pro tip : you can watch movies on KaldroStream. Been using them for watching all kinds of movies lately.

You might do what I did with my crevasse rescue gear (also short, looped ropes) while mountain climbing. I put them inside a small pouch attached to my waist. They couldn't become tangled or catch on anything, but they were already attached and ready for use in an instant should I find myself smashed up and thirty feet below the surface. In such a situation, I figured I had maybe five minutes before the cold sent my motor skills to pieces.

Highly recommend getting into a class if you have the opportunity. I think every kayaker should do them every few years.

Stick a screw gate on Seth & ditch the snap gates

Where I paddle, the kayakers are warm, polite, and helpful like this. The river surfers on the other hand quite the opposite.

I haven't tried the other style yet, I did just get a Kokatat one but have not taken it for a spin yet. I will keep you posted once I Know more.

I have some friends that lost someone by getting snagged on a tree by their cowtail. Some of them are now refusing to wear them. Thanks for addressing this with some simple ideas Seth.

TayWhite I think it’s crucial to be happy to say to people when you see their gear is in a dangerous spot too. Can save lives in the long run for a little short term discomfort

Three years later are you still using one of these? It seems like ww paddlers have moved away from them. Maybe that is just my circle and my perception is off.

Can you use a cows tail for just general purpose out on the water ?

@@theaveragegamers111 Right gotcha. So yes you could but there are way better tools for the job if you were looking for a towline. I would actually say something like kokatat.com/touring-tow-tether-lvasttas0c might be better. It just has a bit more length which is better for the longer touring boats, and wind stretch out like the one in this video will. Hope that helps.

What length tail do you usually run?

As short as practical to have none hanging down, approximately 2/3 of an arms length I would guess.

i use mine on my shoulder but then i have 4 knives on me one on each leg one on my back and another on my left shoulder and i have trained to use my left hand even if im right handed

@@SethAshworth only if there is anything to snag on at all where i paddle most of the time its a place owned and maintained by the kayak club im part of no trees no rocks only mountian and water place got water diverted from it used explosives to deepen and then we removed the rocks then removed the dam and let the water back now its also a slalom training spot if im on a normal river i fasten on the belt ofc so if i pull the whole thing goes off if i get snagged im cutting the vest i have a emergengy cannister inflatable vest under my normal one just in case for when i run big water we also smoothed out areas with concrete mixed with waste material from the area

@@SethAshworth but im realy lucky with one thing this is from right outside my home the guys in my kayak club is so jealous it stinks of it hahaha and this river is about 8 km long biggest drop is 3 meetres kzread.info/dash/bejne/lpV8udNshKvHprw.html

I'm very against using these, we had a fatality in our club last year because of it. A tape and carabiner works just as well but won't snag if you go for a swim.

When used correctly these can be a useful tool. but have to be used correctly for sure or they can have dire consequences.
