Where do the names of the days of the week come from?
Have you ever wondered how the days of the week got their names? In this video, I will explain their origins. You'll learn how these names are related to ancient mythology and to the planets. 'Etymology' is the study of the origin of words. Some of the days of the week have a simple etymology, like 'Sunday' -- the day of the Sun, but many of the others aren't as easy! This is a very interesting way to learn about the English language and the cultures that have influenced modern English. I'll also explain how these names relate to the French and German languages. Join me as we will travel back in history, and out into the solar system. I hope you enjoy the journey! Take the quiz to test yourself at www.engvid.com/days-of-the-wee...

Hi. I'm Gill at www.engvid.com, and today we're going to be looking at the days of the week and the origin of the names of the days, which are obviously different in different languages, but in the English language, the days, a lot of them, apart from the sun and the moon, a lot of the days are named after gods. Not... Not god, not the Christian god, but before Christianity came to the UK or to Britain, we had these... It's called pagan gods. "Pagan" just means before Christianity. So, there were these not just one god, but a group of gods, and a goddess as well, a female god. And the days were named after them. Okay. So let's have a look through the days of the week and I'll tell you all about how the day got its name. Okay. So, this goes back hundreds of years, so that's why it's a little strange.
So, "Sunday", the main religious day in the Christian world, but before Christianity in the pagan times, Sunday-obviously, "sun"-was named after the sun. Sun's Day. Because, obviously, you look up into the sky and the sun is the brightest thing there, and it keeps you warm and all of that, so everyone knew the sun was very important for human life to survive, so they named the first day of the week after the sun. Sun's Day. And just to make a link, here, with the German language because we share a lot of similar words with the German language: "Sonntag", so in German as well, the sun... The word for "sun" in German is in the name of the German word for Sunday. Okay. Right, so that's Sunday, Sun's Day, the day dedicated to the sun.
Next day: "Monday". It's not totally obvious, but it's named after the moon. Moon. "Mon", "moon", so there's a little moon. And again, because the sun, most important and then after that you look up in the sky at night and you see the moon, so it's like the second most important thing that you see. So, Moon's Day, Monday. And in German: "Montag", so that's the moon in German. But also, the example from French because in French the word for "moon" is "lune", "la lune", so in French, again, the day is named after the moon and it's called "lundi". So even in French, which has a different word, it's still connected with the moon. Okay. Right, so that's the sun and the moon for the first two days of the week.
Now, this is where it gets interesting. "Tuesday" is named after one of the pagan gods called Tiu, T-i-u. Tiu's Day. Okay? And he came from the sort of North European group of gods. Okay? And Tiu was the god of war. He represented war or... And the god of the sky, generally. And the link, here, with the Southern European gods which come mostly from the Roman gods. So, the French name for Tuesday, and the French words come from the southern group of gods, the Roman god of war is Mars. Okay? Like the planet... There's also a link with the planets, and that's the red planet, Mars. So, in French, Tuesday is called "mardi" because it's linked to Mars. So, in the northern group of gods we have Tiu's Day and he's the god of war, and in the southern group of gods we have mardi, Mars, and Mars is also the god of war in the Southern European gods. Okay. Whoops, sorry. Right.
Moving on: "Wednesday", which is always a tricky one to spell, difficult to spell. It's Wed-nes-day, but we pronounce it: "Wensday". That's named after Woden. Woden's Day. Okay? And Woden was the sort of chief god in charge of all the other gods. He was the top god. Woden's Day. Okay. In the southern group of gods, in French, Wednesday is "mercredi", which is named after Mercury. But in this case, Mercury is not the equivalent of Woden. So, sorry, that's a bit not very... Anyway, that's the way it goes. We can't change it. "mercredi" in French is named after Mercury, who was the messenger god. Okay. And again, there's a planet named after Mercury as well. So, anyway, Northern European, Woden's Day. Wednesday. Right.

@@trivikrama8699 Ok thanks for this explanation I will remember it. I have a question for you: Q. Out of these 7 heavenly bodies ( Ravi,Soma, Mangal,Budh, Brihaspati,Shukra & Shani) only 2 ( Ravi & Soma) are visible to human eye as big distinct objects in the sky , Venus( Shukra graha) looks like a star but rest are invisible . So how come ancient Vedic people gave these planets names if they were not visible to human eye?

As a Spanish speaker (native language, and living in the USA, English second language) i find this fascinating. I had 2 years of high school German so, I appreciate the link between it and English. On the Spanish side: DOMINGO, LUNES, MARTES, MIERCOLES, JUEVES, VIERNES, SABADO. You can see the correlation between the names.
Saturday, the final day of the week, was originally known as Laugardag (formed from Loki's name, but it translates to wash-day). When adapted to English, the day did in fact maintain its connection to Loki. The word Saturday is based on Sataere (the thief in ambush

This weekday meant: "Bath Day". Old vikings actually took (at least) one bath a week, which was quite impressive compared to what the rest of Europe was doing :)

How interesting! I've always wondered to myself about the origin and reason behind every day's name. Now I've got the answer, thanks to you Gill 🙏
In the Spanish language you can find as well:"lunes" (Monday) comes from 'luna" (moon); "martes" (Tuesday) comes from "marte" (Mars); "miércoles" (Wednesday) comes from "mercurio" (Mercury); "Jueves" (Thursday) comes from "Júpiter" (Jupiter); "Viernes" (Friday) comes from Venus (Venus); "sábado" comes from "Saturno" (Saturn) and "domingo" comes from latin "dominus", the day of sir, the owner who domain.
Perfect English, perfect information accompanied by perfect explanation, how can it be a dislike?

Each planet corresponds to a specific vibratory frequency, color, subtle element, geometrical form and even a personality type with its own likes and dislikes, friendships and enmities. Each individual person is made of a specific and unique combination of the energies of these planets that determines his characteristics, likes and dislikes, personality and behavior.
Very interesting to know the etymology of the words! Thanks, Gill!!
Thank you so much, for this very interesting class, i didn't know anything about days' names, furthermore now i also know the meaning of the italian's names for each day of the week, which is great! 😊 I always loved watching your videos, and i will continue to do so because i find you're the best teacher ever! Many thanks! 😊
Sunday: a translation of the Latin dies solis ('day of the sun'). Monday: a translation of the Latin dies lunae ('day of the moon'). Tuesday: probably named after an otherwise unknown Germanic god Thingsus, the god of the popular assembly. Another possibility is a link to a thing meaning "time for trial". In earlier times, it may have been judged on Tuesday. In Latin, Tuesday was called Dies Martis: the day of Mars, the god of war. Wednesday: named after Wodan, the Germanic supreme god. With the Romans, Wednesday was the Dies Mercurii: the day of Mercury, the god of trade and profit. Thursday: named after the Germanic god Donar (Thor), the god of thunder. Donar was identified with the Roman god of thunder, Jupiter. That is why the dies Iovis ('the day of Jupiter') was named after Donar by the Germans. Friday: named after Freya, the Germanic goddess of fertility, love and lust. Her Roman counterpart was Venus, after whom this day was named by the Romans (dies Veneris). Saturday: a translation of the Latin dies Saturni: day of Saturn, the god of agriculture. Saturday is a corruption of Saturn.

In Swedish ”lördag” is short for lögaredagen, the day you take a bath. The finnish word for Wednesday seems to be related to the german word, Mittwoch which also means ”mid week”.
Thank you Gill. You are the best teacher i ever met. Everything is clear and not British people can understand your lessons. I’m in love with you ♥️
Once again, Thank you Gill and have a nice Sun Day.
In Portuguese the names for the days are very simple, you just have to count: Monday = segunda (second) Tuesday = terca (third) Wednesday = quarta (forth) Thursday = quinta (fifth) Friday = sexta (sixth) The exceptions are Saturday (sabado) and Sunday (domingo). Sabado comes from "Shabat" (the seventh day of the week)... That's why Monday is called "second" (segunda) in Portuguese. The first day of the week is Sunday (believe it or not... It comes after the last day "shabat"/sabado). The names are not capitalized.
