This has been my issue in football manger, i know obviously not real life but still. All my tactics have wingers that cut inside meaning my fullbacks need to play as wingbacks. To do this they need to have the pace to bomb up and down the flanks out wide, be able to cross the ball decently whilst ALSO being able to defend. Essentially you need to be good/ decent going forward whilst also being good/decent in defence. It’s easy enough to find fast defensive full backs but to find a quality wing back is tricky because it asks more of you. This is ESPECIALLY true when dealing with regens.

Dennis Irwin would be absolutely elite as a LB in this setup. He was immense during his time but I think today he'd be even more pivotal.

He had one great season and his form hasn't been the same ever since i don't know why some people believe he is the best LB just becuz he has pace. Same goes with Hernandez. Robbo clears them both. Although this season we have seen some amazing LBs like Grimaldo, Udogie and Inter's Dimarco.

lucas and mendy are quite defensive,robbo way past his prime,cancelo,theo and davies bad in defense and acuna isnt marcelo,evra,alba level fullback.

the answer is they have to be left footed, rare in itself. the good left footers don't want to play defense, so the big guys are too slow for LB/RB, leaves only some specific players that aren't Left Wingers but are good on offense and excel on defense

I'm gonna be honest, in 15-20 years dominant footed players are going to be a thing of the past. More younger players are realizing that if they're dynamic in both feet they'll get more goal scoring opportunities.

By nature people are either left or right footed....

LB position is different to what it used to be. Players at LB now have to be wingers basically that defend. It is very rare to find players like that. Players like clichy, cole, evra etc would be converted into CBs or would play both roles instead of attacking full backs

Tell this to my Football Manager save where for some reason in the year 2040, 13 out of the best 20 players in the world are LBs.

The concept of a left footed CB makes sense to me, but I never thought about it.

I used to play alot as LB in high school football ... We have to defend high pace winger in our side but quite fun

Theres such scarcity that Arteta converted a a right sided Timber to LB, worked out pretty well even though the sample size is small.

Bit of a reimmergence with estupinian and Uogie at least

That's why Cucurella was so expensive, despite being just a slightly above average LB

I'm not here saying "could have been pro" but I played LB from a very young age through to top division in a small team vs. academy teams - what a lot of people don't understand is that at that age and level you then get lads who were the best in their town and play as a forward will convert to whatever position they can get gametime and they're insanely hard to play. A top PL full-back could play as an elite striker in lower divisions quite easily. Our best goalscorer went on to play as a defender in the PL for a few years.

I am a goalkeeper, but when I play outfield, I play LB, LWB, LM and LW. Why?.. Well bizarrely enough, my strongest foot is my right; although I can control, dribble, pass and shoot with my left, the main reason is because my vision and my mentality is stronger in the game when i play on the left side than I am on the right side of the pitch. I'm a lot more comfortable playing on the left and everyone presumes I'm left footed. I guess outward crosses to the box is better but I can do that no problem 😊 and going converted to shoot is no problem either.

And then when you finally have one, Big Ange makes him play striker 🙃

Yeah, but those are in the past, and football evolved to have more attacking and less defensive fullbacks, but speaking of italian LB specifially, Udogie and DI Marco are definitely world class at the moment.

Ashley Cole is the best left-back of the Premier League era and arguably his generation. No doubt the best defender in that position, when compared to the likes of Marcelo, Jordi Alba or even Evra (Cole was better defending and going forward than Evra). Wenger said Cole is the best left-back of the premier league era. Carlo Ancelotti said everyone can see he's the best left-back in the world.

However as full backs are expected to move to the center of the pitch in build up in some systems I wonder that gives right-foot left backs more opportunities. Also looking at Tomiyasu playing left back against top players like Salah I have to wonder does right-foot left backs has an advantage against inside forwards or inverted wingers

Start at the academy, teach the young defenders to use both feet .

Any good lbs like chillwell shaw robertson are all injury prone so this doesnt help

This might be my hottest take but because England have so many good attackers and no good left backs we should start Saka at left back. He’s way better than Shaw or Chilwell at defending and obviously offers so much going forward. Imagine you’re a right back against Foden and Saka is overlapping.

Im an inter fan and i think i never witnessed a better left back (in my time watching) than Dimarco. IMO there are plenty of good left back in the world, we just have to give them some credits. I mean, the best right back are hakimi, frimpong and Alenxander arnold. The best left back are Dimarco, Grimaldo, Theo Hernandez. There is not such a difference between these two roles, i think that we were just used to better left back once, but football has lost quality in every position of the field since all the ex legends retired
