a few lenses with me its almost always the Takumars 85 f/1.8, the 135 f/2.5 and usually the 50 f/1.4 or 35 f/3.5. Have fun shooting!!!!!

Hi Jim! Thanks for the comment! Watching your 85 video made me want it :). I had a 135 2.5 in hand as well there and was 135 but only had $450 on me. No debit there was cash only. It’s my next get though for sure! I would have got a deal on the two but was just too far off with the cash. Stupid daily withdrawal limit. ;)

Yes, dumping 400 bucks on the 85 is a chunk and would make it hard to buy the 135mm on the same day, but I bet you privately almost cried having to walk away from the 135mm, especially after holding it! LOL I also went on a buying frenzy to complete my vintage lens kit and the 85mm 1.8 was the most I ever paid for a Takumar or any old lens, I think I paid 385.00 with shipping. I did get lucky though and got a mint copy. It was worth 385.00 in my opinion, especially compared to the price of other 85mm's and it's outstanding image quality. I think I paid 100.00 for my 135mm f/2.5 Tak which is also in mint condition (got lucky with this purchase too). Hell, I may go walk around and take some pics later today with my Tak 85mm!!!!!!! ;)

FYI: I also have the 135mm f/2.5 Bayonet K-mount version which is extremely sharp and a really awesome lens. It has a built in lens hood too which is cool. But, I can't shoot it on my full frame 6D2 because the mirror will get hung up on the tab that protrudes from the back of this lens mount. I have to use it on my APS-C 80D so I seldom ever use it (I rather use FF for these lenses). It's easy to become Vintage Glass Junkies! lol Have a great day

Thats a bummer about the 60D2. I shoot exclusively n my Sony alpha mirrorless for the vintage stuff for this very reason.

Thanks! I appreciate it. I'm happy to just keep pushing this stuff out when I can. I love it, it's been a great community so far nice and intimate so i'm okay with the small size. But always nice to hear someone who appreciates it. It's a lot of work on the side :) But i love it, so to be fair, it never feels like work.

I finally found one SMC 85mm f1.8, its was online action and I won it, puh - its in mint shape and I got it with a lens hood and a lens box, just did the first tests shoots and its amazing. I also bought one 50mm macro f4 and a 24mm f3.5... still waiting for them to arrive. My set is almost complete.... missing the 35mm and 135mm

You've got a 15 year old roll of 400 asa film. For every 10 years it has been expired you have to cut the speed in half. If you shoot that roll at 160 you should be good.

I find it has way more to do with how the film was stored than its age. I found rolls of film in a freezer. It was 50 years old. Shooting at box speed was perfect.

Thoughts on the Mamiya 645 80mm f1.9? It’s one of my favorites. Love it on my Mamiya 645 1000s but also Canon 6D.

Haven’t tried one unfortunately, I need to test out some Mamiya’s.

For the questions about the expired film, it depends widely on which film you use, and how expired it is. Some films, especially colour film go crazy if expired; having weird tints and casts, whereas some b lack and white films can hold on ok for a while.

Pentax-M smc 85mm f2.0 is great too. Also, try Pentax SMC (K) 30mm f2.8 and Minolta Rokkor 58mm f1.2 (MD).

Hi Mark, I enjoyed your video. How do you set up your camera to shoot with vintage lenses? I'm using AV mode, but shots are underexposed unless I leave the camera wide open. Do you use manual mode all the time?

Manual yes. Light readings are accurate so I just dial in my exposure as I want it and snap. What camera? Dslr? Mirrorless? Raw or jpeg?

@@MarkHoltze I'm into astro-imaging and own a Canon 60Da...I was looking for prime lenses to fill in the gap below my ED80 F/6 refractor and my Canon EF 20mm USM....today I scored a free Canon 24-105L IS USM...the electronics got fried during a dunking in a lake. The previous owner has hundreds of lenses and cameras in his collection...he got out of Canon a while ago too...I neutered the electronics and it doesn't give lens errors on the 60Da anymore! I'd be in the market for primes of 135mm, 200mm and if I'm dreaming a 300mm! The dream lens is supposed to be the Zeiss Tele-Tessar 300mm F4

1.9 is the older version. I’m referring to the 1.8 which is optically stronger. Hence the price difference. I would be curious to compare the two. 1.9 vs 1.8. Hmmmm ;) Thanks man!

Talking about Jackpot Bougth this for just 100$: Nikkor 35-105 Macro Nikkor 43-86 Prime Zoom Nikkor 50-135 Vivitar 75-260 Super cosinon 75-300 Nikon F301 Camera Niko FG Camera An engine for the FG camera. And I love every piece of them. They are so great I was new at this, so did not knew if they even worked. I just knew I had to buy this as fast as I could. Do I feel bad about this? I gave him a 20$ on top of this. And they were all in an exelent condition.

Funny you ask about expired 35mm film. I was hanging out with a friend at the park the other day and she was passing around a camera. When I asked her what the story was, she mentioned that there was an expired roll of film in there that she wanted to "use up". Her opinion: It might still work, but don't count on it. So use the film for a project whereby you wont be disappointed if it doesn't turn out. My question to her was: "Ok, so where do you get colour film developed nowadays?" She didn't know....

for expired film, +1 stop over exposure for ever 10 years that its expired, so i’d shoot 400 iso film as if it was 100 iso as you’d round up to it being 20 years old

I know this is an old video but I regularly shoot film from the 1950's they take a bit of experimentation to get to work but you can shoot stuff that is way out of date and it will still work just fine if you don't mind a bit of weirdness.

Wow...what a low light monster at f1.8!! On my 50d that would put me at around 135mm equivalent. I bet on full frame that lens sings. I’m loving my 50mm f1.4. I’m currently looking for a good deal on a 35mm tak🤞

I’d prefer the f2 for more light but even 3.5 would work fine. My 50mm puts me close to 80mm so I’m trying to get a 50mm equivalent from a 35 for a good walk around and shoot lens. Although I picked up a 28-105mm usm that suits me well. I guess I’m trying to collect as many Takumar focal lengths I can. So far the price is decent and if you find a lens that was well cared for the optics are superb.

By the way I just got a Jupiter-9 85mm f2 lens and I'm very disappointed, the rendered photos are so soft even my focus peaking is not working (while it works fine with all my other lenses). Any suggestions?

This is the Camerama Camera show: phsc.ca/camera/?p=10893 They have 4 a year. The "BIG ONE" is happening Oct 18th I believe in Toronto. That one is really great. What camera body are you using? DSLR? Mirrorless? It could be the optical quality of the lens? Maybe some fungus? Or maybe it's just soft wide open and see how it performs at 2.8 and 3.5.

Mark Holtze Thanks, I’ll have to check it out. I’m using a Sony a6000 and all my other vintage lenses work great. This Jupiter -9 is doing better with a UV filter and lens hood, but the focus peaking in my cañera still not working because the images are too soft. I haven’t given up yet, I’m still testing it to see if it’s good for certain type of photography or different lighting. Thanks for the response.

Hi Mark, I recently bought a SMC Takumar 35mm f2 and it has some fungus in it, I was planning on open it and clean it with Hydrogen Peroxide, I wanted to know if it’s dangerous to do that. I hope you can help me with that, I have been looking online but I couldn’t find anything.

Hi Jona, I have no experience with fungus cleaning unfortunately. petapixel.com/2016/09/29/remove-fungus-lens/ Try that, I found a bunch of sources on a quick google check. Would love to help more but I can’t advise on something I haven’t done. Hope this helps

Hey Collin! I haven’t used many vintage super wides but SMC Takumar 17mm F4 is an option. If you have coin and want “the best” Carz Zeiss has a 16mm thay is super rad. Expensive though, but it’s a bit of a collector item. I’m a Takumar guy myself so I would opt for that, but honestly the Tokina is probably just as good. Hope that helps mate!

I've done one of this kind in Bièvres (south of Paris). It's tons of fun but make sure you only bring cash and have a limited budget or you might have to eat water until the end of the month 🤣🤣

Check local photography groups. I found these guys by simply searching vintage camera communities Toronto. If we have them than you guys must. when it comes to historical items the US has loads with Europe and Russia close behind hehe. They’re off the main grid though so have to dig a bit.

A fb group came up but ya its a great place to start. We have the Canadian Historical photographica society here. Where abouts in the US are you? Try the FB group (vintage lens for video). Great group there. They’re global but might be able to use their collective knowledge to find something closer to home.

Hell yeah, man. Meets like that are crazy fun. "I do have my light-meter and my film camera..." You just flashed an S1a if I'm not mistaken. Effing stills-shooting nirvana. I just got back my H1a (same as S1a but Honeywell branded), along with its brother, my H3v (SV) from Eric Hendrickson. Buttery smooth and perfect for another 60 years. Already locked and loaded! But to shooting expired film..... it's a crap shoot. If it's a slower film, particularly slide films, that has been cold-stored or frozen you're in great shape most of the time. If not, it can still turn out great or you can get some pretty severe color shifts and everything in between. Unless you're *positive* something that old was frozen, you should give it at least a stop of extra light, often 2 full stops - it becomes less sensitive over time as the emulsion ages and breaks down. But you'll nearly always get images of some sort, if a bit "artistic". Shoot it and find out - but don't shoot unknown film for something critical. If you get a nice box of the same stuff with the same expiry date, shoot a test roll so you know where you stand and then you can usually proceed with the rest of the box knowing what you'll get because it won't change much from roll-to-roll in the same batch. For random rolls, it's just a fun roll of the dice, but in general transparency films hold up better than color-neg or faster B&W. The REAL thing to avoid is waiting a long time to develop an exposed roll - it degrades faster after it's seen light. And expired film should be processed ASAP after being shot because the same is true and it goes downhill fast (not hours or days, but weeks or months should be avoided). And also, a second "hell yeah". Fun stuff. Those Tak 85s are the knees of the bees.

By the way was that a Baldax or Franka folder at the end he was talking about? You need one. Trust me. They're cheap, tiny, damn-near pocketable, crazy fun and different to shoot with..... and they give you a 6x6 or 6x9 gorgeous image. I travel with one always. (I've a Franka Solida III, a Franka Rolfix II, and a Zeiss-Ikon Nettar)

I think the S1a is a bit pooched. I'm looking into it but like every 4th or 5th shutter I take the shutter gate sticks for some reason. When I have the back gate open it doesn't stick at all, but when I close it up it's when it sticks. I have my dad's Practica that is fully functional if I can't get this one to work consistently. Really appreciate the info on the expired film! I'm definitely going to do a bit of a random test shoot with it just to see the results. I'll document the process and post the results for anyone curious. Will consider the exposure variations as well when snapping so thanks for that additional info. There's a place in Toronto that does same day developing but also acts as a nice film source and it's located right down town on my way into work which makes picking up and dropping off really convenient. I have parents old slide projector that works like a charm, what got me back into wanting to shoot 35mm again was looking at their slides from the mid 70's and their trip to Banff Alberta. The colours are so vivid, if it weren't for the fact their outfits date them, you'd think the images were shot yesterday. It also showed me how much better projected images are vs prints. I've noticed this with 8mm film as well, the projected image is so detailed and vivid, there's that element that gets lost when you get a digital transfer. The nice thing about picking up all these M42 mounted Pentax Tak's is that they will mount perfectly to my 35mm film cameras. So once I test out this 35mm expired roll, i'm going to go for a slide roll next. Once it's proven it all works i'll make it part of my photo taking when I go on trips etc. Thanks so much for the additional info! That's super helpful and I appreciate the heck out of it!

That one was $250 which is pretty good for a camera that competes with the Hass. Medium format though would be a first for me! Beautiful looking camera though! Definitely had my attention. I forgot about that part and found it after I had paced out the rest of the video and couldn't find an organic part to just drop it in....I thought it made good post video content ;). Honestly though best part about these shows is just that, talk to these guys about stuff that looks interesting and it opens an entire world that you never would have known about. I wouldn't have tested out the Pentax Takumar's if i hadn't of gone to the last show and those lenses have been the best bang for buck by far on all my finds. They're the epitome of affordable and high build/optical quality that i'm looking for.

RE: the old medium format folders, you can find them on Ebay for a lot less than $250 much of the time. If you want to spend that much there's a stand-up guy named Jurgen Kreckel who restores various old folders and runs the site www.certo6.com (he was revamping it last I checked but it has his contact info). He re-bellows them and gets them completely CLA'd and ready to shoot for a long time to come. Worth it. You can also roll the dice on Ebay finds and what-not. Some of the Franka and Baldax cameras are surprisingly cheap and can be in really good condition - but on those if they have a self-timer, DON'T TOUCH IT. haha If the timers haven't been used in those for a long time, they'll often seize and render the whole shutter useless. And on the subject of your S1a, it sounds like the it just needs lubricating and they aren't terribly costly to have CLA'd ($100 at most). There's so little to them mechanically, having that done will make it run great for another 50 years. By your description is sounds like the trailing curtain is sticking some of the time... in these old (and newer for that matter) mechanisms every action has to complete for the entire shutter sequence to finish... e.g. shutter button-->mirror-up-->first curtain-->trailing curtain-->mirror down. If any of those "stick" the whole operation stops. And one more word of warning - I would CLA it *before* shooting slide film. The reason being that transparencies have a lot less latitude for exposure - just a stop or so in either direction can botch a shot. If you curtain/shutter/mirror is giving occasional issues it's likely that the shutter timing might also be a good bit off, so that your exposure that you *think* you're setting (based on your meter readings) aren't really accurate.... they'll usually be longer, but erratically so. Doesn't matter so much with color-neg or black and white since it's so much more forgiving. But a roll of slide film likes an accurate shutter. Then again it could turn out fine. :)

They're such good lenses, so much fun. I'll be perfectly honest though, I've gotten more side shooting gigs shooting with vintage lenses than I have with modern glass. The reason I think the lenses look different so it entices people to come over and start a conversation which often leads to "can you guys shoot our fashion event/car event/phone review" lol. But lets not share that little secret outside of this little convo got it? ;)

PK mount (50 f1.7 and 135f2.8) and 67 (105f2.4 and 200f4).

I love my pentax Macro-takumar f4 1:1 I just need to find a trustworthy shop to do a adjustment for me because I can't get to infinity with my canon adapter

Yes it’s only a few of them, I never had any issues either with my canon, except my FD’s. I haven’t tried all the lenses though :)

@@MarkHoltze Canon DSLR's with their big mount and relatively short register (44mm) are usually very good with vintage lenses aside from FD/FL or MD mounts. It's Nikon shooters that are out of luck unless doing mount conversions. There's a lot of bad M42 adapters out there though. You need one that's not too thick (1.5mm max) or you'll miss infinity with m42. If you have a lens with an M/A switch, the M43 adapters without the inner lip are usually a better idea, the inner lip is to stop down the lens via the aperture pin, but it can foul the lens mount sometimes and not let the lens fully bed in the adapter, costing you infinity focus.

Check out these guys phsc.ca/camera/ as they host loads of them. “The Big one” is scheduled for October 18th 2018 which should be fun. It’s much bigger and a coller venue than this one. Not sure if you are in the area, but loads of fun!

Mark i had to laugh when you said you didn't have to "Heckle", in the UK its Haggle because Heckle over here means someone who harasses and tries to disconcert others with questions, challenges, hecklers are often known to shout disparaging comments at a performance or event, A haggler will dispute or bargain persistently, especially over the cost of something. LOL ;)

Yes I've had to cut off ebay for a bit, recently picked up the Carl Zeiss 60mm Macro F2.8 (AMAZING lens) and the CZ 50mm 1.4 AEJ. BOTH with original boxes and documents ;)

@@MarkHoltze I'm slowly building up a collection. I generally aim for moldy / dusty lenses, because they are cheaper. I've never encountered a lens I couldn't clean or repair yet. My favorites I have right now are, Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f2.8-4.0 which is incredible, and of OM Zuiko lenses 50mm macro f3.5, 50mm f1.8, 28mm f3.5 and 200mm f4.

The rule of thumb I recall seeing somewhere is to provide one stop of overexposure for every ten years out of date.

THAnks Shunt2007. $400 Canadian dollars ya, minus $20 so $380 total. He handed me back a 20. It was slightly less than I was seeing them go for on eBay and shipping and duties would have been applied as well. Definitely the top end for a lens this old, but still loving it :)

Your images will be washed out and you will have thin negatives if your film is expired if not kept stored properly. Try to compensate for compensation of the ISO.

Mark Holtze yes. I should give you an example to be more specific Mark. So for example let’s say you have an expired roll of 400 iso color film that expired 10 years ago from now. Every decade that passes the expiry you lose one stop of exposure from the original ISO rating , so that means that instead of metering for 400 ISO/ASA, you should meter for 200 ISO/ASA, giving it one more stop of exposure for more light. This is what I heard from other film photographers so don’t count my words as stated fact. But hopefully this should help clarify more. Also expired black and white film will still turn out better than color negatives, because of the wide exposure latitude b&w has.

You spent FOUR CLAMS on an 85mm Takumar? Jeeeez..... A buddy of mine got the older f1.9 version of that lens for $15.00 at a resale shop. We tested it against my 85 f1.8 Canon FD SSC. The Canon won. Easily. And my Nikon 85mm f1.8D beats the SSC without breaking a sweat. So for a Takumar? $15.00 is just about right....

The f1.8 is decidedly better than the older f1.9, and it's up there with the SMC Takumar 15mm for collectibility, so that keeps the price nice and high.
