Where did the #human animal originate? What are we really? What are humans? Where did we evolve and how long did it take? In this episode I explore what we know of the ancient human family tree and how we got here in the first place.

⏰ SERIES DESCRIPTION
⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡⏡
As a crustacean poet once said, “The Human World, is a mess,” and boy was he correct. Our history is a patchwork of fossilized bones spread across the world. In the last 20 years, we’ve made huge leaps in our understanding of the human story, but we’re still trying to understand exactly *where* we came from and *why* we’re still here! This is especially confusing when you learn there were so many other ancient human-like creatures on this planet throughout our long history.
If you take one thing away from this series, I want you to know you're a combination of millions of ancient animals toiling, adapting, evolving and breeding. Just ponder that for a while.

This is a HUGE source for all things human origins.
humanorigins.si.edu/evidence/human-fossils/species/homo-sapiens
The species that you and all other living human beings on this planet belong to is Homo sapiens. During a time of dramatic climate change 300,000 years ago, Homo sapiens evolved in Africa. Like other early humans that were living at this time, they gathered and hunted food, and evolved behaviors that helped them respond to the challenges of survival in unstable environments.
Oldest Homo sapiens fossil claim rewrites our species' history
www.nature.com/news/oldest-homo-sapiens-fossil-claim-rewrites-our-species-history-1.22114
Researchers say that they have found the oldest Homo sapiens remains on record in an improbable place: Morocco.
300,000 year-old “early Homo sapiens” sparks debate over evolution
arstechnica.com/science/2017/06/300000-year-old-early-homo-sapiens-sparks-debate-over-evolution/
Until this week, the earliest known fossils of Homo sapiens were about 200,000 years old. But two recent papers in Nature have obliterated that date with a report of 300,000 year-old skull fragments from five individuals found in Morocco. The researchers who discovered the fossils call them "early Homo sapiens." But other scientists say this misrepresents the complex story of human #evolution and adaptation.

    I’ve been super busy so it took me a while to get through this one, but I’m looking forward to watching the rest of the series! Trace, I noticed that when you said something about the larynx not fossilizing well, your voice sounded just like Jack Nicholson’s... LOL Seriously, go back & listen! Also, I meant to say this a while back - I love the very 80s graphics you use, like the pink & yellow lines... brings me back to my childhood. 😄 I also noticed that you moved whatever thingy you have to press every so often from the spot off to your right, to more in front of you. Thank you, it’s less distracting that way. Anyway, about the actual subject matter - very interesting stuff, & as always, your enthusiasm makes it even better! Off to start video #2 now. Keep up the great work! 👍🏻

    I know it's arbitrary, but I'm not sure if any other species makes tools for entertainment. Other species use tools, and other species will play with things, but I don't know of any other species that spends time and resources to create tools specifically for play and no other purpose. We're also the only ones to have organized play with teams, and rules and agreements, but that also comes down to communication, and who knows if we got that from our ancient friends.

  • @TraceDominguez

    @TraceDominguez

    3 жыл бұрын

    Interesting idea! Tool use PURPOSE isn't something I'd considered. Chimps and other animals do have fun for the sake of fun, not just for learning -- but of course, all our games (and our rules and everything) were designed not just to fill the time, but to teach (ethics, physical prowess, and sportsmanship [which is really just community and social skills in disguise]). So maybe our play tools are not for "no other purpose" but rather "for a somewhat more abstract purpose" ? just a thought

  • @BlueSparrow23

    @BlueSparrow23

    @@TraceDominguez Very true. Enhancing Dexterity, Developing a deeper communal understanding and culture, Games and play are huge parts of our culture as humans, and I think figuring out the first games we played might help teach us a lot about the culture that those people grew up in. I have a feeling it probably started as races, tag, Hide&Seek, but I wonder what the first "Game Tool" was. I know we have ancient sheep kucklebones that were used as dice. And when I said no other purpose, I mostly meant the 4 F's. While they definitely can enhance our abilities or prospects in those areas, I think it's a level of forethought, organization, communication, and communal understanding that we don't see elsewhere. (That I know of so far... MRIN, As always) As far as I know animals will use tools to gather food, or build a shelter, or attract mates, but I think complex play requires a more advanced theory of mind.
