Alina, this a wonderful presentation! As most Westerners, I did not learn much about Russian history. I am intrigued with this subject because I grew up on a farm near Loretto, Pennsylvania. There is a church in Loretto that was started in the 1700(s) by a Prince from the Russian Royal Family. His name is Prince Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin. He was the first fully ordained Catholic priest in the United States of America. It is an interesting history on how he became a Catholic Priest and ended up in the United States! I appreciate your creativity and expertise!

Great video. I was there in winter, and my guide and I were the only ones around. It was so sad, but so necessary to go pay respects. Yekaterinburg/Ekaterinburg is a lovely place and the people were so nice. The cathedrals are amazing. I remember not only the beautiful icons and details but also the stillness in them. And, yes, the weather was exactly the same as in my home city in Canada the whole time! Just like home, people were randomly skating and playing hockey on outdoor rinks around the city. Now I miss it!

Actualy it is named in honor of Vladimir Vysotsky, there is a museum devoted to him on the second floor. It's just a play of words, becouse surname Vysotsky and adjective "vysokiy" (высокий) , that means hight, have a similar pronunciations, and ,most likely, comon origin.

I appreciated the gentleness in dealing with the tragic events of those times. We all (at least me, directly, my generation just after the second war) feel the consequences of those happenings. From Italy but actually from Jugoslavija after the 2ww.

WOW what an amazing video! Yekaterinburg is absolutely stunning! I studied Russian history in college and for some reason never picked up on where exactly the royal family was murdered. My parents toured Russia twice. Now I gotta go!

Great video. I have only known this City as a place name, and site of that infamous event. Your views of it show a place far more modern and wealthy than I expected. The tower views reminded me of those in Toronto and Chicago. And the Russian pronunciation of the City was a surprise, too. I should have asked my (Russian) wife about that long before.

Elina i watch the many movies you made it amazing. you can explain very well in English langue.

I guess the thing your videos illustrate is that Russia really is a peaceful, friendly and safe country where tourists can enjoy a culture very different from their own.

Oh I am still sometimes intimidated! It honestly just gets easier the more you do it and the way I try to approach it is to choose people who don't look like they're in a hurry to get anywhere or are curiously looking at me with the camera (meaning they're already kind of interested). After that I just let them know what I'm doing and usually give them a little bit of money too for their time. Overall it's been a very positive experience.

Very interesting video Alina, thanks. The Czar and immediate family did have some opportunity to flee, prior to abdication. Alexandra apparently did not want to leave Nicolas behind during his activities during the war (WWI). As Great Britain's King George V's cousin (who resembled each other quite a bit), there were tentative plans discussed to bring Nicolas (and family) to Great Britain or other European royal houses (they were not fans of Alexandra). Time ran out. Murdering the children was completely abhorrent. History could argue with The Czar (and Czarina's) deeds for certain. It wasn't until early adulthood that I learned that most of the European royalty were all interrelated (and closely) and this upset me to think of all the millions of victims of all the wars that these monarchs essentially played at, like a perverse board game. The photo banners of the Romanoffs were very poignant. And yes, it is depressing. You did exactly what I would do after all that somberness; get thee to a bakery🙂! Yakaterinburg looks cool, a nice KZread channel, "Russian Plus", comes from there often and what a great mix for a city. Спасибо большое 🇺🇸.

The children were victims of their parents. They were all possible claimants to the deposed empire if it had been restored. That is why they were all eliminated.

Hi Alina, great videos! And you look gorgeous! I've been in Canada few years ago. I think in Ottawa at Parliament or maybe at Parliament Library I saw a portrait of Nickolay's cousin. I don't remember his name. HE HAS THE SAME FACE as Nick!!!!! Literally, they both look like twins. Our guide said that when our royal family asked for shelter at Canada, it was refused. I just can't forget it.

Also Visotsky is not the highest building in Yekaterinburg, that would be Iset tower by the other side of the City Pond.

The name Высоцкий is kind of original because it is a wordplay. Высоцкий was a singer and songwriter who had an immense impact on our culture. Almost every Russian knows his meaningful songs full of brilliant satire. At the same time, as you said, his family name sounds similar to the word "high" in Russian). The songs are highly recommended to listen to if you understand and speak Russian)). By the way, thank you so much for all your videos, you are amazing)))

The unpopularity of Tsar Nicholas and the Romanov dynasty was not just because of Russian losses in World War 1. It also had to do with centuries of repression of the lower classes and failure of the dynasty to adapt to modern ideas of democracy.

Absolutely correct! The Russian Tsars were absolute monarchs and did not allow modern parliamentary democracy to exist in the Russian Empire. The Tsar also engaged in a disasterous war against Japan about 10 years before WWI, which Russia lost badly. Also, his German-born spouse, the Tsarina, was not helpful during WWI, when Russia was at war with Germany.

You are the second blogger who visited the capital of Ural and who say that it's known for the fact that the royal family was killed here. This fact is very much overvalued. Вот история Демидовых - это тема! Акинфий Демидов, Павел Бажов - каждый кирпич мостовой у администрации кричит тебе: "Нахрена тебе эти Романовы??? Ты на Урале, а не в Питере!"

If you want to visit Ekaterinburg again, i highly recommend you to visit Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center (or just simply Yeltsin Center). It`s nice museum about Boris Yeltsin`s life (he was born, grow up and studied in Ekaterinburg. Also he was the leader of Sverdlovs Oblast) and his presidency in 1990-s.

Hi, and thanks a lot for your videos! Some comments, nonetheless: I'm sort of accustomed that most Europeans are absolutely confident that the Russian history was very, VERY, V-E-R-Y harsh and cruel. OK, but when I ask if Henry VIII of Bloody Mary were also cruel, I hear the asnwer "yes, but that was just an exception. Unlike the Russian history." "Well", I say then, "but did you ever know that Russian Empire was the first country in Europe to abolish the death penalty? The most severe punishment that a court could sentence over a criminal, was sending him to the hard labour." (Death penalty was abolished in Russia 1754 by the Empress Elisabeth. it was then reinstated in 1906). Most Western people to whom I tell it get kind of confused, apparently because it contradicts anything in their knowledge, experience and understanding.

Alina, This is just lovely. It is an opportunity for us non-Russian speaking people to have an "insider's look" into a culture that due to the cold war, and of course Stalinist restrictions before that, we never see. I knew the story about the Czar's family from school and about the possible escape of Anastasia. Many Americans and English people heard of it in the book ( originally banned in Russia ), and quite popular movie done about it ( Dr. Zhivago, by Boris Pasternak ). I have read another book about the life of Boris, his family and lover and her daughter, both sent to the gulag because of their associations with Boris. It was written by Anna Pasternak. It opened my eyes to many things. You are opening them to many more things as well. Thank you so much for doing so. You seem to be in much better spirits now out eating fancy food and taking in the sights than you were while starving on the railway adventure a short time ago. In the movie, depicting the early 20th century, they went through the Urals crowded into a freezing, dirty cattle car, so even though it's still a bit rough, some progress may have been made. The paintings and photographs and the gold icons in the church are lovely. A religious response by a people to an act of political brutality of the type that of course start wars, change the destinies of nations, etc., and to be present throughout the length of all recorded human history, unfortunately.
