7:08. "Episodic doesn't mean Filler". I am so glad someone else understands this. Nowadays way too many associate Episodic storytelling with being packed with filler and not worth watching. We need more Episodic shows in modern times and Garo really nails that balance between Episodic and Serialized.

Garo became my favorite Toku series the moment I watched its few episodes. I was a college student by that time and "Toku for Adults? Count me in!" I thought.

The transformers animated Japanese dub opening theme “Transformers EVO“ is one of my favorites by Jim project. I will never get tired of it. That’s how good it is.

I was hooked on Garo since first seeing it and absolutely love watching. An episode that lives rent free in my head is the human trying to kill Koga for the death of his daughter and the monologue he gives about Koga just wanting to kill. Also I think it’s interesting how Garo has more anime adaptations than Kamen Rider at this point.

My absolute favorite tokusatsu series of all time. All the series are fun in their own way. They have this distinct feel that no other toku has, very alluring to me. Maybe its from one of my first snes games I played that Keita worked on called Hagane 🤷🏿‍♂️

The franchise is the Uchuu Keiji version of the Exorcist, from how they summoned their armor, the Knight and Priest dynamic in the RyugaVerse, and the monster in a human skin gimmick.

Seriously, why didn’t Toei and TFC collab to make a crossover where Kouga and Retsu met and stop some Crushers, BEM Kaijus and some Horrors.

Garo is by far one of if not my favorite Toku Show. Its great to know more about what happened in production.

As animation is a medium for storytelling not a genre, such is the same for tokusatsu. If you have people that really love the story they are telling you can create an amazing thing.

Masahiro Inoue's Jinga makes me fall in love with the Garo-verse...

Even though I never watched the GARO series (until watching this video), I remembered playing the PS2 game that was based on it.

Pretty sure the US Garo Blu Rays have been out of print for a few years. From memory, there's still stock available of most of what they released (up to and including the 2nd season) but Season 1 Part 1 hasn't been available for years.

I only knew Garo from the anime's so this video has made me very interested in it. Thanks for another great video Marco!

Garo has always attracted me, despite not being much of a tokusatsu person, I do recall an anime that takes place in medieval europe... not that I can say much how it fare compared to the live action series but I do recall it being a thing. By the way I think there's a mix up with the french term werewolf and well... wolf, in french it's "loup" for wolf so my guess is that it's meant to be garo from "loup-garou" as the "were" of the werewolf, gotta love readying a bit too much into the creativity for naming and mixing/coincidences in other languages.

It’s funny that you post this at the same time/on the same day as I’m finishing The Makai Flower, then I’ll be on to Zero: Dragon Blood. I’ve been binging the GARO franchise and I’m nearly done, I feel it’s an underrated toku (probably because it’s adult-oriented and not well know unlike the big three of Ultra, Rider and Sentai)

My favorite Tokusatsu, i'm love GARO.

If I recall the in story reason why women can't be Makai Knights, is that one of the armors were made to fit a woman and they lost the process to make more. Still kind of dumb, but at least it's an explanation that doesn't make the ladies look unworthy of the job.

I’m so glad I dipped into the Garo series, I only saw a brief scene of it from an old anime store ( which sadly went out of business) that was playing one of the episodes when I was like 9 or 10

Imo jam project's best work is the stuff they've done for the Getter Robo franchise. Heats, Storm, Dragon, and Bloodlines are ALL bangers.

The Ps2 game is the one that got me into watching the series. Looking back on it now, it really does depict the show very well and I'm so glad i got to play such an obscure but really fun hack and slash!

One of my favorite sets of shows. All around amazing. ESPECIALLY THE MUSIC. Loved the movies, especially with hammy Jinga played by Mr. Deecccccccaaaaaddddo. Though the Jinga series was a bit meh, the ending however was HOLYCRAP....

Nice work on the video! I've recently been delving into Garo myself (Both the original 1st season and Heir to Steel Armor by the time of this comment) and I have to say, it's really a breath of fresh air after years of watching the usual Big 3 Tokusatsu heroes lol 😂 The first time I got to know Garo was from a now-defunct local magazine simply called as "Henshin!". I have to say, I was utterly fascinated by Garo's armor, as well as Zero and Garo's Gouten. They all look just REALLY different from the usual Tokusatsu heroes, especially with how ornate their designs are and I LOVE IT. Not only that, I believe Toku actors like Masahiro Inoue (who played as both Decade and Jinga/Roze) also played a part in pulling me into the Garo rabbit hole, or rather wolf den lol 😂 Now that the Kouga-verse has pretty much been completed (unless there might be possible crossover events), all that's left are the Ryuga-verse and VR-verse for the live action series. That being said, speaking of VR-verse, I wish that there'd be a 2nd season where we could get to see the Garo VR armor being used more (including having a LIVE SUIT), whether Sena would find another reason to fight or have someone else with a bigger resolve wear the armor.

regarding the FFXIV you can get cosmetic versions of the all the armors from the golden saucer, that's what I was doing during the last time i had subscription to it

I've been trying to get Goten. Only really got the cosmetic NIN weapon, debating on getting the cosmetic versions of Dan's gear but for now waiting for confirmation the Sony breach is plugged up before going further.

I saw the first two episodes of chapter of the black wolf and I can see the appeal. I'll probably get to this a whole one day but for now I'm finishing the animes.

I kinda get a lion vibe more from Garo's armor then a wolf. Zero/Rei's armor looks more wolf themed to me. Just my opinion still enjoyed the video

the reason why woman cant be maki knight in Garo lore is that when maki armor were originally created for men and the way creating new maki armor was lost to time so maki armor need to be passed down from a maki knight to his son or be chosen by the blade to become a maki knight if you watch zero black blood there is a character in the show who try to use her father sword but every time she try to whiled it cause here extreme pain also watch Garo: The Animation this show also give you a reason why woman cant be maki knight.

The reason is "sexism." It's extremely clear that if characters like Jabi and Rekka had been allowed to train with the boys as children, they'd have been perfectly capable of being knights.

GARO to this day still remains my favorite toku series of all time. I will be one of the first to admit not all of it is perfect (because good lord it isn't XD) but the show really is committed to being "art". Also, in regards to the FF14 GARO armors, you can buy non dyeable versions at the Gold Saucer. But PVP gives you currency whether you win or lose so... Get it while you can while it's still around... Getting the horses? Yeah, THAT is the real problem XD

Garo is a Tokusatsu drama not suitable for younger audiences not only because of its serious conversations and complex plot but also because it depicts a lot of horror scenes, violence, gory content and nudity. I've watched adult-oriented dramas such as Kamen Rider Black Sun, Kamen Rider Amazon and Garo. They have one thing in common, they are made into adults-only drama on purpose by incorporating a lot of mature elements such as bloody content, violence and depiction of sexuality. Meanwhile, a lot of other Tokusatsu series are titled Targeted To Children which includes some Ultraman series that have modified conversations, simplified plots, as well as repetitive identical transformations and final finishers. These contents usually appear boring to an adult viewer. An excellent drama should be appealing to audiences of all age groups. The ideal Tokusatsu series should convey positive themes and audiences from all age groups enjoy watching. In this kind of series, adult audiences enjoy the plot, characters and art of the special effects, while minor audiences are more interested in the hero’s shiny forms, intense fighting and brilliant finishers.

The original release was in 480p. They started remaking the special effects for the hd release a few years ago. Certain special effects were too complicated or complex to spend the money to redo them. Which is why certain scenes the cgi doesn’t match the quality of the rest.

Marko, how do you write so well? How long does it take? and do you work with other creators to make this possible? I'm genuinely curious, I love your Toku videos.

You can't get the first half of the first TV series in Blu-ray in the US. It went out of production iirc.

While I don’t know how long they’ll still be there the garo and ffxiv collab is back currently and by my guess will still be there till at least next summer when the next expansion comes out

Just finished the first season of GARO recently. As a long time tokusatsu fan who grew with it (starting with Dyna), GARO had been on my watchlist for quite some time. Read a simple premise of it beforehand and was already aware of it being more adult-oriented. Got mixed feeling about it; on one hand, the Makai Senshi concept is amazing, the costumes are way too good, the fight scenes are wonderful (especially the non-suit fight scenes!), and its opening theme by HIRONOBU FREAKING KAGEYAMA is absolutely one of the GOAT tokusatsu musics. On the other hand, as a drama, it's kinda bland most of the time. Back during the 1990 ~ 2000s, a standard episode of tokusatsu would usually not only include the weekly monster, but some short drama revolving the life of certain guest character(s) who would get involved with the monster, and GARO is weak when it comes to this. That being said, the story has this tendency to be really engaging whenever Kouga and Rei clash with each other especially during the battle on top of the skyscraper which goes in my personal list of favorite toku episodes. All in all, the first season of GARO isn't something I'd recommend if someone would ask for a more mature tokusatsu (that goes to Ultraman Nexus and Kamen Rider First-Next) but I did enjoy it.

I showed Garo to my sister, she liked it, we watched the first episode and she was talking about how Kaoru was usless (I was laughing my ass off in my mind), We watched until like the 3th episode, cause I wanted to watch Doctor Who, I tried to give her the GARO lore and the timeline placement, but she was confused, it was funny! GARO is one of the best tokus of all time, also if you are into Sanrio, then I highly recommend Jewelpet, also I make sure my research is always correct, when I work on a video/lore sheet, so it isn’t wrong, and my favorite Jewelpet season, it’s sorta like Madoka Magica, in which Momona, the main character is like Madoka, how, well - Both are pink-themed bashful, all-loving everyday girls who get dragged into an adventure unexpectedly, both use arrows as weapon, and later become Messianic Archetypes by sacrificing themselves to defeat the main evil monsters (Witches and Beasts) once and for all.

wouldn't call GARO so small. Currently GARO might be equal to ULTRAMAN he has pretty expanded universe with new seasons released every year and anime spin offs
