Where Do Fruit Flies Come From, And Are You Eating Them? | The Curiosity Desk

Fruit flies don’t actually consume much fruit - they’re more interested in yeast and bacteria growing on rotten fruit, says entomologist Tanya Latty.
This week, Westborough resident Wayne Firstenberg asks a question that has long bugged him: “Where do fruit flies come from ? It's an annoying miracle to me that they just suddenly appear on my aging fruit.”
We discovered why your kitchen is a dream home for fruit flies. And, yes, that does mean that if a small colony takes flight when you pick up a ripe banana on, say, a Thursday, there’s a pretty good chance you might have gobbled up some of its siblings earlier in the week.
And, while this “annoying miracle” of an insect may be bothersome on your bananas, it’s also been a boon for biochemistry.

Okay so they come into the house and land on ripened bananas, I was hoping to get this question answered... they lay eggs on the skin of the banana, or do they borrow down to the actual fruit and lay eggs there?

I bought two rotisserie chickens yesterday, pulled off a little meat from one breast to eat it then snapped it back in its container. The next time I went in there, there were, what looked like 5-6 gnats in there on the chicken breast. I didn’t puke but I didn’t debone the chicken like I wanted too. Should I throw away the chicken they were on? I don’t eat the skin so I’m not to worried about the meat where I’m going to pull the skin off, and most times I use this chicken meat in casseroles. I’m thinking maybe there were no gnats in the bottom container because maybe the weight of the one on top, sealed the snap plastic tight enough not to get in. To eat or not to eat this chicken???
