Where Do Fruit Flies Come From, And Are You Eating Them? | The Curiosity Desk
Fruit flies don’t actually consume much fruit - they’re more interested in yeast and bacteria growing on rotten fruit, says entomologist Tanya Latty.
This week, Westborough resident Wayne Firstenberg asks a question that has long bugged him: “Where do fruit flies come from ? It's an annoying miracle to me that they just suddenly appear on my aging fruit.”
We discovered why your kitchen is a dream home for fruit flies. And, yes, that does mean that if a small colony takes flight when you pick up a ripe banana on, say, a Thursday, there’s a pretty good chance you might have gobbled up some of its siblings earlier in the week.
And, while this “annoying miracle” of an insect may be bothersome on your bananas, it’s also been a boon for biochemistry.

watching this because my Wife is going Crazy about the Fruit Flies in our Kitchen.
Okay so they come into the house and land on ripened bananas, I was hoping to get this question answered... they lay eggs on the skin of the banana, or do they borrow down to the actual fruit and lay eggs there?

The are also inside the banana as a larvae
Part of me regrets that I questioned where they came from in first place

I think the larve is in the Banana from the Grocery store because my Semi Truck is always locked with windows up but they suddenly appear when the Bananas get ripe.
These have outstanding production value and are densely packed with consumable science, love it! 👍
Great stuff, keep it up!

Heard about this on BRP- so psyched to see this and not just listen. Very cool.

Great video, so interesting... I'm going to say that you consumed 6 larva when you ate the banana at the end of the video, lol. Yummy. Thanks for a great video.
Wow! Very interesting.
Thank you for giving me the benifit of the doubt. I don't care about eating them, but I don't want them hanging out all day here. I already got my own bioself stuff walking around.
That was awesome, thank you for that information. - I wish I could erase that from my memory xDD

So technically we buy fruit with bugs in it.
Oh thank God, i thought they just came from fruits themselves
Nasty little flying buggers! i've become master exterminator of these and they still appear to come out of nowhere, though.
This is the food for swallow or swiftlet right?

Exactly!! And I wanted microscopic evidence how they lay n hatch their eggs!! I read somewhere that the fruit we buy is already carrying the egg… it’s part of life. Bugs n germs are everywhere and we’re part of that ecosystem!

They answer it, you haven't watched the video or paid attention, or just trolling. They come from outside and breed in your fruits if you leave them in an open space.

@@critikasalihmeylanido you ever see fruit flies outside? How do they get in?
Is that what the little black dots inside bananas are? Fruit fly eggs? Because aren't bannanas engineered to be seedless?

When they say " Seedless" the seeds are so under developed, they're small and soft. Seedless isn't quite Seedless.

So, the saying: You'll get more flies with Sugar than Vinegar is not correct if you're after the Fruit fly.🤔
I saw my boiled egg on the counter and then I see fruit flies caming out of the cracked hard boiled chicken egg, do fruit flies eat hard boiled egg or was the big female going to lay eggs from the few little males?

Wait till you see a video on what's in Meat and especially Fish, lots of parasites in fish. The more Organic and antibiotic free, the more pests in your food. Natural Yum🦟🐜🐛🐌 And you said no to eating bugs...😅
I bought two rotisserie chickens yesterday, pulled off a little meat from one breast to eat it then snapped it back in its container. The next time I went in there, there were, what looked like 5-6 gnats in there on the chicken breast. I didn’t puke but I didn’t debone the chicken like I wanted too. Should I throw away the chicken they were on? I don’t eat the skin so I’m not to worried about the meat where I’m going to pull the skin off, and most times I use this chicken meat in casseroles. I’m thinking maybe there were no gnats in the bottom container because maybe the weight of the one on top, sealed the snap plastic tight enough not to get in. To eat or not to eat this chicken???
free protein :)
