Ace Combat is very often underrated as just a "funny plane game where you do warcrimes", and while in some way it is that, there is a lot more to these games that people don't notice. That's why I like deep dives and analysis of the series, because there is a lot more to see if you actually bother to look deeper. Hopefully we'll see more of these videos.

I played this AC1 at launch, along with Ridge Racer Revolution. In 1995 this look was very impressive. Honestly I only noticed how simple the engine was when AC2 was released a year later. It was amazing how far AC has evolved in a year and how Namco's mere understanding of the Playstation has completely changed the experience. The first analog controls of the Playstation, still without vibration, were already recognized by AC2 and already allowed the use of analogues, but still without the question of the camera that would come with AC3 or the vibration that came only as a dual shock.

Given the time frame, it’s entirely plausible that the Coup Forces might’ve been a ploy by the AWWNB faction from Zero to draw Merc Manpower away from Ustio in the aftermath of the Belkan War. Granted, it started “six months ago,” so either AWWNB was more widespread than previously shown, or Phoenix has one hell of a Speedrunning streak in this headcanon.

I played AC1 for the first time last week, after playing AC5,X,7,Z,3 and 4 first (in that order), and I actually loved it. The music was amazing and it was great to see how much in sequels the core stayed the same but everything was improved.

The contrast between different points in Ace Combat's history is really neat to see. To take a future Ace Combat game and compare it to the first one to see how things have improved since then while retaining the core of what makes the series so fun to play like you mentioned is really cool.

About the gameplay. I've played a lot of AC2 which also didn't had analog sticks, so you will use the D-pad for everything, and use yaw with L2 & R2. Years Later, I had an epiphany, Ace Combat 7 sold flight sticks to simulate the realistic side of a game that is a hybrid of an Arcade and a Simulation flying game. "So" - I thought to myself, "Why won't I just use an arcade stick" So I used a fighting arcade stick, Qanba Obsidian Arcade Fighting Stick. But there is a problem the button layout on the the Joystick is weird, the R2 and L2 are on the opposite sides, the R2 is on the left and the L2 is on the Right. Furthermore i've played AC2 for the longest time on novice because I was a kid, which means you Roll and Yaw on the Left and right D-pad. So what I did, was to switch the L2 and R2 but I also wanted to push the Arcade stick left and right to Yaw. So my Left D-pad was yaw left and my right D-pad to Yaw Right, My L2 was Roll RIGHT and my R2 was to Roll LEFT. It all was possible to do only in emulation, but it worked so damn goooooood, that I've played like this with AC2 until I beat it. and then played AC3 like this, but it has Analog sticks, and the Arcade stick also can have different D-pads, with a push of a specific button you can change the stick itself from a D-pad to Right analog to Left analog. You just need to map it itself with the enulator. That's how i've played AC3 for the first time and beat it, it was like a new experience with AC2 and it was amazing with AC3. The same goes for AC4-0, i've played and finished all those games for the fist time in 2018, just before AC7, thanks to my dad i had an Xbox and so after finishing AC7 I've played AC6 and loved it. The only game that is left is X. So yeah, using a fight arcade stick on PS1 games like AC games works too damn well than I could've expected.

That is so cool! I hadn't even thought of something like that before, a DIY flight stick with the fighting game stick! Awesome that you were able to solve the button layout problem through changing the inputs through emulation too. I can imagine why you say it was a new and amazing experience, that sounds neat!

@@ThunderousFolf yeah, it was a bit of a headache, but it's not that complex. after a while you know how to do it by heart. but AC5 is still a bit exciting, you'll need to change Sticks to answer yes or no while dodging missles but that's just part of the fun. If you suck don't blame the game, blame yourself for being bad. that my moto.

Regarding those emulation issues: I *highly* recommend checking out Duckstation - Air Combat runs smooth as silk on it, not a single issue - generally that thing is just about the best emulator I've ever used, PSX or otherwise. It's super easy to set up, still receives semi-regular updates for the very few, minor issues some games still have on it and has such an impressively polished suite of options and UI that other emulators (like PCSX2 for example - also recommend that one, should you decide to give the PS2 games a shot on PC) have started to outright borrow from it. Kudos to you for even getting epsxe set up at all, by the way - that emulator is a notoriously finnicky piece of tech. Personally I could really only ever get it to work by running several other bits of software to keep it on its feet. I believe the devs stopped working on it quite a few years ago at this point.

Not only this. But it also emulates NeGcon and Analog Joystick controllers which are utilized in the first two AC games for proper analog control. And can be bind to modern analog controllers for the best experience. I guess the most gamers experienced those games only on digital standard PS1 controller back in the day. It is the same with first Ridge Racer games on PS1.

I may give Duckstation a try given all the positive things I've seen about it! Another person commented saying they use Duckstation and it's been running well. Would you recommend it over Retroarch too? I've definitely noticed how ePSXe is lacking compared to some other emulators. Even with something like Retroarch, that has a wide array of options and settings compared to ePSXe. Performance wise, the only things I've seen was the audio troubles from Air Combat. But I suppose I should count myself lucky there since it sounds like it's been more of a pain for you given the different softwares you've had to run for it? Unless there's a specific reason for me to use it again, I'll probably put ePSXe to the side for now.

@@ThunderousFolfIf you read this and do a retrospective on ACX, I discovered something I thought was funny in it you might want to try. I can’t remember proper names in that game, so bear with me, but there was a mission at a port where you had to destroy ground forces without damaging the port facilities. If you damage too much, the mission fails and AWACS yells at you like usual. If you play the mission using the Fenrir and shoot its big explosion missile right into the center of everything, basically destroying the whole port in one shot, the music stops, AWACS says nothing, and you kind of just fly in silence for about 30 seconds before the “Mission Failed” text pops up. You can literally fail so bad, the game is speechless.

I soo disagree with saying that this game has aged poorly. The game is still beautiful *if* you set the emulator up to make it beautiful. Last time I replayed this was 2021, before I played AC3 for the first time ( _got playthroughs of both of course_ ). Been considering to replay it again using Duckstation. 22:55 - I don't think it's the lack of analogue sticks that's bothering you, but rather not taking into consideration the mobility stat which is directly responsible for how your plane will behave. The F-22 for example is just objectively superior in almost every way, the F-15 has the highest stat, and the MIG-31 is like trying to steer an ox riding a unicycle.
