Sharks have patrolled the waters for over 400 million years, and while they are powerful creatures, they actually have more reasons to fear us. What intrigues you most about sharks?

I can for one say the Jaws movie did a number on me, I watched it at a young age and to this day I have an instinctive fear and insecurity when swimming in any sort of body of deep or ocean water.... thinking it's beneath me - the bright red bulging gums and the rows of teeth don't help the case either for me....

  • @daysofgrace7818

I’m the same. I watched Jaws around 87 or 88 as a ten year old and I hated the water after that. Didn’t live near the sea but was scarred to go in a pool and even take a bath! Anyway years later..I’d obviously overcome this fear..or so I thought. I was lying in a bath and for some reason my wife opened bathroom door and closed the light! I panicked and nearly had heart attack! I hadn’t seen Jaws for years so hadn’t even thought about it…until that moment and suddenly remembered the first death scene at night with that girl!!

    1) they bite, they tear pieces off, or limbs 2) the sea is not our environment, it’s not our territory, it’s theirs. 3) The ocean is vast and deep. There is a lot unknown about it. That summarizes my fear

I’ve had many run ins with sharks surfing here in Hawaii.. both peaceful sort of and one terrifying.. I once paddled up a big wave and a tiger shark was in the same wave . It was easily 15 ft and old.. but it just cruised by me slowly and kept going. Another was an aggressive shark that surfaced near us .. all the fish jumped out of the water and the shark surfaced and vibrated then started chasing fish.. it nailed a huge honu or turtle and we paddled in .. we practically live in the ocean here so dealing with sharks have a few basic rules.. don’t panic..and if you do get away from me 🤙

I think the human fear of sharks comes from one thing; we don't want to be bitten or eaten! Being killed and eaten by mammalian carnivores, cannibals, stung to death by Africanised honey bees, taken for a quick dip by crocodilians, envenomed by reptiles and my mother-in-law's visits are also things I try to avoid. As would anybody who has met my mother-in-law.
