Where does our seed come from? | A Documentary by Phone

How to have a better life, a healthy earth, and sustainable agriculture in the future? We can start by talking about our agricultural seeds. We have to understand that right now we are not using local seeds for our farms. This could hurt us in the long run, because it is far from sustainability that should be the goal.
Most Indonesian farmers now grow Hybrid or GMO seeds. Therefore, they will use synthetic fertilizer which will be bad for the earth. However, some farmers are actually choosing local seeds which are stronger and more reliable.
When we talk about food sovereignty, we need to ask, where do we get our seed from? Have we contributed to sustainable agriculture? If we haven’t, what should we do?
Local seeds are the answer. That is why since 2016, IDEP has been assisting local farmers to produce local organic seeds independently. Apart from assisting the production, they also carry out quality control, packaging, and marketing. So that local farmers can touch the wider communities.
Collaboration. It is also the key to most movements now. When the issue of sustainable agriculture movements arises, Niskala Studio believes that collaboration is also a simple but effective way to show facts to the world.
We collaborate, grow, learn, and make videos together with #documentarybyphone idea.
This first documentary by phone was directed by Prema Ananda in collaboration with IDEP foundation. Stay tuned for our next documentary!
